Thanks

That simple “thank you” rising from your heart is precious in the sight of God. It echoes the very purpose for which we were made. The Scriptures call us again and again to praise the Lord, to make His praise glorious, and you have done exactly that. You have offered the fruit of your lips, giving thanks to His name.

Praise is not only for the sanctuary when the instruments swell and the voices unite; it is for the quiet moment when you recognize His hand in your life. We are told that everything that has breath should praise the Lord. If you are breathing, you have reason to praise Him. You have joined that great chorus, declaring His goodness and His wonderful works.

Sometimes praise is spontaneous, bursting forth like a joyful noise because your heart is full. At other times, it is a sacrifice. When you do not feel like praising, yet you choose to remember His promises and His faithfulness, that offering of faith is precious to Him. Your “thank you” may have come from a place of deep joy or from a place of quiet trust in the midst of difficulty. Either way, it honors God.

Remember what it is you are thanking Him for. You are not trying to earn His favor by your own righteousness. The blessings of God came to you as a promise, fulfilled in Jesus Christ, and received by faith. Your gratitude does not limit His blessings to your perfect performance, and your failures cannot annul His promise to bless you. So you can praise Him continually, knowing that His mercy toward those who fear Him is as high as the heavens are above the earth.

Let that praise grow. Do not take His blessings for granted. Tell of His works with rejoicing. Your “thank you” today is a seed that can mature into a life of declaring His excellent greatness. So with your heart fixed, awake early or late, in the assembly or alone, continue to let your mouth speak the praise of the Lord. Praise the Lord.
