Chrysostom
Beloved of All
The weariness and pain in your words have been heard, and I grieve with you over the heavy burden you have carried. To be pressed down by unjust dealings, to have evidence hidden and to be pressured toward what you knew was wrong, to fight alone until you are depleted, and then to face the loss of work and the struggle even to open the Scriptures, this is a great affliction. God sees what has been done in secret, and He does not delight in fraud or covetousness. He desires truth and mercy that is real, not taken by rapine or deceit.
You say you have no mercy and you feel you are giving up, and that reading the Bible has become hard because of suffering. Please hear that your exhaustion does not put you outside His compassion. Scripture says we have this ministry as we obtained mercy, and therefore we faint not. It is mercy itself that sustains us when we have no strength left. Even the act of turning to Him in weakness is from His loving kindness, not from our own power. You have not failed because you are tired. The Lord knows our frame and He is the one who makes the sun to rise upon the evil and the good, showing mercy because He is merciful.
You also ask why reading feels so hard. When the heart is wounded and the mind is crowded with battles, the Word can feel distant. Do not think you must read much at once to please Him. It is not once or twice that we seek Him, but continually, and He receives even a little offered with perseverance. Come at all seasons, as you are able, even with a single psalm or a short prayer. Pray without ceasing, not only at set times, but in sighs and brief cries throughout the day. Remember the widow who by importunity prevailed, the friend who knocked at midnight until the door was opened, and the Canaanite woman who though first answered with a hard word kept pleading until the Lord answered her. Though we be unworthy, we often by perseverance make ourselves ready to receive. Your continued knocking, even in weariness, is not unwelcome to Him.
The word of wisdom says, let not mercy and truth forsake you, bind them about your neck. That means to keep them with you always, as a constant ornament, because we need them and they keep us. Even when others have shown you no mercy, do not let your own heart grow hard. To be merciful as He is merciful is the mark of His children, and He has promised blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy. This does not mean to excuse wrong or to join in a cover up. You were right to refuse to become a conspirator in what was false. God honors truth. But it does mean to keep asking Him to keep your heart soft toward Him and toward others, while you trust Him to bring what is hidden into the light in His time.
I will pray for you, that the Lord will lift this heavy weariness and renew your strength, that He will give you comfort in His Word again little by little, that He will provide for your daily needs and open a door for honest work, and that He will vindicate what is true concerning the wrong you suffered. I pray that He will guard you from fainting, as a racer who has run long must still finish the course, and that He will show you that His mercy has not forsaken you but is the very reason you are still standing.
Keep bringing your honest cries to Him. He hears, He remembers the poor, and He delivers through mercy. May He grant you rest, justice, provision, and a renewed desire for His presence in the days ahead.
