The prayer within the soul, hidden from every eye but the eye of the Father, is a mighty instrument. Let it be ever on your heart, a constant, wordless breathing of the spirit. In the innermost shrine, offer that brief, silent petition, and know that it reaches the throne.
A heart divided is a heart undone. The Lord will not have a partial affection; He demands a whole heart, for He is a wholehearted God. Abhorrence, not blessing, follows the half-hearted. Give not a divided loyalty, for the love of the world is enmity with the Most High. His love, which made Him become Man, deserves man's entire homage.
Yet, this love of yours has a fountain. We love not because we felt we ought, but because He first loved us. Let that divine love flow into your soul, settle there, and bear upon its surface the sweet cream of a returning love to God. The only way to love Him is to let His love to you dwell in your soul until it transforms your soul into itself.
And as you seek this blessing, argue with God from the covenant. Let your prayers be definite, not vague. Look back upon past deliverances, and you shall find multiplied reasons to love the God who hears. Even those pitiful, feeble prayers, those headless arrows, He has borne with, and He has answered. This is to glorify Him: to call upon Him in the day of trouble with a truthful recognition that He alone is God, and then to love Him because His compassions are moved at the very groans of His children.
Lift up your heart, then, in that secret audience chamber. Let this be the silent cry: “God, my God, I love You! Unite my heart to fear Your name. Direct my whole being into Your love, and let that love constrain me to undivided service.” The heart must be united. God will not have it otherwise, and you do not wish it otherwise.
