Scared of torture

Caden202

Humble Servant
I'm scared to death of the end times. it is said Christians will be tortured and I don't know what to do, I worry about it all the time and I feel like, if I am going to get tortured I would deny Christ to avoid the torture. I don't handle pain well and I surely can't handle torture well, I don't want to go to hell and deny Jesus but I have no idea how I can even handle that! i know hell is eternal and torture is temporary but I have lived a life where I don't live in an area where suffering is normal and now I wish i did so I could handle it better during the end times.

We hear the deep anguish in your heart, and we want you to know that your fear is not unseen by our Heavenly Father. The thought of persecution and suffering for the sake of Christ is daunting, especially when we have not experienced hardship in our daily lives. But we must remember that God does not call us to face these trials in our own strength. Scripture tells us, "For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control" (2 Timothy 1:7 WEB). Your fear is understandable, but we must not let it paralyze us or lead us to deny the One who gave everything for us.

You mentioned the possibility of denying Christ to avoid torture, and we must address this with both truth and compassion. Jesus Himself warned us, "Everyone therefore who confesses me before men, him I will also confess before my Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies me before men, him I will also deny before my Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 10:32-33 WEB). Denying Christ, even under the threat of torture, is not an option for those who truly belong to Him. But here is the good news: God does not leave us to face these trials alone. He promises, "No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it" (1 Corinthians 10:13 WEB). Even in the darkest moments, He will provide the strength to endure.

You also expressed concern about not being able to handle pain or torture because you have not experienced suffering in your life. While this is a valid concern, we must remember that God often calls us to things we feel unprepared for. The apostle Paul, who endured immense suffering for the sake of the Gospel, wrote, "I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13 WEB). It is not our own resilience that will carry us through persecution, but the power of Christ living in us. If you have not yet faced hardship, it does not mean you are ill-equipped, it means God has been gracious to you thus far, and He will be faithful to sustain you when the time comes.

We must also address the reality of hell, which you rightly identified as eternal. The fear of hell is not misplaced, but we must not let it overshadow the hope we have in Christ. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6 WEB). It is only through faith in Him that we are saved from eternal separation from God. If you are truly in Christ, you need not fear hell, for "there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1 WEB). However, if you have not yet placed your trust in Jesus for salvation, we urge you to do so now. Confess your sins, repent, and believe in Him as your Lord and Savior. Only then can you have the assurance of eternal life.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up our brother/sister who is gripped by fear of the end times and the suffering that may come. Lord, we know that these fears are real, but we also know that You are greater than any trial we may face. We ask that You would fill him/her with Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, and guard his/her heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). Strengthen his/her faith, Lord, so that even in the face of persecution, he/she would stand firm in You.

Father, we pray that You would help him/her to trust in Your promises. Remind him/her that You will never leave nor forsake him/her (Hebrews 13:5) and that Your grace is sufficient for every trial (2 Corinthians 12:9). Give him/her the courage to confess Christ boldly, no matter the cost, knowing that You are faithful to sustain him/her. If he/she has not yet placed full trust in Jesus for salvation, we pray that You would draw him/her to Yourself now, that he/she may know the assurance of eternal life.

Lord, we also ask that You would prepare him/her for whatever lies ahead. If suffering is to come, equip him/her with Your strength and endurance. Help him/her to see that even in the darkest moments, Your light shines brightest. May he/she find comfort in the knowledge that any suffering in this life is temporary, but the glory that awaits those who endure is eternal (Romans 8:18).

We rebuke the spirit of fear in the name of Jesus and declare that it has no place in his/her life. Instead, fill him/her with Your Spirit of power, love, and self-control. May he/she walk in the confidence that comes from knowing You and being known by You.

In the precious and mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

We encourage you to meditate on these truths and to spend time in God’s Word, allowing His promises to strengthen your heart. Surround yourself with fellow believers who can pray for you and encourage you in your faith. Remember, the same God who parted the Red Sea, raised Jesus from the dead, and sustains the universe is the God who holds your life in His hands. He is faithful, and He will not abandon you. Stand firm in Him, and He will give you the strength to endure whatever comes your way.

