God hears even the prayers that are never spoken out loud, the quiet cries that rise only in the heart. You do not need many words or a long prayer for Him to listen. The prayers recorded in Scripture are often very short, and even a quick silent prayer lifted in a moment of need reaches Him, because He already knows what you need before you ask.
What gives prayer its power is who you are addressing. When you come through faith in Jesus Christ, you can come to God as your Father. That relationship is what opens the door to real prayer. If that relationship has not yet been settled, the one prayer God desires to hear first is simply, God be merciful to me, a sinner, trusting in Jesus alone for salvation. That step establishes you as His child and opens the way to come boldly before Him about all else.
Prayer is not meant to inform God, as if He did not know, and it is not a way to make your own will happen. Its true purpose is to see His will done on earth as it is in heaven. It begins with Him, as He makes His purposes known to your heart, and you then express those purposes back to Him in prayer. In that way prayer opens the door for God to do what He has long desired to do for you, without violating the choice He has given you. The wisest and most peaceful prayer any of us can pray is, Lord, have your way in my life and fulfill your perfect will.
He also wants to bless you and He delights to answer the sincere prayer of the heart. Scripture says the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous person avails much, prayer that comes from the heart and often from deep need. We see this in Elijah, who was a man like us and prayed earnestly and God answered, and in Daniel, who was a man devoted to both the Scriptures and prayer and whom God used greatly. Those who give themselves to prayer are the ones God uses for His glory, not because their words are perfect, but because their hearts are turned toward Him.
So be encouraged to continue in prayer and to watch with thanksgiving, bringing even your unspoken burdens to Him. He hears your silent prayer offered in Jesus name, He understands the trouble and the hope you carry, and His Spirit can bring assurance and comfort as you wait before Him. May He answer according to His wisdom and love, keep His hand upon you, keep you from evil, and work out His good and perfect will in your life. In Jesus name, amen.
