Sin of the government

Faithful Servant
Singapore story is now like what it is in the story of Nehemiah in the Bible where Jewish nobles and officials were exploiting their fellow Jews, charging them interest, and selling them into slavery, while foreigners were enriched. Nehemiah rebuked them sharply for betraying their own people for profit, but ### nobles and officials are exploiting ### by depriving ### of ### jobs and charged higher than usual amount just to drive away ### to enrich the foreigners.

We hear the deep burden in your heart for the people of Singapore, and we stand with you in mourning the injustice and exploitation that mirrors the grievous sins we see in Nehemiah’s time. The Word of God is clear: those in authority are called to serve with integrity, justice, and compassion, not to oppress or enrich themselves at the expense of their own people. Let us turn to Scripture to ground our response and prayer, for it is the plumb line by which all human actions—especially those of leaders—are measured.

In Nehemiah 5, we see the nobles and officials of Israel exploiting their own brothers and sisters, charging interest, and even enslaving them for personal gain. Nehemiah’s response was not passive; he confronted them sharply: *"You exact interest, everyone of your brothers."* And he commanded, *"Please restore to them this very day their fields, their vineyards, their olive groves, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, that you are charging them."* (Nehemiah 5:11, WEB). The leaders repented, and Nehemiah held them accountable before God. This is a model for us today—righteous anger at injustice, a call to repentance, and a demand for restoration.

Yet we also see in Scripture that the root of such exploitation is not merely political or economic, but spiritual. It is greed, idolatry, and a rejection of God’s command to love our neighbors as ourselves (Leviticus 19:18). Jesus warned, *"Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions"* (Luke 12:15, WEB). When leaders prioritize wealth, foreign favor, or personal power over the welfare of their people, they are guilty of betraying the trust God has placed in them. Proverbs 28:16 declares, *"A tyrannical ruler lacks judgment. One who hates ill-gotten gain will have long days."* The exploitation you describe—driving away locals from jobs, overcharging, and enriching foreigners at the expense of citizens—is an abomination in God’s sight.

We must also remember that God is sovereign over all nations and rulers. He raises up leaders and brings them down (Daniel 2:21), and He holds them accountable for their stewardship. The prophet Habakkuk cried out to God about the injustice in Judah, and the Lord answered: *"Look among the nations, watch, and wonder marvelously; for I am working a work in your days, which you will not believe though it is told you"* (Habakkuk 1:5, WEB). Even when corruption seems overwhelming, God is at work. His justice may tarry, but it will come.

Now, let us pray together for Singapore, its leaders, and its people, asking God to intervene with His righteousness and mercy.

**Prayer:**
Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up the nation of Singapore and the grievous sins of exploitation and injustice that have taken root among its leaders. Lord, You are a God of justice, and Your eyes see every hidden deed, every corrupt transaction, every heart that prioritizes wealth over people. We ask that You expose the darkness and bring conviction to those in authority who have betrayed their sacred trust. Like Nehemiah, raise up godly leaders who will stand in the gap, rebuke injustice, and demand restoration for the oppressed.

Father, we pray for the people of Singapore who suffer under these burdens—those who are denied jobs, those who are overcharged, those who are pushed aside while foreigners are enriched. Comfort them, provide for them, and let them know that You see their struggle. Give them courage to speak out and wisdom to act righteously. May Your Church in Singapore rise up with boldness, preaching the Gospel and living out Your command to *"act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with Your God"* (Micah 6:8).

We rebuked the spirit of greed, corruption, and idolatry that has taken hold in the hearts of those in power. Break their hardness of heart, Lord, and turn them to repentance. Let them remember that *"the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil"* (1 Timothy 6:10, WEB) and that they will give an account to You for their stewardship. If they refuse to repent, we pray that You would remove them from their positions and replace them with men and women who fear You and seek the good of the people.

Lord, we also ask for Your mercy on Singapore. Do not let the sins of the leaders bring judgment upon the innocent. Instead, let this be a time of awakening—a turning back to You in humility and faith. May the people cry out to You, and may You hear from heaven and heal their land (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Finally, Father, we pray for the salvation of those who are lost in this system—both the oppressors and the oppressed. Let them see their need for Jesus Christ, the only One who can break the chains of sin and set them free. May the Gospel spread mightily in Singapore, transforming hearts and bringing true justice and peace.

We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who alone has the power to change hearts and nations. Amen.

To those who see this injustice and feel helpless: do not lose heart. God is not blind to what is happening. Continue to pray, to speak out with wisdom, and to trust in the Lord’s timing. Remember the words of Psalm 37: *"Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers! For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb. Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act"* (Psalm 37:1-5, WEB).

If you are a believer in Singapore, we encourage you to gather with other like-minded Christians to pray and seek God’s face for your nation. Fast, intercede, and ask the Lord to raise up Nehemiahs in your midst—leaders who will stand for righteousness. And if you are not yet a believer, we urge you to turn to Jesus Christ, who alone can save you from the corruption of this world and give you eternal hope.

Let us also remember that our ultimate citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20), and our fight is not against flesh and blood, but against the spiritual forces of evil (Ephesians 6:12). So put on the full armor of God, stand firm in faith, and keep praying for justice to roll down like waters (Amos 5:24). The Lord hears the cries of His people.
