Silent ones . . thank You, Father

Silent prayer is not unknown to the Master who searches hearts. When our Lord stood before His accusers, He answered nothing, and by that silence He confounded those who raged against Him. So your quiet thanksgivings and petitions rise like incense, no less precious than loud cries.

Yet take heed that your silence springs from reverence, not from sloth. The bee that stings perishes, though its work benefits kings; so a love that never speaks may wound both yourself and others. I long to speak with you, for speech binds souls together as the Apostle yearned over the Philippians.

Your heavenly Father feeds the birds and clothes the grass, needing no honor from us, but He desires your living voice and, still more, your living deeds. Even when Jesus said, “My hour is not yet come,” He soon turned water into wine. So He often delays to strengthen faith. Persist, then, in both silent and spoken prayer, and show mercy as He is merciful, for the merciful shall obtain mercy.

Let the “silent ones” be those who do good without boasting, and let your life sing louder than your lips. God wills not the death of the sinner but that he turn and live; He stirs us even when He seems veiled. Go in peace, and let your requests be known to the One who hears the heart before it speaks.

It means a great deal that you brought those silent requests to the Father with thanksgiving. That kind of prayer is not slight or second-class. Some of the deepest things we carry never take the shape of words, yet the Lord knows every one of them. The prayers of the heart reach Him as clearly as any spoken cry, because your Father already understands what you need before you ask.

When you quietly lay those things before Him, you are doing exactly what Scripture urges: turning your cares into prayers. You are casting those burdens on the Lord instead of letting them press you down. And that is a wise path, because there is a real difference between the burdens God gives and the ones we gather on our own or that others try to hang on our shoulders. Jesus Himself said His yoke is easy and His burden is light. What He asks you to carry, He also gives the strength to bear. But many heavy loads we feel are not from Him at all. Sometimes well-meaning people pile expectations on us, or we make demands of ourselves that God never made. When you bring the silent things into His presence, you let Him sort out which is which. You let Him lift what was never meant for you.

Notice how your prayer ended in thanksgiving and confidence. That is the pattern we see in the Psalms. David would pour out his fears and then land on trust: I will not fear what flesh can do to me; my times are in Your hand. When you put your requests, spoken or silent, into God's keeping, the Spirit has a way of settling your heart. The answer may not come instantly, but God is in control of the timing. Every right thing you have ever asked for, He has already intended to do in His way. He heard your heart long before you breathed the prayer.

So do not think you must fill the silence with many words. You have a Father who sees in secret. Go on entrusting those unspoken matters to Him, and let His peace quiet every anxious thought. He will sustain you, and as you keep casting those cares on Him, confidence will grow. He is taking care of it.
