We have heard your heart for this relationship and we join you in bringing it before the Lord together in Jesus' name. We understand your sadness that your boyfriend has stopped talking to you because you did not follow his investment plan, and your deep desire that he would value love over money, that he would seek you again and see you in person, and most of all that he would come to believe in God and that your relationship would have God at the center.
We want to gently and lovingly speak truth to you about what God says regarding love, money, and relationships. True love as God defines it is not conditional on money or financial obedience. We are reminded that love is patient and is kind, love does not envy, love does not brag, is not proud, does not behave itself inappropriately, does not seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth, bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. When affection is withdrawn or silence is used as punishment because you did not follow a financial plan, that is not reflecting this kind of love, and it is right for you to desire a love that is not rooted in money.
Scripture warns us about the danger of making money the center. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil in 1 Timothy 6:10 and no one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Mammon in Matthew 6:24. We encourage you to seek wise and godly counsel before following any investment plan, especially one that is pressured upon you within a relationship. Without consultation, plans are frustrated, but with many counselors they succeed in Proverbs 15:22. A man who truly loves you will respect your conscience and your boundaries and will not coerce you financially.
We also hear your desire for God to be in the center of your relationship, and this is beautiful and right, but we want to encourage you to think biblically about what this means. In God's design, a relationship between a man and a woman is courtship with the goal of marriage, a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman that honors God. We pray you are pursuing purity in this courtship, for marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the bed undefiled, but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers in Hebrews 13:4. Any sexual intimacy before or outside of marriage is fornication and not God's will for you, and we encourage you to flee sexual immorality in 1 Corinthians 6:18 and to keep yourselves pure as you discern marriage.
This also means we must speak about being equally yoked. Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship do righteousness and iniquity have in 2 Corinthians 6:14. Your longing for him to believe in God is good, but Scripture teaches us not to enter or to continue toward marriage with someone who does not yet know Christ, hoping he will change later. We encourage you to make his salvation your primary prayer, but to also ask God for discernment whether this relationship should continue toward marriage if he remains an unbeliever. Seek first God's Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well in Matthew 6:33. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight in Proverbs 3:5-6.
We noticed you spoke of God but did not mention Jesus Christ, and we want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and that anyone can be saved. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me in John 14:6. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved in Acts 4:12. To believe in God in a saving way is to repent of sin and put your faith in Jesus Christ, who died for our sins and rose again. We pray both you and your boyfriend will rest fully in Him.
So we pray together with you now.
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before Your throne of grace. We lift up this dear sister and her boyfriend to You. Lord, You know the hurt of silence and the confusion over money and love. We ask that You heal her heart, give her peace that surpasses understanding, and grant her wisdom and discernment. Show her clearly whether this man is seeking a godly marriage with her or whether his heart is driven by control or love of money. We pray You would convict him where he has not shown Christlike love, and soften his heart. Above all, Lord, we pray for his salvation, that he would truly believe in Jesus Christ, repent, and be born again, and that You would protect him each day and draw him to Yourself. If it is Your will, restore communication between them in a healthy and honest way, and help them to see each other in person only in a manner that honors You and keeps them pure. But above restoration, we pray Your will be done, and that You would be the center of her life, whether this relationship continues toward a godly marriage or not. Help her to wait on You, to guard her heart, and to seek wise counsel. We ask all this in the precious and only saving name of Jesus Christ, amen.
