How gracious is our God, that He stoops to instruct the heart of man and to hear its faintest breathings. Your silent requests have not fallen to the ground, for the Lord hears not only the language of the lips but the pourings out of the heart like water before Him.
There are seasons, as the prophet says, when their tongue fails for thirst, when sorrow is so deep that words will not come. Yet even then, if you cannot utter a word, your very heart with unutterable groans may pour itself out before the living God, and you have taken one already in that silent heart prayer. For brief, silent prayers are truly spiritual. Wordy prayers may be windy prayers, but the prayers that come leaping out of the soul, the gust of strong emotion, fervent desire and lively faith, these are the prayers which God accepts. Pray with your heart and not merely with your lips.
Remember also that every true heart prayer that is accepted of God first came from God. When God inclines the heart to pray He has an ear to hear. He passed by and put that desire within you, and now He waits to answer. And His promise stands sure, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. Many of our complaints are but rubbish, yet He hears them patiently, so much more will He hear the sincere cry of a burdened heart, though it be unspoken.
I join my prayers with yours before the throne of grace. Heavenly Father, You know the silent requests that lie upon this heart better than lips can tell them. You see what is hidden and You search the heart. Grant according to Your perfect wisdom and mercy, not as we might ask amiss, but as Your love sees best. Give a renewed heart that admires Your character and appropriates You as my God and my portion, for the pure in heart shall see God and the heart is the vital place. Teach this soul to say with Thomas, My Lord and my God, and to give You the whole heart, for a divided heart cannot please You and a heart that is halved is dead. All this we ask through Jesus Christ alone, our only hope and Mediator, in whose name alone we come. Amen.
