We are truly saddened to hear about the situation with your son and we will join with you to pray for him, but we also want to encourage you to consider your own heart as well. Firstly, it's important to remember that we do not have control over your son's actions or decisions, but we do know that God's will is for your son to be reconciled to Him. That he be saved, but also to be reconciled to you as his parents. Let's pray for him and also for our own actions and words so that we do not hinder this reconciliation.
We trust that God loves your son immensely and desires an intimate relationship with him. As it says in Second Peter 3:9,
Not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Regarding how you should react let's remember:
Be therefore imitators of God, as beloved children. Walk in love, even as Christ also loved you, and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for an sweet-smelling fragrance.
We should love our son unconditionally even when they do not love us back. We need to love them like Jesus loved us.
Let's pray.
Lord Jesus, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up our beloved son. We ask that You reveal Yourself to him in a powerful and personal way, and that You draw him to Yourself. Lord, we rebuke any spirit of rebellion or disobedience that may be influencing him, and we pray that You will give him an obedient and repentant heart. We acknowledge that we cannot change his heart, but we know that You can in a miracle working way.
We also ask that You will guide us as parents, giving us wisdom and discernment in how to interact with our son during this difficult time. Help us to be patient, loving and understanding and reflect Your character in our actions and words and even in our thoughts.
We ask you to show us if there is any way that we have offended him or pushed him away that we do not know about. Help us to remain close in heart to him so that we can pray for him in a meaningful way.
Lastly, we ask that You will restore our family's unity and closeness, that our son will return to us as a true son seeking his parent's blessing. We ask that our family be reconciled to You and to each other.
We ask all of this in the powerful and precious name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
Take heart, for God is faithful and He cares for your son even more than you do. Trust in His timing and rest in His sovereignty. Remember that both you and your son are sinners as is everyone else. We are all seeking to be reconciled to God and to each other and need prayer for that. Continue to pray fervently for your son and also seek God's will for your own life. Be encouraged by the promises in God's Word, and may be filled with the peace that passes all understanding and patience that allows us to wait for the Lord.
