The Parent’s and Pastor’s Joy
The greatest joy for parents and pastors is seeing their children live out God’s truth in daily life.
We have read your request and our hearts go out to you as you face this revision surgery. We understand how heavy this is, carrying the pain of a fractured bone and tumors, the disappointment of complications after your original amputation, and the deep longing to walk again without such suffering. We also hear how scared you are, especially about anesthesia awareness and pain, and how lonely it feels to face this without your mother by your side. Even though years have passed since you lost her, we know that grief and the wish for a parent's comfort can feel very present in moments like this, and we are bringing all of this before the Lord together with you.

We want to remind you that God sees you, He is near to you in this fear, and He has not left you alone. Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit Psalm 34:18. He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds Psalm 147:3. When you feel afraid, we cling to His promise, Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness Isaiah 41:10. And again, Haven't I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don't be afraid. Don't be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go Joshua 1:9. Even when a mother cannot be there, God promises, When my father and my mother forsake me, then Yahweh will take me up Psalm 27:10. He is a very present help in trouble Psalm 46:1.

We also want to gently share something important we noticed, that your request did not mention the name of Jesus. We want you to know how much we love you and why we pray in His name. It is only through Jesus that we have access to God, and there is no other name by which we can be saved. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. That if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved Romans 10:9. If you have not already, we encourage you to put your trust in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord, and to call upon His name, for He hears and He saves. It is in His name that we bring your needs to the Father with confidence.

We bring your specific fears to the Lord and we encourage you to share them openly with your surgical and anesthesia team as well, so they can explain their plan to keep you safe and comfortable and answer your questions about anesthesia awareness and pain control. If possible, ask a trusted friend, pastor, or advocate from a church family to be with you at the hospital, to pray with you and to speak for you when you cannot. God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control 2 Timothy 1:7, and His peace can guard your heart even in the operating room. In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7.

We pray together for you now. Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we lift up this dear one to You. You know the pain that has been endured, the fractured bone, the tumors, and the exhaustion of living with constant pain. You know the fear of this upcoming revision surgery and the fear of anesthesia awareness and of suffering. Lord, we ask You to be near and to let Your perfect love cast out fear. Grant Your peace that surpasses all understanding to guard heart and mind in Christ Jesus. We pray for the surgeons, the anesthesiologists, and every nurse and caregiver, grant them wisdom, skill, steady hands, and attentiveness, and let the anesthesia work exactly as it should with no awareness and with good pain control. We ask for a successful procedure, for healing of tissue and bone, for protection from infection and complications, and for the ability to walk again with less pain in the days ahead. Comfort the grief of missing a mother, remind this precious child of Yours that You are Father and ever present help, and surround them with caring people who will not leave them alone. Strengthen faith and draw them close to Jesus, that they may know they are held in Your righteous right hand no matter what happens. We ask all this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus, our way to the Father and our hope, amen.

We are continuing to pray for you as November approaches. We encourage you to bring your Bible, or verses written on a card, to read before surgery, to pray aloud in Jesus name, and to ask the Lord to let you feel His presence in the hospital room. He will never leave you nor forsake you. Please keep us updated so we can keep praying for your healing, your peace, and your steps toward walking again.

We hear how heavy this is as November gets closer. Living with that much pain from the fracture and tumors, and now facing another amputation so you might walk again, would leave anyone feeling scared. And missing your mom in this moment, wishing she could be the one beside you, makes it even lonelier. It makes sense that anesthesia awareness and pain are at the top of your fears.

You don't have to carry those questions alone into the operating room. Your anesthesia team expects these worries and wants to hear them. It can help to write down your two biggest fears exactly as you shared them here and bring that paper to your pre-op visit, so you can ask how they monitor you during surgery and what the plan is for pain control right after. If you can, bring a trusted friend, pastor, or family member with you to that appointment and on surgery day to listen with you and stay nearby before and after. If you don't have someone yet, ask the surgeon's office if there is a nurse navigator, social worker or hospital chaplain who can be with you.

We are holding you in prayer in these weeks of waiting and we will keep praying through the day of your procedure.

Jesus, we lift our friend to You right now. You see her pain, her fear, and her grief for her mother. Please give her Your nearness and peace, give wisdom and steady hands to her surgeons and anesthesiologists, and provide caring people around her so she is not alone. Comfort her and guide each step ahead. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Your request has been heard with much tenderness and has been carried before the Lord with prayer. To face another amputation, with a fractured bone and tumors and so much pain already endured, and to do so with the memory of a mother long gone and no parent at your side, is a heavy trial. That you should feel scared, and that your thoughts should turn to the fear of waking under anesthesia and to the dread of pain, is most natural to our frail humanity.

You are not alone in that loneliness. Our blessed Savior knew what it was to be left alone just when as Man He most needed human sympathy. He was forsaken by His friends in His hour of sorrow, yet His Father was with Him. Though you feel the absence of your mother's support, and though fear overcomes the heart as it overcame the disciples, the Lord Himself draws near to the lonely. When father and mother forsake us, then the Lord will take us up, and He has promised never to leave nor forsake His own.

Hear how plentifully the word of the Lord speaks to fearful hearts. Fear not, for I am with thee, be not dismayed for I am thy God. Fear not, thou worm Jacob, I will help thee, saith the Lord. It is not merely a preacher who says fear not, but Jesus Himself who whispers to His poor servant fallen as dead at His feet, Fear not. This command is absolute and unqualified, Fear not at all. Why should the child of God be afraid when the arm which piled the heavens and sustains the pillars of the earth is pledged to uphold him. Fear is weakening and it dishonors God when we doubt His power to keep us. Labor then to get rid of fear by trusting the promised strength, for He has said, I will help thee.

Your fear of pain and of anesthesia is understood. It is natural that man should fear suffering, for we were not created for such brokenness. Yet remember that pain afflicts the living, and the Lord who watches over you neither slumbers nor sleeps. When you are under anesthesia and cannot watch over yourself, He watches over you. Not a moment will you be out of His sight, not a breath outside His care. The pain you have borne has been seen by Him, and the pain that is to come is known to Him who Himself suffered for us. Look unto Jesus, for in proportion as faith grows strong, fear vanishes. Perfect love casts out fear, because it has torment, and His love for you is perfect.

We will pray for you by name before the throne of grace. We will ask the Lord to guide the hands of the surgeons and those who administer the anesthesia, to grant you safety through the procedure in November, to keep you from awareness and to have mercy in the matter of pain. We will pray that He will give you His peace which passes understanding in the days before, and that He will bring you through to healing and to walk again according to His good will. We will ask Him to be your comfort as a mother comforts, and your strength as a Father upholds.

Take your fear as Jacob did and turn it into prayer. Tell the Lord all, as you have told us. He hears the cry of the worm Jacob and He helps. May you be enabled to flee into your Savior's breast and find there that mercy is all that is written. The Lord be with you in the operating room and in the recovery, and may His presence be more real to you than any fear.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
