Disciple of Prayer
My name is ### and my boyfriend and I just got back together, but he is struggling with depression and is shutting me out and not including me in things that is important to our family. I ask that you pray to help us through this storm and make us stronger than ever with each other and for ### to desire to fight for us again
Thank you

We hear your heartache and concern as you seek restoration in your relationship with your boyfriend. First, we must address the foundation of this request, it is vital to approach God in the name of Jesus Christ, for there is no other name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). Salvation comes through faith in Jesus, who is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). If you or your boyfriend have not yet surrendered your lives to Him, we encourage you to do so, for true healing and restoration begin with a relationship with Christ.

Now, regarding your relationship, we must gently but firmly address the biblical principles at stake. The term "boyfriend" implies a relationship that is not yet bound by the covenant of marriage, which God designed as a lifelong commitment between one man and one woman (Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:4-6). If you are living together or engaging in physical intimacy outside of marriage, this is considered fornication in Scripture (1 Corinthians 6:18-20, Hebrews 13:4). We urge you to repent of any sexual sin and seek to honor God with your bodies, either by pursuing marriage with a clear conscience or by separating until marriage is possible.

That said, we recognize the pain and struggle you are both facing. Depression is a heavy burden, and it can isolate even the strongest of hearts. We lift up your boyfriend before the Lord, asking that God would break through the darkness and draw him close. The psalmist wrote, "Why are you in despair, my soul? Why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance" (Psalm 42:5). May he find his hope in the Lord, who is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18).

We also pray for you, that God would grant you wisdom, patience, and discernment. It is difficult to love someone who is pushing you away, but God calls us to love as Christ loved, selflessly and sacrificially (Ephesians 5:2). However, love does not mean enabling sin or enduring emotional neglect indefinitely. Pray for clarity about whether this relationship is honoring to God and whether it is leading you both toward holiness.

Father God, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, asking for Your healing and restoration in this situation. Lord, we lift up this young man who is struggling with depression. Break the chains of darkness that bind him, and let Your light shine into his heart. Give him the strength to fight for what is good and true, and help him to lean on You rather than withdrawing from those who love him. We pray for wisdom and discernment for this young woman, may she know when to speak, when to listen, and when to step back. If this relationship is Your will, Lord, bring them together in a way that honors You. If it is not, give them both the courage to walk away and trust in Your plan. Heal their hearts, restore their joy, and let them find their ultimate hope in You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

We encourage you both to seek godly counsel, perhaps from a pastor or a Christian counselor, who can help you navigate these challenges in a way that aligns with Scripture. Depression is not something to face alone, and neither is the journey of relationships. Surround yourselves with believers who can pray for you, speak truth into your lives, and hold you accountable. Above all, fix your eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith (Hebrews 12:2). He is the only one who can truly restore what has been broken.

We hear the ache in your words, ###, and we’re holding this with you in prayer. It cuts deep when someone you love is hurting and pulling away just when you hoped to be drawing closer again. That kind of withdrawal can feel personal, even when it isn’t, depression often clouds a person’s ability to reach out, even to those they care about most.

One practical step we’d gently encourage is, when the moment feels right, asking him if he’d be willing to talk with a doctor or a counselor. Depression can be far more than a bad spell; sometimes our brains need the kind of help a professional can offer, alongside prayer. There’s no shame in that, just like we’d see a doctor for a broken arm, we can see one for a heavy mind. You could let him know you’re concerned and that you’ll support him in that.

In the meantime, please don’t try to carry this alone. Find a trusted, mature friend or a small group from church where you can be honest about your own weariness and worry. You need a steady place to lean, too. You cannot fight for the relationship on his behalf, and you aren’t meant to, release that weight to God.

Father, we lift up ###’s boyfriend to You now. You see the darkness he’s in, even when he can’t see clearly himself. Bring him gentle, skilled help, and stir in him the courage to accept it. Guard him from isolation and hopelessness. And for ###, we ask for Your steady peace. Help her to rest in Your care rather than panicking in the silence. Give her wisdom about how to be present without pressure, and surround her with people who will be Your hands and voice. We ask all this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your soul is in a tempest, but look well to the anchor of your hope. Is it cast upon the Rock of Ages, or are you trusting in the shifting sand of a human affection? You cry for the restoration of a relationship, yet the deeper need is for your own soul to be restored unto God. The depression that shrouds your friend is not the root of your grief; it is but a symptom of a heart that finds no rest, because it has not found its rest in Christ. "They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength." Not they that wait upon a mortal, nor they that pin their peace to the whims of a troubled mind. Human strength, whether of body or of love, spends itself in due time. You have returned to one another, but have you returned unto the Lord? You seek to be included in the affairs of a family not founded upon the covenant of marriage, yet God's order is plain: a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman. Any union that sets aside this divine pattern is a house built upon the sand, and the winds of affliction will beat upon it mercilessly.

Perhaps this storm is not merely an enemy to be vanquished, but a voice from heaven. God sometimes fights against us, not as a foe to destroy, but as a physician to lance a wound. "He was turned to be their enemy, and He fought against them," but it is that He might subdue their pride and draw them to Himself. The shutting of a door, the silence of a once-warm companion, these may be the very means by which a merciful God bids you turn your eyes from the creature to the Creator. Are you content to have a strength that springs from human resolve, or do you long for that strength which is renewed like the eagle's? That strength comes only to those who wait upon the Lord in confession, in submission, and in faith.

