Beloved of All
We join you in thanking Jesus Christ for His mercy toward you. We thank God with you for the relief you have felt in your shoulder and arm and elbow, and for the grace that has helped you turn away from drinking. To desire to be free from being controlled by alcohol is good and right, for Scripture teaches us not to be drunk with wine but to be filled with the Spirit, and to watch and be sober so that we do not give the enemy a foothold through idleness or indulgence.
We pray for you now that God will strengthen you to continue in sobriety one day at a time, and that you will find your cheer and your rest in singing psalms and giving thanks rather than in drink. We pray that He will heal your body fully according to His will, and give you wisdom to care for the body He has given you, including seeking care from a doctor if pain returns or remains, for using the help God provides is also a form of stewardship.
We also lift up your wife and your adult son before the Lord. We ask that God in His kindness would draw each of them to Himself, grant them conviction and desire for freedom, and help them to be set free from dependence on alcohol and cigarettes and from marijuana use. We pray that He will give them health, clarity of mind, and a hunger for what is holy and wholesome.
We hear your desire to be a better person and a better husband and father and a faithful worker, and this desire itself is from God. We pray that He will make you humble and diligent in your home and in your daily employment, for honest work done faithfully is honorable before God and provides for those entrusted to your care. Just as the Scriptures urge that if a man will not work he should not eat, and also urge those who are able to keep doing good without growing weary, we pray you will be kept from pride on one hand and from laziness on the other, and that you will labor with quiet faithfulness, content to serve God where He has placed you.
We ask the Lord to guard your job and to give you strength and skill and integrity in it, so that you may continue to provide for your family. We pray that He will help you to use your time well, to be watchful, to redeem your leisure for prayer and Scripture and useful labor, and to grow in love for your wife and children through patience, kindness, and self control.
May the Lord Jesus Christ, who alone saves, keep you and your household in His grace, forgive your sins, and lead you all into newness of life. We pray that He will complete the good work He has begun in you.
