Son won't go to sleep/keeping me up every night

Beloved of All
Jesus please let this stop. I pray about this all the time with no change. He will not go to sleep and he keeps me up late every night. I cannot take this anymore, it is wrecking my health (and his) and he doesn't even care. Please let this stop. I cannot sleep if he is still up. Please let him realize how disrespectful and obnoxious he is being and stop this. I cannot get anything done the next day because I am exhausted. Please let him realize he is wrong and change. Thank you Jesus, Amen.

We hear your exhaustion and frustration, dear sister or brother in Christ, and we lift this burden before the Lord with you. Parenting is a sacred calling, yet it can also be one of the most challenging roles we face, especially when sleep deprivation clouds our patience, health, and ability to function. The Bible reminds us in Psalm 127:2, "It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his beloved." Yet here you are, denied that gift of rest, and we grieve with you in this struggle.

First, we must address the heart of the matter, not just the behavior, but the disrespect and lack of consideration your son is displaying. Scripture is clear that children are to honor their parents (Exodus 20:12), and this includes respecting boundaries, especially those that affect the well-being of the household. His actions are not merely inconvenient; they reveal a deeper issue of selfishness and disregard for authority. We rebuke this spirit of rebellion in Jesus’ name and command it to loose its grip on your son. Proverbs 29:15 warns, "The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself causes shame to his mother." While discipline is not always easy, it is necessary, and love sometimes requires firm correction.

We also recognize the toll this is taking on you. Your health is suffering, your work is hindered, and your spirit is weary. Jesus Himself invites us in Matthew 11:28, "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest." You have been carrying this alone for too long, and we declare that the Lord sees your faithful prayers and will answer them. But we must also ask: Have you sought wisdom in how to address this practically? The book of James tells us, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him" (James 1:5). Have you set clear, enforceable consequences for his disobedience? Have you prayed with him about this, asking the Holy Spirit to convict his heart? Sometimes, our prayers must be paired with godly action.

Let us pray together now:

"Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, lifting up this precious parent and child. Lord, You see the exhaustion, the frustration, and the broken patterns in this home. We ask You to intervene in power. Soften this young heart, Father, let him see the error of his ways and repent of his disrespect. Break any spirit of rebellion or defiance, and replace it with a spirit of obedience and honor. Give this parent wisdom, strength, and creativity to address this issue with love and firmness. Provide rest, Lord, both physically and spiritually. Heal their bodies from the toll of sleepless nights, and restore their energy and joy.

We declare that this cycle will break, in Jesus’ name. We speak peace over this home, discipline over this child, and renewal over this parent. May Your Word take root in both their hearts, and may Your presence fill every moment of their days and nights. We trust You to move, Father, for Your Word says in Philippians 4:19 that You will supply every need according to Your riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Thank You for hearing us. Thank You for answering. In the precious name of Jesus, we pray. Amen."

Now, dear one, we encourage you to take these steps:
1. Set clear boundaries, Decide on a reasonable bedtime and enforce it consistently. If he refuses, there must be consequences (e.g., loss of privileges, earlier bedtime the next night).
2. Pray with him, Sit down together and pray aloud, asking the Lord to help him honor you and value rest. This plants seeds of conviction.
3. Examine the root, Is there anxiety, rebellion, or something else driving his behavior? Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal it.
4. Seek support, If this persists, consider speaking with a pastor, counselor, or trusted fellow believer for additional wisdom.

You are not alone in this. The Lord is your strength, and He will sustain you. Keep pressing into Him, your breakthrough is coming.

We hear how worn out and frustrated you are, night after night of no sleep, and feeling like your ### doesn’t even care, is truly exhausting. It makes complete sense that you’re at the end of your rope.

While you keep praying for your ###’s heart to change, we want to gently encourage you to take one step right now for your own health: set a boundary around your sleep that doesn’t depend on his cooperation. That might mean deciding on a firm lights‑out time for yourself, using earplugs or a white‑noise machine, and reminding yourself that you are not responsible for his choice to stay awake, your body needs rest, and it’s not unloving to protect that. Even small, consistent changes can start to restore your strength for the next day.

You also mentioned that this is wrecking both your health and his. If you haven’t already, it could be wise to schedule a check‑up for each of you. A doctor can rule out anything physical contributing to his wakefulness and help you address the toll the sleep loss is taking on you, not as a replacement for prayer, but alongside it.

We are praying with you now: Jesus, You see this weary mom and how deeply she needs rest. Give her the courage to make choices that guard her own health, and work in her ###’s heart to stir tenderness and consideration. Sustain her while she waits, and bring a peaceful rhythm to their nights. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
