Shaking the Dirt A Prayer of Gratitude

Shaking the Dirt 30 Jul 2026 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. - 2 Corinthians 4:8-10 Devotional: A dog fell into a farmer's well. After assessing the situation, the farmer decided that neither the dog nor the well was worth the bother of saving. He'd bury the old dog in the well and put him out of his misery. When the farmer began shoveling dirt down the well, initially the old dog was hysterical. But as the dirt hit his back, the dog realized every time dirt landed on his back, he could shake it off and step up. "Shake it off and step up; shake it off and step up!" he repeated to himself. No matter how painful the blows were, the old dog kept shaking the dirt off and stepping up. It wasn't long before the dog, battered and exhausted, stepped triumphantly over the wall of that well. What seemed as though it would bury him actually benefited him - all because of the way he handled his adversity. The adversities that come along to bury us usually have within them the potential to bless us. Forgiveness, faith, prayer, praise, and hope are some of the biblical ways to shake it off and step up out of the wells in which we find ourselves Prayer: Gracious Lord of All, as I keep my mind set on Jesus I thank you for the fact that you are using everyday life to test and grow me. In Jesus' name, Amen. i just got my first job im glad when ever i sed i dont car about u u didint give up un me im thankfull for evrything u did in my life plaes keep reminding me so i never forget what u did so we all can be forgiven lord thank u for evry thing thank u for helping us when life is hard when we are sad u never laev us and that so how strong your love is **A Prayer of Gratitude** Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for always being there for me. Thank You for never leaving my side, even during the times when I felt lost, confused, angry, or far away from You. Thank You for loving me with a love that never gives up, never runs out, and never changes. Lord, I want to thank You for every blessing You have given me, even the ones I didn't notice at the time. Thank You for waking me up each morning, for the breath in my lungs, for the strength to keep going, and for the countless ways You have protected me when I didn't even realize I needed protecting. Thank You for being patient with me. There were moments when I doubted You, questioned You, ignored You, or even told You to go away. Yet You never abandoned me. Instead, You stayed close, waiting with open arms, loving me through every mistake, every failure, and every moment of weakness. Your mercy is greater than my failures, and Your grace is more than I could ever deserve. Father, thank You for seeing the person I am becoming instead of only the mistakes I have made. Thank You for forgiving me every time I come to You with a sincere heart. Thank You for reminding me that I am never too far gone, never forgotten, and never alone. When life has been difficult, You have been my comfort. When I have been afraid, You have been my courage. When I have been weak, You have carried me. When I have cried, You have collected every tear. When I didn't know what to pray, You still knew my heart. Thank You for listening to every silent prayer, every whispered cry, and every hope I couldn't put into words. Lord, thank You for the people You have placed in my life, for every lesson You have taught me, and for every closed door that protected me from what wasn't meant for me. Even when I couldn't understand Your plan, You were working everything together for my good. Help me to trust You more each day. Teach me to love You with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. Help me to follow Your path, even when it is difficult. Fill my heart with peace when I feel anxious, with hope when I feel discouraged, and with joy that comes from knowing You are always with me. Please forgive me for the times I have let fear, pride, or anger get in the way of my relationship with You. Help me grow into the person You created me to be. Give me a heart that is kind, forgiving, humble, and full of compassion for others. Lord, I surrender my worries, my dreams, my future, and every part of my life into Your hands. I know Your plans are better than mine, and I choose to trust You, even when I cannot see what lies ahead. Thank You for Your endless faithfulness. Thank You for Your unconditional love. Thank You for never giving up on me, even when I wanted to give up on myself. Thank You for staying when I pushed You away. Thank You for welcoming me back every single time with grace instead of condemnation. May my life bring You glory. Help me to remember Your goodness every day and to never take Your love for granted. Let my words, my actions, and my heart reflect Your light so that others may see You through me. No matter what tomorrow brings, I know I don't have to face it alone because You are with me. Thank You for being my refuge, my strength, my Savior, and my constant friend. I love You, Lord. Thank You for hearing my prayer, for loving me beyond measure, and for never, ever leaving me. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

We rejoice with you in the blessing of your first job! This is a testament to God’s faithfulness and provision in your life. The excitement and gratitude you express are beautiful reflections of a heart that recognizes God’s hand at work, even in the small and practical details of daily living. Your words remind us of the truth in Philippians 4:19, "My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus." It is clear that you are learning to trust Him more with each step, and that is something to celebrate.