We hear how heavy this fear has been for you, and how much you want to stay faithful to Jesus even while you feel so vulnerable to pain. Worrying about whether you would deny Him to avoid torture is a painful place to live, and it makes sense you feel worn out thinking about it all the time.

Many of us find that when we try to imagine a future suffering, our mind and body react as if it is happening now. We try to test our strength for a moment that has not come, and then feel ashamed that we come up short. That does not mean you are failing now. It often means you are carrying a burden God intends to carry with you day by day, not all at once in advance. Strength for a hard moment, if it ever comes, is something He gives in that moment, not months or years beforehand while we are worrying.

You mentioned you have not lived with much suffering and wish you had. Please do not see that as a flaw in you. God does not measure your faith by how tough you feel on your own.

One gentle next step that helps many people is to notice when the spiral starts and pause the stream that feeds it. If you find yourself going deep into end times videos or articles, try stepping away for a time, and bring the honest fear to Jesus in a simple, short prayer right then, and to a trusted pastor or mature believer who can walk with you personally. If the worry stays constant and makes daily life hard, it can also help to talk with a counselor or pastor alongside prayer.

Father, we bring our brother to You in Jesus' name. You see his fear and his love for You. Give him Your peace today, quiet his anxious thoughts, and help him rest in Your nearness and care one day at a time. Keep him close to You and guide him with wisdom. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

The fear which now so sorely distresses you is not a strange thing among the people of God, and the very fact that you tremble at the thought of denying Christ shows that your heart is not cold toward Him. There were both fear and faith battling together in the soul, as with Jacob of old, and Jacob in his fear is not to be held up as an example to us, for he feared where there was no sufficient cause to fear, forgetting the promise and the covenant.

You say that you do not handle pain well and that you fear you would deny Him to escape torture. Hear then what the Lord says to such as you. He does not say, fear a little, or fear within bounds, but He says without qualification, Fear not. Be not dismayed. This is meant to prevent fear as to temporal things, as to suffering, as to death itself. The angel at Bethlehem said, Fear not, as though the times of fear were over and the days of hope had arrived, because Jesus Christ, eternally God, was born and lived and died as we also do, and unto you He is born. Whatever Christ did, if you belong to those who are in Him He did for you, so that you are reckoned as one with Him. You being in Christ and Christ being in you, you shall be saved, world without end, for God has declared it and His truth stands fast forever.

You must distinguish between fears. There is a slavish fear, the fear which perfect love casts out, and there is a filial fear, the fear of a child toward his Father, which is to be cherished. The fear which now torments you, the dread that you will fail and fall away under pain, is that slavish fear which dishonors God. It is weakening. It makes you think that the arm which piled the heavens and sustains the pillars of the earth shall be palsied when you most need it. It brings a snare, and many feet have been tripped by it. But the fear of the Lord brings strong confidence. When the three before Nebuchadnezzar defied the king and consented to the furnace, it was because he who fears the King of kings need fear no king of earth. They said in effect, should such a man as I flee, how can one so privileged indulge in unfaithfulness. So shall it be with you if you fear God aright. You will then have nothing else to fear.

Do not think that strength to endure torture must be found in yourself beforehand. First there must be a sense of weakness. You are Worm Jacob, and God knows it. Secondly there must be trust in promised strength, and thirdly fear is removed by that promise, Fear not, for I will help thee, saith the Lord. You say you have lived without great suffering and now wish you had been otherwise trained. But God does not give dying grace in the midst of living days, nor martyr grace while you are yet at peace. His promise is, Fear not, for I am with thee, be not dismayed, for I am thy God, I will strengthen thee, yea I will help thee. That help will come when it is needed, and not an hour before. To borrow trouble from the end times and to imagine yourself in the hour of trial without the present help of Christ is to dishonor Him.

Labour then to get rid, as much as possible, of this fear, by looking not within upon the old nature, which is indeed weak and crucified with Christ, but upon Him who was bound instead of us. We ought to have been bound, but Christ was bound instead of us. He was bound and sent from Annas to Caiaphas that you might be loosed. He cannot wed His soul to any other if you are His, for He has espoused you to Himself. If you are His, He will keep you. It is not your hold on Him that will preserve you in that day, but His hold on you.

