To understand this we look at the context. In Revelation 13:16-17 we are told about the beast who causes all to receive a mark so that no one would be able to buy or to sell unless he has the mark, the name of the beast or the number of his name. This beast represents a world system and ruler empowered by Satan who opposes Christ and demands worship that belongs only to God. The number six hundred sixty-six is described as the number of a man, and in scripture seven is often the number of completeness and divine perfection, while six falls short of that. Three sixes emphasizes human imperfection and failure multiplied, a counterfeit of the divine Trinity, man trying to exalt himself as God but always falling short.

We want to gently encourage you not to become consumed with speculation or fear about calculating this number or identifying a specific person in a sensational way. Many have tried to use numerology or current events to predict the antichrist, but scripture calls us to wisdom that comes from God, not from curiosity or conspiracy. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. James 1:5 The wisdom we need is to remain faithful to Jesus, to endure, and to not be deceived. This is the patience of the saints, those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. Revelation 14:12 And we are reminded that greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world. 1 John 4:4

We also notice your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to lovingly share that it is only through Him that we have access to God and understanding of His Word. The whole book of Revelation is the Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants. Revelation 1:1 Apart from Him we cannot rightly understand prophecy nor can we be saved from the judgment that will come upon the beast and those who follow him. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6 There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12 If we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised him from the dead, we will be saved. Romans 10:9

So we encourage you to keep your eyes on Christ rather than on the beast. Do not fear, for God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:7

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son. We thank You for Your Word and for revealing Your plan through Him. We ask You to grant our friend wisdom and understanding as they study Revelation, not a spirit of fear or confusion but clarity and peace through Your Holy Spirit. Help us all to calculate rightly what matters most, that Jesus is Lord and that His victory is already secured at the cross. Guard our hearts from deception and from unhealthy obsession with the antichrist, and keep us faithful to follow the Lamb wherever He goes. If we have not fully trusted in Jesus, draw us to repentance and faith today so that our names are written in the Lamb's book of life. Strengthen us to endure, to keep Your commandments and hold fast to the faith of Jesus until He returns. We ask this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

There is wisdom to be sought in the very verse you have laid before us, and we are grateful you have brought it to prayer. Here is wisdom, says the Spirit, let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is six hundred threescore and six.

Many have puzzled over this number and many have feared where they ought not to fear. Remember what the Word teaches, that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. It is not a slavish dread that makes a man afraid of signs and numbers and the power of antichrist, but a holy reverence and awe of the living God which gives understanding. Where true faith is, there is a filial fear of God, like the fear of a child toward his father, and where that fear is, there is strong confidence. He that fears the Lord need not fear the beast nor the man whose number is counted.

You will notice that our Lord Jesus Christ is the First and the Last, the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. He is the sum and substance of salvation. The beast has a number, but Christ has a name which is high over all, in heaven and earth, before which angels and men shall fall and devils fear and fly. The number of a man can never stand against the name of the Son of God.

Therefore hear the word which comes so often from heaven to troubled hearts, Fear not. The angel said Fear not, as though the times of fear were over and the days of hope had come. Perfect love casteth out slavish fear, though it nourishes that holy fear which keeps us close to Christ. Do not fear the power of this world or the mystery of that number, but fear God and trust His promise. He says, Fear not, for I am with thee, be not dismayed for I am thy God. I will help thee, yea I will uphold thee.

If this verse has stirred any dread in you, let it drive you not to speculation but to the Saviour. Salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, and intricacies and difficulties are at an end when we simply believe and live. Look to Him, trust Him, and you are saved. He has delivered them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage, and He will deliver you from every fear that would ensnare you.

We will pray for you, that God will give you not a spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind, that you may grow in the fear of the Lord which brings blessing, and that you may rest in the strong confidence which belongs to those who are in Christ. May you be kept from the fear of man which bringeth a snare, and be kept in that holy awe which is the beginning of wisdom, until you see Him who is your All in All, and fear shall be turned to joy.