Your prayer of gratitude is deeply moving and aligns with the heart of Scripture. We are especially encouraged by your acknowledgment of God’s unwavering presence, even in moments of doubt, confusion, or distance. Your words echo the promise in Deuteronomy 31:8, "Yahweh himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." This is a truth we must cling to, especially in seasons of transition or uncertainty. Your first job is not just a personal achievement, it is an opportunity to glorify God through your work, your attitude, and your witness to others. As Colossians 3:23-24 reminds us, "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ."

We also want to encourage you to continue seeking God’s wisdom as you navigate this new season. The workplace can present unique challenges, from ethical dilemmas to relationships with coworkers. Proverbs 3:5-6 offers a timeless reminder: "Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." As you grow in your career, let your faith be the foundation that guides your decisions, your words, and your interactions with others. Remember, too, that your testimony in the workplace can be a powerful witness to those around you. Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16).

Your prayer also reflects a heart that is learning to surrender, surrendering worries, dreams, and even past mistakes to God’s perfect plan. This is a mark of spiritual maturity and a posture we should all strive to emulate. In Romans 12:1-2, we are called to offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, as our true and proper worship. This means laying down our own agendas and trusting that God’s ways are higher than ours. Your willingness to do this is a beautiful example of what it means to walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7).

We do want to gently remind you of the importance of guarding your heart and mind, especially in a new environment. The world often promotes values and behaviors that do not align with Scripture, and it can be easy to compromise without even realizing it. Proverbs 4:23 warns us, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." This includes being mindful of the influences you allow into your life, the conversations you engage in, and the standards you uphold. Surround yourself with fellow believers who can encourage you and hold you accountable, and remain rooted in God’s Word. Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." Let Scripture be your guide as you navigate this new chapter.

Let us pray for you:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts full of gratitude for the way You are moving in the life of Your child. Lord, we thank You for the provision of this first job and for the doors You have opened. We ask that You would continue to guide and direct every step, that this opportunity would not only be a means of provision but also a platform for Your glory. Father, we pray that You would fill this dear one with Your wisdom, discernment, and strength as they navigate this new season. Help them to work heartily, as unto You, and to be a light in their workplace.

Lord, we ask that You would guard their heart and mind from the temptations and distractions of the world. Surround them with godly influences and give them the courage to stand firm in their faith, even when it is unpopular. Help them to see every challenge as an opportunity to grow closer to You and to trust in Your perfect plan. Father, we also pray for their relationships, both with coworkers and with fellow believers. May they be a source of encouragement and truth, reflecting Your love and grace in all they do.

We ask that You would continue to cultivate a spirit of gratitude in their heart, that they would never take Your blessings for granted. Remind them daily of Your faithfulness, Your love, and Your promises. Help them to surrender their worries, their dreams, and their future into Your hands, trusting that You are working all things together for their good (Romans 8:28). Lord, we pray that You would use this season to draw them even closer to You, that they would grow in their love for You and their desire to serve You wholeheartedly.

Father, we also lift up any areas of their life where they may be struggling, whether it be fear, doubt, or past mistakes. We ask that You would bring healing and restoration, and that You would fill them with Your peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Help them to walk in the freedom and forgiveness that You offer, and to extend that same grace to others.

Lord, we thank You for the way You are shaping them into the person You created them to be. May their life be a testament to Your goodness, Your faithfulness, and Your love. Use them mightily for Your kingdom, and let their words and actions point others to You. We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, our Savior and Redeemer. Amen.

Continue to seek God’s face daily, dear one. Let your gratitude be a constant reminder of His goodness, and let your life be a living testimony to His grace. You are not alone in this journey, He is with you, and so are we, standing with you in prayer and encouragement. May the Lord bless you abundantly as you step into this new season with faith and trust in Him.

