Spiritual battle

You ask for prayer against spiritual battles in sleep, but understand that the greater danger is not the sleep of the body but the sleep of the soul. For the evil one most often assails when he sees a man alone and by himself, as he did with the woman in the beginning. Wherefore we have the greatest need to be flocking together continually, that we may not be open to the devil’s attacks. If we stand steadfast and unmovable, we shall not be shaken. The suffering depends on ourselves: do not suffer your foot to be moved.

This present life is a dream, and the things in it are no different from dreams. But you have the power always to watch. To shut the eyes of the soul and bring on the sleep of wickedness is not of nature but of your own choice. Shake off this evil sleep, for if the day finds you sleeping, a deathless death will succeed, and before that day you will be open to the attacks of all enemies, both men and devils. Let us watch and be sober. By drunkenness I mean not that from wine only, but from worldly thoughts and all vices. Riches, glory, carnal lust, every sin is a drunkenness of the soul. The vicious man sees nothing in its true light, but is full of dreams and unreasonable actions.

Make no provision for the flesh to fulfil its lusts. Take care of the body for health, not wantonness. When you prune away excess and spend your industry on spiritual things, you will rouse yourself from this sleep without being weighed down by manifold desires. For as one in continual thirst gains nothing even from ten thousand fountains, so he who lives in lusts cannot extinguish the disorder.

The Shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out, and they hear his voice. If you are of his fold, follow him, and he will go before you. But if you give heed neither to his voice nor to the doorkeeper, you cast yourself out from the flock. Therefore be not as one who sleeps and says nothing good or bad. Rise, pull up the thorns by the roots, and walk in the day. For to be in the day depends on yourself. So let your whole household be filled with godliness, and minister to the saints, for this also is a safeguard against the attacks of the enemy.

Your request touches on something many believers face: the sense that when you try to rest, a spiritual battle intensifies. It is no small thing, and I want to offer you the encouragement Scripture gives, because God has provided real rest for His people.

That rest is not simply the absence of trouble or the silencing of every dark thought. It is the rest of faith. We enter God's rest by believing that Jesus has already accomplished everything needed for our peace. If you wait until you can see exactly what God is doing, or until you feel completely safe, you will never truly rest. The only lasting rest comes when you stop trusting in your own ability to guard your mind and instead trust fully in His finished work. That is the rest into which every believer is invited, and it remains open to you right now, even in the middle of the night.

At the same time, do not underestimate how seriously God calls you to hate evil. The fear of the Lord is a hatred of evil, and that includes not giving it a foothold in your imagination or your sleeping hours. You are not called to negotiate with it or to develop a tolerance for it. You are called to turn away from it, to avoid its path entirely. That might mean refusing to dwell on frightening thoughts as you lie down, or it might mean filling your mind with truth before you sleep. Evil cannot thrive where God’s truth is actively trusted.

When you rest, remember what kind of protection you have. The one who dwells in the secret place of the Most High abides under the shadow of the Almighty. He covers you with His feathers, and under His wings you find refuge. His truth is your shield, no matter how dark the night feels. That truth stands guard while you sleep. No enemy can reach you without crossing the One who watches over you. Time passes differently when you sleep in His care; what felt like a long battle can vanish when morning comes, and you wake to find He preserved you.

Commit your sleeping hours to the Lord and then rest in that commitment. Fretting over what evil might come only stirs up inner turmoil. Instead, wait patiently for Him. Pray before you close your eyes: confess your trust in Him, renounce any fear, and ask His Spirit to rest upon you. Spiritual attacks are real, but the weapons God has given you, especially prayer and simple faith, are mightier. Jesus Himself is your Sabbath rest. You have entered into Him, and in Him your soul can lie down in peace, knowing that He has already overcome whatever would trouble you.

We want to thank you for trusting us with the privilege of standing alongside you in this spiritual battle, especially during those vulnerable moments of rest. It has been on our hearts to lift you up before the Lord, asking Him to surround you with His heavenly host, to rebuke any darkness that seeks to disturb your peace, and to fill your mind and spirit with His perfect protection. We prayed that the blood of Jesus would be a shield over you, that His angels would encamp around you, and that His peace would guard your heart and mind as you sleep.

If the Lord has answered this prayer in a way you’ve seen or felt, we would be so encouraged to hear your praise report—let us rejoice together in His faithfulness! If, however, the battle still feels present or the struggle continues, please don’t hesitate to post this request again. We are here to stand with you in persistent prayer, believing that God hears and will move on your behalf. May He strengthen you, renew your spirit, and draw you ever closer to Him as you trust in His power and love.

We continue to pray in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
