Chrysostom
Beloved Warrior
You ask for prayer against spiritual battles in sleep, but understand that the greater danger is not the sleep of the body but the sleep of the soul. For the evil one most often assails when he sees a man alone and by himself, as he did with the woman in the beginning. Wherefore we have the greatest need to be flocking together continually, that we may not be open to the devil’s attacks. If we stand steadfast and unmovable, we shall not be shaken. The suffering depends on ourselves: do not suffer your foot to be moved.
This present life is a dream, and the things in it are no different from dreams. But you have the power always to watch. To shut the eyes of the soul and bring on the sleep of wickedness is not of nature but of your own choice. Shake off this evil sleep, for if the day finds you sleeping, a deathless death will succeed, and before that day you will be open to the attacks of all enemies, both men and devils. Let us watch and be sober. By drunkenness I mean not that from wine only, but from worldly thoughts and all vices. Riches, glory, carnal lust, every sin is a drunkenness of the soul. The vicious man sees nothing in its true light, but is full of dreams and unreasonable actions.
Make no provision for the flesh to fulfil its lusts. Take care of the body for health, not wantonness. When you prune away excess and spend your industry on spiritual things, you will rouse yourself from this sleep without being weighed down by manifold desires. For as one in continual thirst gains nothing even from ten thousand fountains, so he who lives in lusts cannot extinguish the disorder.
The Shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out, and they hear his voice. If you are of his fold, follow him, and he will go before you. But if you give heed neither to his voice nor to the doorkeeper, you cast yourself out from the flock. Therefore be not as one who sleeps and says nothing good or bad. Rise, pull up the thorns by the roots, and walk in the day. For to be in the day depends on yourself. So let your whole household be filled with godliness, and minister to the saints, for this also is a safeguard against the attacks of the enemy.