We're so glad you shared this. A first job is a real milestone, and hearing the thankfulness in your words is moving. It's clear you know deep down that you didn't get here alone, that God's patience and steady presence carried you even through the times you pulled away or told Him you didn't care. The fact that you see that now, and that you want to keep seeing it, is evidence of something alive and growing in you.

When we truly feel grateful, it does something quiet but powerful inside us. It settles our hearts because it confirms we've received something good, that we haven't been left to figure everything out by ourselves. Your prayer asks God to keep reminding you so you never forget. That's a wise request. One simple way that happens is by pausing in the ordinary moments to name one small thing you couldn't have orchestrated on your own. Over time, that habit builds a kind of memory in your soul, a steady awareness that you're being carried. You don't have to drum up big emotions. Just notice and say "thank you."

We're right there with you, grateful for what God has done and trusting He'll keep doing it.

Jesus, thank You for this job and for every quiet way You held this person close when they felt far away. Thank You that Your love doesn't depend on our getting it right. Keep their heart tender and their memory fresh. Anchor them in the truth that You never leave, and let that confident gratitude shape how they step into each new day. In Your name, amen.

Lord Jesus please richly bless, protect and guide them. Please help them in accordance with your perfect will Father. Thank you and praise you. In Jesus name. Amen.

You have written a prayer that rises like the incense of the temple, and I perceive in it the mark of one who knows the pardoning love of Christ. When a soul newly rescued from the pit cries out in gratitude, the angels bend low to listen, for such worship is the sweetest beneath the sun. The Lord has done great things for you, and you do well to remember them. That first taste of deliverance, the first kiss of peace when guilt was rolled away, those early espousals, God treasures them. He says, "I remember you, the kindness of your youth, the love of your espousals." Never let your memory grow dim. Keep the well of gratitude ever open, lest you forget Him who blotted out your sins for His own sake.

You speak of shaking off the dirt and stepping up. The world throws its shovelfuls, but our Lord knows how to make the very things meant to bury us become the means of our rising. Yet take heed: the greatest danger is not the dirt flung from without, but the decline of love within. When first we believe, we burn with a holy flame; we would do anything for Christ. But how soon the heart cools! I pray you guard that first love with godly jealousy. Go often to the cross, for there gratitude is renewed. There you see the Son of God who loved you and gave Himself for you, and between Christ and you nothing stands but love. That love abides; He cannot love you more, He will not love less. Let that truth be the anchor of your soul.

This new employment is a token of His faithfulness, yet remember you carry your danger with you. Temptation lurks in every calling, and the place that seems safest may prove a snare. Do not be in haste to flee the common trials of your station, for He is able to keep you from falling. The very fact that you feel your poverty of spirit, that you know you need Him moment by moment, is the first step of the blessed ladder. It is when we think we stand that we totter. Depend wholly upon Christ. Draw near to Him in communion, for neglect of that secret fellowship is the sure thief of first love. Let no day close without your having laid your hand afresh upon the great foundation-stone of His finished work. Forgiveness is a done deed, complete and divine, "I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions", and from that fountain springs all holiness, all service, all praise.

Let your gratitude be a living thing, not confined to a prayer, but spread over all your days. Serve Him in the common round of your new duties. Serve His children. Prove your love by feeding His lambs, by a humble walk, by a tender conscience. What the world needs to see is not a religion of words but of power, a faith that shakes off trouble and turns it into a wing. Your prayer pleads to be reminded. Then be reminded daily: He that began a good work in you will perform it. Christ first, you last, nothing between but love. That love constrained you when you hated Him; now that you are wakened, let it sweetly compel you to steadfastness. The God who numbered the hairs of your head when you were in reckless rebellion will not now cast you off. Faithful is He that calleth you, who also will do it.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

You have brought glad tidings indeed, for there is no greater joy than to hear of a soul shaking off the dirt and stepping up out of the well through gratitude. The remembrance you now hold, that God did not give up when you pushed Him away, is a treasure. Do not let it slip. When Paul heard that the Thessalonians had a good remembrance of him, he was greatly comforted, for it showed their love was steadfast. How much more does your good remembrance of God’s mercies refresh the heart of the Lord and strengthen your own soul?

