“Gracious and Almighty Father, we come before You acknowledging how often we wander from Your path and follow our own desires. Thank You for stretching out Your hands to us in patience and mercy all day long. Forgive us when we are stubborn or rebellious. Teach us to turn away from our own crooked ways and align our hearts completely with Your perfect will. In Jesus' name, Amen.”

We join you in this humble and beautiful prayer of repentance and thanksgiving, and we agree with you before the Father with grateful hearts.

What a sobering and merciful truth is revealed in Isaiah 65:2, I have spread out my hands all day to a rebellious people, who walk in a way that is not good, after their own thoughts. How patient and long suffering our God is toward us, and how often we indeed walk after our own thoughts and imaginations instead of His perfect way. Yet His hands remain outstretched to us all day long, calling us back to Himself. We are reminded that Yahweh is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness in Psalm 103:8, and that it is because of Yahweh's loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn't fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness in Lamentations 3:22-23. His patience is not to be taken lightly, for the goodness of God leads us to repentance as we read in Romans 2:4.

We love your acknowledgment of Jesus as the Bread of Heaven and the Word of Life, for He is the living Word through whom we have access to the Father and forgiveness of sins. We cling to the promise that if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness in 1 John 1:9.

We pray together with you,

Gracious and Almighty Father, we come before You together acknowledging how often we wander from Your path and follow our own desires and imaginations. Thank You for stretching out Your hands to us in patience and mercy all day long, even when we are stubborn and rebellious. Forgive us for the times we have walked in ways that are not good and have pursued our own thoughts instead of Your will. Wash us clean through the blood of Jesus Your Son. Teach us to turn away from our crooked ways and to align our hearts completely with Your perfect will. Create in us clean hearts and renew steadfast spirits within us, that we may walk in obedience and bring glory to Your name. Help us to hear Your voice, to respond quickly to Your outstretched hands, and to live daily in the refreshing that comes from Your presence. In Jesus' name, Amen.

We encourage you to continue to walk in this posture of daily repentance, for we are told to repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, so that there may come times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord in Acts 3:19. May we all turn quickly when He calls and rest in the mercy that is new every morning.

We join you in blessing the Lord who all day long holds out His hands in patience and mercy, even to an obstinate people who are prone to walk in ways not good and to pursue our own imaginations. Your prayer rightly confesses what the prophet declares in Isaiah 65:2, and what our own hearts must confess, that we are stubborn and rebellious by nature and have need of forgiveness.

How great is the goodness of God which ought to lead us to repentance. That you are preserved and still hear His voice is a token that He says to death, spare him, for I intend to save him. His goodness is not to lull us to sleep in sin, but to draw us with cords of love to turn from our crooked ways. True repentance is not a few qualms of conscience in dread of judgment, but a hearty turning that looks out of self to Christ and to Christ only, trusting Him who was set forth to be a propitiation for sin.

There is forgiveness with Him, and that forgiveness is for His own sake, through the blood of Jesus Christ alone. It is no more possible for a pardoned man to be lost than for Christ to be lost, for He is the sinner's surety. Lay your soul and all its sins at His dear feet and trust in Him to save you, and He will do it. Through this Man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins, and He is exalted a Prince and a Saviour to give repentance and remission of sins.

The work of the Spirit, which is the effect of the will of God, is to change the human will and make men willing in the day of His power, working in them to will and to do of His good pleasure. When He so works, the great practical end of the gospel is fulfilled, to bring the heart into obedience to Christ and to make the stubborn will acknowledge allegiance to His sway. Then we learn to say not as those who say we will go and do as we please, but if the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that. The path of obedience is to turn not to the right hand or to the left, but to keep close to His Word, for His commandments are not grievous and obedience yields the peaceable fruits of righteousness.

So we pray with you, Gracious and Almighty Father, we thank You for stretching out Your hands to us all day long in longsuffering mercy. Forgive us for our stubbornness and rebellion, for the times we have followed our own desires instead of Your perfect will. For Your own name's sake, blot out our transgressions through the blood of Jesus Christ, Your Son. Grant us godly repentance that needs not to be repented of, and by Your Spirit make us willing to turn from every crooked way and to walk in humble obedience before You. Teach us to hear Your Word with attention and to resolve to obey it, that we may live to Your glory. In Jesus name, Amen.

Your prayer reflects a true understanding of what the prophet says. God holds out His hands all day long to His people, not for a moment but with continual patience and mercy, even when we are obstinate and turn to our own imaginations and crooked ways. That outstretched hand is His love calling us back, and your words rightly answer that love with thanksgiving and with a request for forgiveness.

This is where we must take care to understand what real repentance is. Tears alone or a moment of regret is not enough. Esau sought the blessing with tears yet found no place of repentance, because his sorrow was not a true turning, as was shown afterward when he still intended to kill his brother. In the same way, godly sorrow is different from worldly sorrow. Godly sorrow works repentance unto salvation that brings no regret, because it leads a person to condemn his sin, to mourn it, to turn away from it and to align his heart completely with God's will. It is not only feeling sorry but being changed.

Take courage from this, for repentance is not closed to us. There is no second baptism, but there is repentance and it has great power. It is able to set free from the burden of sins even one who has fallen into the depth of wickedness, if he is willing to lay hold on it. Christ can be formed in us again when we truly turn to Him. The Church is given to us as a spiritual bath which wipes away not the filth of the body but the stains of the soul, through many ways of repentance, through confession, prayer, humility and obedience.

So continue to pray as you have prayed, asking the Father to teach you to turn away from your own ways and to walk in His perfect will, trusting not in your own sorrow but in His mercy through Jesus Christ, by whom alone we are saved. May He who stretches out His hands to you also strengthen you to take His hand and to walk in obedience with fear and trembling and with joyful trust.
