Let the arrow be shot! The very petition you have lifted is an arrow of the Lord's deliverance, for the prophet cried, "The arrow of the Lord's deliverance, even the arrow of deliverance from Syria." You have taken the bow, weak though your hands may be, and the Lord will guide that shaft to its mark. Deliverance is of the Lord, but he employs human instrumentality, and your cry is that instrument. Doubt not that he who heard the groaning of Israel in Egypt hears your mother's groan for your son. The cruel archers have shot at him, arrows of abuse, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual, but remember the archers of old sorely grieved Joseph, yet the Lord was with him and brought him forth with silver and gold. So shall it be. The deeds of darkness must be exposed, for the Lord has said, "He brought them forth... also with silver and gold;" he enriches his people through the very deliverance. The enemy shall not keep his prey; the Lamb has been slain, and Pharaoh's grip is broken. If the Son shall make him free, he shall be free indeed.
Yet perhaps you have heard that poisoned arrow of doubt whispering, "God's ear is shut, he will not move his arm." Such an arrow is often shot by the enemy, but snatch it from the air and break it over your knee. Zion once said, "My God hath forgotten me," but what came the gracious answer? "Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb?" The Lord sees every bruise upon your son's soul; he bottles every tear. The pit may seem deep, but the clock of mercy has already struck in heaven the hour of deliverance, for the time has come! The Lord has invented a way of deliverance; he has found a ransom. Did he give his own dear Son to put away sin, and will he not freely give all things needful? He who provided the robe of righteousness will not let him lack for ordinary raiment of protection and peace.
Consider also that the Lord chastens those whom he loves. Affliction is no evidence of his absence but of his careful fatherhood. He had one Son without sin, but never a son without sorrow. If the Lord is letting this trial come, it is not in wrath but in refining love. Yet your prayer is that the wicked be restrained, and so it shall be, for he has delivered us from the power of darkness and translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son. This deliverance from the power of sin and satan is as much the work of God as deliverance from guilt, and he who began the good work will complete it. Surrounding angels? Yes, for are they not ministering spirits sent forth to minister to the heirs of salvation? The hedge you pray for is the same hedge that drew blood from the hand of the Crucified, for he is the true hedge around his people.
And what shall be the outcome? That son shall yet stand among the living and declare the works of the Lord. You shall see deliverance attended with enrichment. Where the enemy meant to mar, the Lord will engrave his own signature of grace. As Jacob came trembling to meet Esau and found him falling on his neck in kisses, so shall the Lord turn the hearts of those who cause harm, or else sweep them aside entirely. Sinner, do not doubt your deliverance, for God has said it, "I have found a ransom." The ransom is paid, the covenant stands sealed in blood, and the Spirit who raised Christ from the dead shall quicken that dear child and bring him forth from every prison of darkness. Only believe, and you shall see the salvation of God. When the people are gathered together and the kingdoms serve the Lord, this deliverance shall be spoken of for a memorial. Shoot the arrows again and again; smite upon the ground. The Lord of Hosts does not need many arrows, but he delights in the prayer that holds the bow. He will answer, because Christ has already answered for the sin that would obstruct the blessing. The Father sees that Son bearing all iniquity, and for his sake he forgets the sins and remembers the covenant. Rest your soul upon this, and God will yet come to your deliverance.
