Surgery.

We lift up your friend before the throne of grace, asking the Great Physician to guide every hand, every decision, and every moment of this doctor’s appointment. Father, we know that You are the One who heals, whether through medicine, through the skill of surgeons, or through Your miraculous touch. We ask that You grant wisdom to the doctors, clarity in their assessments, and compassion in their care. If surgery is needed, prepare the way for it to be successful, with no complications and a swift recovery. May Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, guard your friend’s heart and mind in Christ Jesus.

Lord, we also pray for faith to rise in this situation. Help your friend to trust in You completely, knowing that You hold their life in Your hands. Remind them that even in uncertainty, You are working all things together for good for those who love You and are called according to Your purpose (Romans 8:28). Strengthen their spirit, calm their fears, and fill them with hope as they wait on You.

We rebuke any spirit of fear or anxiety that may be trying to take hold, for You have not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). We declare that Your healing power is at work, and we stand on Your promises, believing that by Your stripes, we are healed (Isaiah 53:5).

In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.

We’re joining you in asking the Lord to guide your friend’s appointment and, if it’s truly needed and safe, to open the door for surgery. Waiting on test results and approvals can stir up a lot of anxious thoughts, for both of you, but God is no stranger to hospital hallways.

We remember a pastor who once stopped by to see his church organist the day before a serious heart operation. He tried every gentle way to get the man to admit he was scared, but the organist kept calmly saying things like “I’m in God’s hands” and “God is good.” It wasn’t denial; it was a seasoned, quiet confidence that the Lord would be with him no matter the outcome. That same steady presence is yours and your friend’s right now. The God who watches over us in the middle of the night is just as attentive in a doctor’s office.

One of the best things you can do is simply be a calm, prayerful companion. Offer to sit with your friend in the waiting room, or ask if you can pray together before they go in. Your presence speaks volumes, it reminds them they’re not facing this alone.

Lord, we lift up this friend to You. Give the doctors clear insight and wisdom. Guide the appointment, and if surgery is the right path, make the way plain and grant peace that passes understanding. Surround our friend and this dear prayer partner with Your steady care. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

It is God that writes intercession upon men's hearts, and your prayer for your friend is proof of His gracious work within you. There is no power like that of intercession, the secret springs that move the puppets of earth are the prayers of God’s believing people. You have seized the advantage, pleading in Jesus’ name for healing, and this is well.

Consider those healing leaves from the tree of life, the least thing about Christ is healing. The Sun of Righteousness has risen with healing in His wings, and even now His power touches the bodies and souls of men. Your friend’s appointment and surgery lie under His sovereign care, for pardon and healing are placed in happy conjunction through our Lord. Welcome, then, to healing for your friend through Jesus Christ.

But you ask also for the surgeon’s skill and a good outcome. Know this, your own Friend, and your father’s Friend, forsakes not. That Friend is Jesus, the Friend of sinners, who is present in every hospital ward and operating room. He is a Friend who loves at all times, and His healing beams can dart into the most anxious heart. There is an abundance of healing power in Him; not only His fruit is sweet, but the very leaves of His presence bring health.

Persevere, then, in your intercession. God forbid that you should sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray for your friend. Pursue them with persistent prayer, even as they go into the unseen of anaesthesia and recovery. The Holy Spirit makes intercession for the saints and helps your prayers to be offered in a proper manner when you know not what to ask. Healing and forgiveness are both bestowed on the Lord’s people; trust your friend into that same hand which was pierced for transgressors.

That friend of yours has a Friend who sticks closer than a brother, Jesus Christ, who gave His heart’s blood and can never forsake them. He will go with them down the corridors of the hospital and land with them safely on the other side of the procedure. May the Great Physician guide the human physicians, and may your prayers be answered with a swift restoration, to the glory of His name.
