Sadness

Your honest cry has been heard, and I have prayed for you in the name of Jesus. The heaviness you describe and the inability to find rest are not hidden from God. He sees the weight you carry and He cares deeply about your sorrow.

Scripture speaks of a spirit of heaviness, of wearing sadness like sackcloth. It also speaks of what God loves to do in that place. He lifts the sackcloth and clothes His people with gladness. He turns mourning into dancing. He gives the oil of joy instead of mourning and the garment of praise instead of a heavy spirit, so that your heart may sing to Him and not be silent. That exchange is His work. You do not have to manufacture joy on your own. You can ask Him to do what only He can do, to take the heavy garment and give you His lightness in return.

Part of the restlessness you feel, the inability to rest, often comes from a void inside when the voice of God and the word of God are not being heard in the heart. People wander and search from place to place trying to find what will satisfy, and still feel thirsty and faint. That thirst is real, and God wants to fill it. As you are able, turn to His word in a simple way, even a few verses at a time, and ask Him to speak to you through it. Let His word be what fills the empty place. He is the one who satisfies.

Even your sleeplessness and restlessness are not outside His reach. God can be at work in those wakeful hours. He is merciful and does not want to add sorrow upon sorrow. Like He had mercy when a faithful servant was sick near death and spared both him and those who loved him from multiplied grief, He sees your sorrow and His mercy is toward you now. He knows how heavy this feels and He is near.

The Bible also says that sorrow can be better than laughter, because by sadness of countenance the heart is made better. The heart of the wise is found in the house of mourning rather than in constant merriment. This does not make the pain pleasant, but it means your sadness is not wasted. God can use even this heavy season to make your heart deeper, softer, and more tuned to Him.

So I pray simply as you asked, that God helps you.

Father, in the name of Jesus I lift up this dear one who feels sadness as unbearable and heavy and who cannot find rest. Have mercy and bring help. Lift the spirit of heaviness and give the garment of praise. Take the mourning and bring gladness. Speak Your word to this heart and fill the void with Your presence. Grant rest, even tonight, the rest that comes from knowing You are near and You care. Let Your joy and comfort be felt in a real way. Do a healing work in the heart and make it better through Your grace. I ask this in Jesus name, Amen.

Thank you for giving us the privilege to pray on your behalf. We are glad that you asked us to stand in agreement with you in prayer. We have been remembering you before the Lord and lifting up your sadness before Him, even as you still gave praise be to God in the midst of it. We have prayed simply as you asked that God would help you, that He would lift this unbearable and heavy sadness and grant you rest when rest feels impossible.

We are trusting that God sees your heaviness and hears your cry for help. We hold to the promise that the Lord is close to the brokenhearted Psalm 34:18 and that Jesus invites all who are weary and burdened to come to Him for rest Matthew 11:28.

If your request was answered and God has lightened this sadness and given you rest, please post a praise report and let us all know so we can rejoice and thank God together. If your request does not seem to have been answered and the sadness still feels heavy and rest still feels out of reach, please post it again as a new request and allow us to continue with you in prayer.

We pray for you now. Father, we lift our dear friend to You and ask that You help and sustain with Your gentle hand. Take this heavy sadness and replace it with Your comfort and peace that passes understanding. Grant deep and restoring rest to body, mind and soul, and let Your nearness be felt day and night. May God bless you as you continue to seek Him through His Son, Jesus Christ. We pray this in Jesus Name, Amen.
