Your love for your cousin comes through so clearly in your prayer, and your sorrow is understandable. To watch someone you love suffer with cancer and other illness and to fear losing her is a heavy burden, and God sees both your love and your pain.

We join you in bringing her before the Lord in the name of Jesus. He has revealed Himself as the Lord who heals, the One who becomes to us what we need in our need. When we need salvation He is our Savior, when we need healing He is our healer. A large part of what we see in the Gospels is Jesus touching and healing those who were sick and afflicted, moved by tender compassion for them.

The Scriptures also show us that healing comes in different ways. Sometimes it was instant, sometimes it was gradual, sometimes with a touch, sometimes with only a word, sometimes by His presence and sometimes from a distance. Even the slow, natural processes of recovery that God has built into our bodies are divine, because He created nature and its processes. And His healing touches more than the body. He brings healing to the mind and emotions, to wounds and scars within, which is also His work.

There is much about healing we do not understand. We do not know why some are healed and others are not, even when we pray with earnest faith. Healing is a sovereign work of God and rests in His hands. It is not a measure of spiritual strength and it is wrong to place that burden on the sick or on those who love them and pray for them. We can pray with confidence and leave the outcome to His wisdom and goodness, trusting that His goodness is great and that He has laid up goodness for those who reverence Him.

In a time like this fear can quickly grip the heart, especially when we look at the problem more than we look at the Lord. Fear and faith cannot live together in the same place. When fear takes over, faith fades, and when faith is strong, fear is driven out. The cure for fear is to remember the Lord. As David said, though I walk through the valley of death, I will fear no evil for You are with me. He has promised to be with us in the darkest hours. The fear of the Lord that Scripture speaks of is not a terror, but a reverent awe as we consider who He is, His greatness and power and love. That awe is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge, and it brings a quiet confidence that God will care for those who walk with Him.

So we pray with you now. Father, in the name of Jesus we lift this dear cousin to You. You know her body, her sickness, and every need. We ask You to touch her and bring healing according to Your mercy, whether through a miraculous work or through the healing processes You have placed in the body and through the hands of those caring for her. Comfort her and comfort this family member who loves her so deeply. Drive out fear and fill their hearts with faith and peace as they keep their eyes on You. Give wisdom to doctors, strength for each day, and above all the assurance of Your presence and Your love through Jesus Christ. We trust her into Your good and sovereign hands, believing You hear and You care. Amen.
