🙌 Standard & Personal Lord's Prayer: Seek 1st The Father, His Honor Kingdom Will; Then Our Needs, Forgiveness for Us, Others, Kept from Sin & Evil...

Your thoughtful reflection on the prayer Jesus taught shows a sincere desire to pray in a way that honors God, and that desire itself is precious to Him.

What you have described is exactly how that prayer was intended to be used, not as words to be repeated without thought, but as a pattern to guide us. The prayers recorded in Scripture are brief, which reminds us that it is not length or amount of time that makes prayer effective. Repeating the same phrases from memory without engaging the heart has little value, but taking each phrase slowly, thinking through its meaning and praying it with understanding, can be deeply fruitful. James speaks of the fervent, heartfelt prayer of a righteous person as having great power, and that fervency comes from meaning what we say.

That model begins with relationship. To say Our Father in heaven assumes we have been brought into the family of God through faith in Jesus Christ. John tells us that those who receive Him and believe in His name are given the right to become children of God, and Paul writes that we have received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry, Abba, Father. Without that relationship through Christ, prayer has no foundation, but with it we can come with the confidence of a child to a father.

Notice the order Jesus gave. The first petitions are not about us at all, but about God: hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. In prayer our primary concern should be for His honor, His reign, and His purposes to be accomplished. To hallow His name is to ask that His character and all that He has revealed about Himself would be reverenced in our own lives and in the world, and that our conduct would not cause His name to be dishonored. To pray for His kingdom to come is to ask for His rule of righteousness, peace and joy to be evident in us and through us, and ultimately for Christ to establish His kingdom fully. Scripture contrasts the kingdom of light and life under God with the kingdom of darkness in rebellion against Him, and when we pray this we are asking the stronger One to overcome that rebellion and to bring His will to pass here as it is perfectly done in heaven. This is why Jesus also said to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, trusting that other things will be cared for in their proper place.

Only after that does the prayer turn to our own needs. Give us this day our daily bread covers every kind of need, spiritual, physical, emotional and daily provision. We live not by bread alone but by every word that comes from God, and we can ask Him to supply what we need to love Him fully and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors reminds us that our request for forgiveness is linked to our willingness to forgive others. We confess our own sin before God and receive His forgiveness, and we also release those who have sinned against us, entrusting them to the One who alone judges and saves. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil is a plea for protection from the enticements that would draw us into living according to the flesh rather than the Spirit. Temptation itself is common to all and is not sin, Jesus Himself was tempted, but sin comes when we yield to that desire. So we ask for strength to choose the way of the Spirit, for deliverance from deception and from the evil one, and for the watchful care God promises to His children.

Then the prayer returns to where it began, with worship: for Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Prayer in this way moves in a circle. It starts with God, brings our needs before Him, and ends with God again in praise. In that sense prayer takes different forms, it is worship as we acknowledge His greatness, it is petition as we bring our needs, and it is intercession as we bring the needs of others before Him.

The purpose of prayer is not to get our own will done on earth, but to see His will done. When He places His desires on our hearts and we pray them back to Him, He accomplishes His purposes through us. That is a far greater thing than simply trying to use prayer to accomplish our own plans.

Continue to use this pattern as you have been, pausing over each phrase, turning it into your own honest words before the Father, asking first for His name to be honored and His will to be done, then bringing your daily needs, your need for forgiveness and for strength against temptation, and closing with worship for His everlasting kingdom, power and glory. Praying in that way, with understanding and sincerity in Jesus name, is the kind of prayer God delights to hear and answer.

We thank you for giving us the privilege to pray on your behalf and for sharing that beautiful and thorough pattern from the Lord's Prayer in Matt 6:9-13. We are glad that you asked us to stand in agreement with you in prayer as you seek first the Father and His honor and His Kingdom and His will according to Matt 6:33, and then bring before Him our daily provision and forgiveness and deliverance from temptation and evil.

We have continued to pray with you that our Father in heaven would be hallowed in our lives, that His Kingdom would come and His will be done on earth as it is in heaven, that He would give us each day our daily bread and meet our spiritual and physical needs, that we would know His forgiveness as we forgive others, and that He would lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for His is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory forever. We have also prayed with you that we would not merely repeat words but would sincerely consider and ardently pray this pattern with understanding as taught in James 5:16.

If your request was answered and you have seen the Lord honor His name and answer these petitions in your life, please post a praise report and let us all know so we may rejoice with you. If your request does not seem to have been answered yet, please post it again as a new request and allow us to continue with you in prayer. We are honored to keep standing with you.

May God bless you as you continue to seek Him through His Son, Jesus Christ. We pray that you will continue to abide in Christ and bear much fruit to the glory of the Father, and we ask all these things in Jesus Name, Amen.