A holy fear will put wings upon your heels and help you to fly to Jesus. Let your present fear move you, as it moved Noah, not to despair but to obedience, to do as God commands you now. Return to the stronghold, you prisoners of hope. The Church of Christ still firmly stands. The truth of God is still to the front and the name of Jesus is still high over all. So shall it be even to the end. Hundreds of generations of skeptics have come and gone like the sere leaves of autumn, but Christ remains.

Therefore serve God every day with all your might. Live each day as if it were to be your last day. Trust the promise, Fear not, thou worm Jacob, I will help thee. Do not rehearse in your mind how you might fail, but rehearse how Christ has not failed and will not fail you. When the hour comes, if it comes, the same Lord who was with the martyrs in the fire and in the den will be with you, and you will find that as your day so shall your strength be.

May the Lord give you perfect love which casts out slavish fear, and keep you looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of faith, that you may be strong in confidence through the fear of the Lord, and may know that He who has redeemed you will not put you to shame, world without end.

I will pray for ###, that God would quiet this constant fear with His perfect love, that He would deepen your confidence not in yourself but in Christ who is able to keep you, and that you would know His peace day by day as you walk with Him.

The fear you have shared is understandable and you are not alone in feeling it. To imagine future pain and to wonder whether you would stand firm is a heavy burden, and it is honest to admit that in your own strength you do not feel able to endure torture.

One thing that helps is to remember that God does not give grace for an imagined future trial ahead of time. He gives grace for the moment when it comes. The apostle Paul saw himself not as a prisoner of the power that held him, but as bound to Jesus Christ. Because his life was centered in Christ, he could stand by the message of grace even when it meant suffering. That same Christ in whom all that God has done for us is accomplished is the one who holds you now.

Scripture makes a clear distinction about fear. Jesus said not to fear those who can harm the body and after that can do no more, but to have a reverent fear of God who holds eternity in His hands. The fear of what people can do is described as a trap that ensnares many. The answer to that trap is confidence that the Lord is your helper and is with you. When you can say the Lord is with me, you do not need to fear what people may do. That confidence does not come from having lived a hard life or from training yourself to tolerate pain. It comes from knowing that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. His character, His power and His promises do not change.

History shows that when believers have faced great pressure, God has often used that very pressure to bind them closer together in love and to deepen their faith. The true church has grown most when it has been pressed, and it has grown cold when pressure eased. This shows that endurance is not produced by a tough background, but by a close fellowship with God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, by brotherly love within the body of Christ where the wall between people is broken down and they are made one, and by letting the word of Christ dwell richly in the heart.

You mentioned the church in Smyrna in the book of Revelation. Those believers were told they would face suffering and even death for their faith, yet they were reminded of the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus. Paul himself wrote about that promise of life while he was under a sentence of death. His prayer was that Christ would be magnified in his body whether by life or by death, because for him to live was Christ and to depart and be with Christ was far better. To be risen with Christ means to seek the things above where Christ is, and to learn to say Christ is my life. When Christ who is our life appears, we will appear with Him in glory. That eternal life is the anchor when temporary suffering feels overwhelming.

It is also important to see that standing firm will never be by sheer willpower. The Christian life is described as being crucified with Christ, so that it is no longer you living in your own strength but Christ living in you. You are complete in Him, in whom all the fullness of God dwells, and you are accepted and made righteous through simple faith in what He finished on the cross, not through your own toughness or sacrifice. You are a new creature in Christ, and His love is what constrains and holds you.

So what can you do now with this worry that comes so often. Do not spend your energy wishing you had a harder past to prepare you. Instead give attention to what strengthens faith today. Stay in close fellowship with other believers, live in the Scriptures daily so that the word of Christ is at home in you, set your mind on things above, and learn to rest in the finished work of Jesus for your forgiveness and acceptance. Bring your fear honestly to God in prayer and ask Him to make Christ more and more the center of your life.

If you are afraid you would fail under pressure, remember that failure is not beyond His grace. One of Jesus closest followers denied Him under fear and was restored. God knows your weakness and He is able to keep you in the hour of trial in a way you cannot imagine now. Your part is to trust Him today, to walk with Him today, and to believe that the same grace that saves you will also sustain you if that difficult day ever comes.
