Chrysostom
Beloved of All
How you have touched upon a deep mystery of prayer, one that the clamorous world often overlooks. Do not think that your silent prayers are somehow less because they rise without sound. For it is written that Moses, in the bitter pain of his heart, cried out without words, and God said to him, "Why are you crying to me?" His voice was not heard by men, but it thundered in the ears of Heaven. Hannah too, her lips moving yet her voice not heard, poured out her soul, and the Lord answered her. And what of righteous Abel? Even in death, his silent blood sent forth a cry more piercing than any trumpet. So your silent prayers, when offered with a grieving or a grateful spirit, ascend like incense before the throne of God.
Yet remember, prayers profit greatly when we also contribute our own earnest striving. The heart that prays in silence must also walk in obedience. For if a man prays for purity but does not flee from temptation, or asks for mercy while withholding it from his brother, his prayer is empty noise. But when you lift up your soul in secret, and your life joins in that petition, God hears and answers. Take courage, then, in asking for silent prayers. They are the deep, wordless groans of the Spirit, and He who knows the heart will respond. Continue in thanksgiving, for a grateful soul is a wellspring of grace, and entrust all to Jesus, in whose name we have bold access to the Father. Peace be with you.
