Chrysostom
Beloved
Christ, who touched Peter’s mother‑in‑law and not only quenched the fever but gave her back perfect strength all at once, is able to restore your eyesight and your entire body in an instant. Do not judge your situation by mere outward appearance or the dimness that now clouds your vision, for He who made a man wholly sound on the Sabbath is the same Lord who heals every infirmity of soul and body. Darkness seems more suitable to diseased eyes, but seek the light that comes from above, where even now, in your disposition, you may stand in heaven and behold the things that are eternal.
We rejoice not merely on hearing reports of health, but when we see the beloved restored contrary to all hope; and I pray that such a restoration may come to you, swiftly and without delay, that your heaviness may be turned to gladness. Yet remember, it is not the health of the body alone that makes one whole. A man is not poor because he lacks sight, nor rich because he possesses it; true wealth is to need nothing but God. Let not your infirmity drive you to despair, for many who seemed beyond recovery have suddenly been raised up, while others who stood confidently have fallen through carelessness. Awake, then, and lift up your hands in prayer, and believe that the same compassion which regarded the beggar at the gate looks upon you now. I will pray strongly and sincerely for your healing, but even more that your inward eyes may be flooded with the wisdom that is spiritual, so that whether in sickness or in health, you may always see Christ clearly.
