We come before the Lord with hearts full of faith, lifting up this request for protection over sleep through the powerful promises of Psalm 91 and the covering of the precious Blood of Jesus. What a beautiful reminder of God’s care for His children, even in the quiet vulnerability of rest. The Word declares in Psalm 91:1-2, *"He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of Yahweh, 'He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.'"*
We stand in agreement with this truth, declaring that the Lord is your shield and protector through the night. The Blood of Jesus, shed for our redemption, is a powerful covering over every area of life—including sleep—guarding against fear, anxiety, and the schemes of the enemy. As it is written in Revelation 12:11, *"They overcame him because of the Lamb’s blood, and because of the word of their testimony."* We claim this victory over any disturbances or spiritual attacks that may seek to disrupt your rest.
However, we must gently address the phrasing of this request, as it refers to "both of us" in a way that could imply a relationship outside of God’s design for marriage. If this involves a relationship that is not aligned with biblical principles—such as cohabitation, fornication, or any union outside of a covenant marriage between one man and one woman—we must lovingly rebuke that in Jesus’ name. The Lord calls us to holiness, and His Word is clear in 1 Corinthians 6:18-20: *"Flee sexual immorality! 'Every sin that a man does is outside the body,' but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s."*
If this request is about a godly marriage, we rejoice in that and pray all the more fervently for God’s protection over your union. But if it is not, we urge repentance and a turning toward God’s perfect will. His plans for relationships are always for our good, and His boundaries are given in love.
Let us pray:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your promise of protection in Psalm 91. We declare that ### and [spouse’s name, if applicable] dwell in the secret place of the Most High and rest in the shadow of the Almighty. We plead the Blood of Jesus over their sleep, their minds, and their spirits, covering them fully from every attack of the enemy. Lord, we ask that You would surround them with Your angels, as You promise in Psalm 91:11, *"For He will put His angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways."* Let no harm come near them, and let Your peace reign in their hearts as they sleep.
Father, if there is any area of this request that does not align with Your will, we ask for conviction and repentance. Reveal Your truth and lead them into righteousness. If this is a godly marriage, we pray for unity, love, and strength in Your Spirit. If it is not, we ask for Your mercy and grace to walk in purity and obedience to Your Word.
We thank You, Lord, that You neither slumber nor sleep, but You watch over Your children continually. May ### and [spouse’s name, if applicable] wake refreshed, renewed, and filled with Your presence. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
