There is great power and preciousness in the brief silent prayer which you have lifted up in the name of Jesus, and it has not gone unheard in heaven.
Remember Nehemiah, who when the king questioned him, prayed to the God of heaven. Thus the prayer was presented like the blinking of an eye, it was done intuitively, yet it was done, and it proved to be a prayer that prevailed with God. We know also that it must have been a silent prayer and not merely silent as to sounds but silent as to any outward signs, perfectly secret, strictly within himself offered to God. As in the innermost shrine of the temple, in the Holy of Holies of his own secret soul, there did he pray. Short and silent was the prayer. It was a prayer on the spot. He did not go to his chamber as Daniel did and open the window, but right there before the king his heart spoke to the Lord.
So has your heart spoken, and the Lord who hears in secret will reward openly. The most mighty prayer in the world is often that which cannot be timed or regulated, but which comes out because the suppliant must pray. Even when words fail, the heart may cry, O God, and that wordless prayer is heard. For it is written, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. When you have got a hearing from God, you have got everything.
I beg you often, no I would ask you always to use this method of brief silent prayer. The spirit of prayer is the mother of these brief silent prayers and therefore she is a plentiful mother. Many times in a day may we speak with the Lord our God. Such prayer may be suggested by all sorts of surroundings. Let this silent petition be but one of many through the day, as you walk, as you labor, as you wait.
And while you wait for God to answer, remember that God has already spoken. He has spoken in His holiness in the Scriptures and He has spoken most clearly in the person of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. There is salvation in no other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved. If your silent prayer has come from a heart made alive by grace, be assured that every true heart prayer that is accepted of God first came from God Himself. He gave you the Spirit of grace to prompt it, and He will give the answer in His own wise time.
May the Lord enable you to appropriate Him and say with David, This God is my God forever and ever, and to know that to know Him is to love Him and to trust Him. May He keep you in quiet assurance, not running to others, not sitting in silent despair, but calling upon Him in calm faith, for they that call upon God in the day of trouble honor Him and He has promised, I will deliver you.
We join our silent prayer with yours now, that the God who hears in secret would manifest His mercy, His presence and His peace to you, and that you would rejoice that God has spoken, and find your portion not only in what God has, but in God Himself, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