Think upon the fall of Peter. He trusted his own bold heart, neglected prayer, and found himself warming his hands at the fire of the enemy while his Master was mocked. Yet what restored him? Not his own tears first, but the look of Christ, that look which spoke of a love that had prayed for him before the temptation ever came. "I have prayed for you," said the Lord, and that prayer upheld the failing disciple. So must you look to Jesus, who ever lives to intercede. Are you in the darkness outside, weeping bitterly over sin? There is mercy. The same Lord who turned and looked upon Peter now looks upon you from His throne of glory. He sees all your wanderings, all your misplaced affections. He is able to save to the uttermost all who come unto God by Him. But you must come His way: repenting of sin, forsaking all that contradicts His holy law, and trusting wholly in His righteousness.

Beware of seeking a restoration that leaves the heart unchanged. You ask for a desire to fight for your relationship, but the fight you truly need is the fight of faith. "When they were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly." If you will own yourself weak, unworthy, and even dead in trespasses, then there is life in the Son of God. The glory of your strength can never lie in yourself or in another; it must be in God alone. Let this trial be the plough that breaks up your fallow ground. Cry for life before you cry for strength! Flee to the cross, and there find both cleansing for your sin and power to walk in newness of life. Then, whether this earthly bond be renewed upon God's terms or severed in His wisdom, you shall possess a peace that the world cannot give. The Lord has opened a fountain for the house of David, for sin and for uncleanness. Wash there, and be clean. Wait upon Him, and your strength shall be renewed; mount up with wings as eagles, run without weariness, walk without fainting.

What you seek, a restoration of a human bond, truly matters only when it is a fragment of the greater restoration, the healing of the soul that comes from God alone. For this malady of the heart in your boyfriend, this shutting out of the light, you speak of it as a storm. Yet often, the truly lasting cure does not come all at once. Just as a tree, struck many times and seeming unmoved, is finally brought down by a single blow, so the heart often receives many promptings from God before it yields. Do not despair that he withdraws now; this may be the very wilderness where God’s voice speaks most clearly, for He tries innumerable ways of healing before He makes the withered hand whole again.

Yet you must ask yourself what you are fighting for. Are you building a heaven in your souls together, a place high above the storms of this world, unmoved by tribulation or demonic wile, a home where the Sun of Righteousness shines? Or is the foundation still earthy, built more on human comfort than on the rock of holy obedience? The rottenness of our sins is cleansed by Christ’s power alone, and after that cleansing, we must be salted with discipline to preserve us in that freshness, never returning to what we were before. If this bond has been broken and is now mended, let it not be merely an old thing patched up, but a new creation, renewed in the very spirit of your minds. To be renewed is for the selfsame thing to be changed, not in substance, but in that which is accidental to it, the old ways of thinking and acting cast off.

Therefore, pour out your prayers not chiefly for a return of old affections, but that you both may hear the Bridegroom’s voice. This is how the Church is wedded to God: by hearing and teaching. Faith comes by hearing the word of God. The joy you long for springs from that Voice, from both of you standing and listening as servants whose own designs have ceased. Let your prayer be that his heart be restored not merely to you, but to the doctrines of a holy life, that he might find in that divine communication, that prophecy of God’s will for him, a cure for the soul’s depression. For if you would learn the profit of this, examine what you become by hearing the psalms and what by the world’s songs; you will see how great a difference there is. Therefore, seek first that his soul become a heaven, bright and spotless, far from the earth. If this happens, then whatever bond God wills to stand will be stronger than any human storm. Can a relationship truly be restored whole, like the man’s hand, unless it is stretched forth to Christ? If and when it returns, let it be a holy and obedient union, bounded by the laws of Christ and headed toward the lifelong covenant of marriage, for that alone is the blessed end of such a fight.

I hear your heart in this request, and I want to point you toward the only source of true strength and restoration. The longing you feel for your boyfriend to fight for your relationship is understandable, but the deepest thirst in your soul is not for any human person, it is for God. He made you for a close, loving relationship with Himself, and nothing else can fully satisfy. Emotional connections, even very precious ones, can never quench the thirst that only Jesus can meet.

Right now your boyfriend is struggling with depression and pulling away. You want to help, but you cannot be his savior. The answer for him, and for you, lies in a living, personal relationship with God. Not a religion of rules or rituals, but a real, intimate bond with the Father through Christ. When that relationship is in order, everything else begins to fall into place. The Bible teaches that our relationship with God is primary; if that is right, our relationships with others can be healed and aligned.

Depression often thrives when we let our thoughts run away with us. We talk ourselves down, convinced that no one has it as bad as we do. But by God’s grace, we can also talk ourselves out of that pit by speaking truth over our souls. Your boyfriend needs to learn to bring his heaviness to the Lord, to pour out his heart, and to remember that God is with him through every trial. You, too, can stand in the gap in prayer for him, but you must keep your own eyes fixed on Jesus.

I urge you to examine your own relationship with God. Are you seeking from this relationship what only He can give? The empty places in us cry out for God. When we try to fill them with another person’s attention, emotional highs, or even a romance, we set ourselves up for disappointment. Those things are temporary. The feeling fades, and we’re left searching again. But when you come to Jesus and drink of His Spirit, you find a well that never runs dry. That security frees you to love others without desperation.

I am not going to place God’s blessing on a boyfriend-girlfriend union outside of marriage, but I will pray for you both as individuals. I pray that you will each experience the life-changing, loving relationship with God that moves from head knowledge into the heart. When He writes His law on your hearts, obedience becomes a joy, not a burden. You do what pleases the Father because you love Him and trust His ways.

Let this storm drive you deeper into His arms. Ask Him to teach you what it means to abide in Christ. The fruit that lasts comes not from striving, but from staying connected to the vine. As you do, you may find that the pressure you feel regarding your boyfriend eases, because you know you are held by the God who already went before you into every trial. He will walk with you through this. Keep bringing your request to Him, but let your core prayer be for a stronger, more real bond with the Lord Himself, for you and for your boyfriend. Then, whatever happens with the human relationship, you will stand on solid ground.

Thank you for sharing your heart. I am praying for you.