See how even the adversities that seemed meant to bury you became, in His mercy, a means of lifting you up. This is the way of God with those who fix their mind on Him. When you keep His goodness ever before your eyes, the troubles that come cannot crush you. The irksome things end with this present life, but the good things He promises remain immortal. So let this gratitude you speak of be not a passing emotion, but a constant habit of the mind. Every day recall what He has done, especially in those moments when you feel weak or tempted to despair. For if the remembrance of a beloved friend can lift the spirit and make all burdens light, what will the remembrance of God, who loves you in deed, accomplish?

Now that He has granted you your first job, see it as a trust lent to you. The riches you will earn are not truly your own, but given so you might traffic for heaven. Do not forget the needy, for love is the fulfilling of the law. Would you resent yourself or hold a grudge against your own body? Then do not do so to your neighbor. Let the love that has been poured out on you flow freely to others, and you will find that many grievous things vanish. A grateful heart never seeks revenge, never envies, but wishes all good things for everyone, just as it wishes for itself.

Beware above all of ingratitude, which is the wicked servant’s sin. When you confessed that you once told God you did not care, and yet He remained, you saw His long-suffering. Do not repay such love with forgetfulness. You ask to be reminded, and that is a wise prayer. But know that God has already given you a perpetual remembrance, the very Sacrifice we offer each Lord’s Day. It is not a new sacrifice but a remembrance of the one once offered, the death of Jesus, so that His life may be manifested in our mortal bodies. When you approach that table, you see His love set forth, the price paid for your forgiveness. There you are reminded that nothing can separate you from Him. Let that be your constant step upward out of every well the world may dig for you.

Every time the dirt landed on that dog’s back, the shaking and stepping up wasn’t just a survival instinct, it was the very thing that turned intended harm into deliverance. That picture stays with you because it’s true of the life of faith. What was meant to bury you, God uses to bless you, if you’ll keep shaking it off and stepping onto it. And your prayer shows you’ve already tasted that. You saw it in the small mercy of a first job, but even more, you saw it in the patient love that stayed when you said you didn’t care. That kind of love doesn’t come from human endurance; it’s the giving love of God himself, poured into your life through Jesus Christ.

He never left you. Not when you pushed, not when you doubted, not when you were sure you’d ruined it. That’s because your standing before him isn’t built on your performance. You’ve been justified by faith, declared righteous through your trust in the blood of Christ. So God doesn’t hold your past rebellion against you. He isn’t disgusted or disappointed in you as his child. He has given you peace with himself, and by that same faith you now stand inside his grace, with full access to all he is. That’s why you can be homesick for him even while thanking him: his Spirit is in you, causing you to love him back.

When you ask him to keep reminding you so you never forget, you’re asking for exactly what faith does. Faith is the substance of what you hope for, the way you cling to the promises he made. And through your faith in Jesus, you’ve been brought into the same stream of blessing he spoke over Abraham. Every promise God ever made to bless, to multiply, to keep, those are your covenant now. Not because you earned them, but because the one who took your curse has brought you in. So you can face hard days knowing that what hits you isn’t a sign he’s left. It’s dirt he’s allowing, and he’s already given you the grace to shake it off and step higher. The dog didn’t climb out on his own strength; he simply kept responding rightly to what was thrown at him. You do that by keeping your mind set on Jesus, by feeding on his Word, by adding to your faith that virtuous trust that chooses to believe his love is at work even when you can’t feel it.

What you’re experiencing now, the gratitude, the awareness of his patience, the desire to never take his grace for granted, that’s his love being perfected in you. It’s the beginning of a life where you love others not because they’re lovely, but because his agape has so filled you that it spills over. So don’t let fear whisper that he might finally get through with you. He won’t. His love abides. Faith, hope, and love all abide, and the greatest of these is the love that held you when you wanted to give up on yourself. Keep walking in the Spirit, keep letting that love dominate your thoughts, and every time more dirt falls, you’ll find you’re actually being lifted closer to the light. He who began this in you will carry it to completion, kept by his power through faith, until you step out into endless joy and see his face.
