Second opinion

My doctors have stopped my cancer treatment, because they think my body is too weak and the chemo isn't working. So I've asked for a second opinion at a another hospital. Please pray in the name of Jesus Christ that the other hospital has medicine or treatment for me.

We join with you in prayer in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift your need before our Heavenly Father with urgency and compassion. To hear that treatment has been stopped because your body is weak and the chemotherapy is not working is heavy and frightening, and we stand with you asking for the Lord's mercy, wisdom, and healing touch in the days ahead as you seek a second opinion.

We take comfort that our God is the Lord who heals us. Scripture reminds us to Bless Yahweh, my soul, and do not forget all his benefits, who forgives all your sins, who heals all your diseases Psalm 103:2-3. We cling to His promise when He says But I will restore health to you and I will heal you of your wounds, says Yahweh Jeremiah 30:17. Even when medicine reaches its limits, nothing is impossible with God, for with God all things are possible Matthew 19:26. He is also our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble Psalm 46:1, and He gives power to the weak and to him who has no might he increases strength Isaiah 40:29. We pray that you will feel His presence and peace even in this uncertainty, as we are told Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7.

We pray together for you now. Father in heaven, in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, we bring our dear one before Your throne of grace. You know the weakness of this body, the disappointment and fear that comes with this news, and the hope placed in this second opinion. We ask that You guide the doctors and specialists at the other hospital, grant them wisdom and discernment, and if it is Your will, open a door for effective medicine or treatment that can be received with strength. We ask You to lay Your healing hand upon this body, to strengthen what is weak, to restore what is broken, and to do what only You can do. We pray for Your will to be done and for Your peace to guard this heart and the hearts of loved ones. Grant courage for each appointment, comfort in each waiting period, and assurance that You are near. We also thank You that through Jesus we have access to You and hope beyond this life, for we know that You work all things together for good for those who love You and are called according to Your purpose Romans 8:28. We ask all this in the mighty and healing name of Jesus Christ, our hope and our healer. Amen.

We encourage you to continue to seek the Lord daily, to bring every fear and hope to Him in prayer, and to let those around you, including your medical team and your church family, support you and pray over you as James 5:14-15 teaches. We are trusting with you that God will lead you to the right physicians and the right counsel, and whether through medicine or through His direct touch, that you will experience His sustaining grace. Do not be afraid, for He says Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness Isaiah 41:10. We continue to hold you in prayer for strength, for wisdom for your doctors, and for healing according to His perfect will.

We are praying in Jesus' name that the team giving the second opinion will have wisdom and care as they look over your history, and that you will feel clearly heard and well supported in that appointment. We are also praying for steadiness and peace for you in these days of waiting, whatever path forward they are able to offer.

Prolonged illness can leave anyone feeling fragile and worn down, and it is understandable if you feel weary or anxious right now. You do not have to carry this alone. If you can, it often helps to bring a trusted family member or close friend with you to the second opinion visit, with a short written list of your current medicines, past treatments, and the questions most on your heart. Another set of ears can make it easier to remember what is said when you are tired. Please keep close to your medical team for guidance through this process.

Father, we lift this dear friend to You in Jesus' name. You know their body, their fears and their hopes. We ask for wisdom for these new doctors, for Your comfort to surround them in the waiting, and for strength for each day. Your request has been heard and we have carried it before the Lord with much tenderness and prayer. To be told that treatment must stop because the body is too weak and the medicine has not prevailed is a great weariness in the length of the way, and we do not make light of the heaviness that now rests upon you.

Yet we are reminded of the word, You are wearied in the length of your way, yet you did not say, There is no hope. There is indeed no hope in ourselves, but there is hope in Him whom God has provided to be the Savior and the Healer. Even a little faith is precious faith when it begins and ends with Jesus. Faith is not a mere notion, but a dropping down into the arms of the strong One, trusting that His bridge is strong enough to carry us over the stream. If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, it is true faith, and it is the gift of God, and the Lord looks upon it with tender compassion.

We have prayed for you in the name of Jesus Christ, as you asked, that the Lord who has given wisdom to physicians would guide the hands and minds at the other hospital, and that if it be His gracious will, He would open a way for further medicine or treatment that may help your body. We have asked that He would give skill and discernment to those you will see for this second opinion, and that He would sustain your strength day by day.

Above all we have prayed that you may pluck a leaf from that Tree of Life whose leaves are for the healing of the nations. The least thing about Christ is healing virtue. His fruit is sweet and nourishing, and even His leaves, His lowest and gentlest touches, are full of healing. May you by a poor trembling faith take what God gives in Christ, and find that celestial comfort which changes the life blood and brings peace to the soul. It is that touch of personal faith which brings peace, and high thoughts of God beget hope, and hope leads to confidence in Him.

We pray that the Lord will keep you under the shield of faith, which quenches the fiery darts of fear and doubt, and that you may know His presence as the great Physician who binds up the broken hearted and who alone can say whether healing shall come by means or by His own immediate hand. May He grant you quietness of spirit, freedom from despair, and a good hope of eternal life through believing in Jesus Christ, and may He let His will be done in your body and soul for your everlasting good.

We will continue to bear you up before the throne of grace, asking the Father to do abundantly above what we can ask, according to His wisdom and mercy, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
