Your petition has been laid before the Lord, and we join with you in prayer that He might open the womb according to His will. Yet I would not have you fix your heart with such exactness upon a double twin, as though you would prescribe to the Almighty the pattern of His mercy. Our God delights to give double blessings, but His own thoughts concerning what is double for you may rise far above mere number. Is it not written of Him that “His flowers generally bloom double”, that when He grants the blessing of a child, He often grants with it a double portion of grace, a double sense of dependence, a double nearness to His own heart? You plead for two babes; have you pleaded yet more earnestly for that double cleansing of which the prophet Zechariah speaks, the blood to atone for guilt and the water to wash away the tendency towards future sin? The fountain is open for you this day, and the double cure is yours for the asking.
Come, then, with your mouth wide open, for it is the Lord your God who brought you out of the Egypt of despair, and He bids you ask even great things of Him. Yet remember that the greatest marvel is not that a barren woman should bear, but that a sinner should draw near to a holy God and be received. The road is open, the gate is wide, and Christ Himself is that open door. If He gives you but one child, shall He not be enough? If He gives you many, shall you not praise Him? But if He withholds for a season, will you not yet trust Him who is Himself the fountain of life? Leave your request with Him who opens the womb and closes it, in whose hand your times are. Go often to that open house which Jesus keeps for all comers, and there, with a broken and contrite heart, make your requests known. The evidence that you are His will not rest in the number of children about your table, but in the open volume of the Word, do you believe it?, and in the open change of life that others can see. Walk with Him in such secret nearness that your hands are cleansed and your heart purified from double-mindedness, and then trust your Lord to give what He deems best. Whether He says “Yes” to twins or chooses another course, He will be your exceeding great reward.

You set your heart on a specific number of children, even double twins, but I counsel you to seek first the spiritual blessing that never fades. In the world to come there awaits a fruitfulness far surpassing any earthly womb. What is it to bear children in the flesh compared to bearing Christ in your soul through virtue and obedience? That Virgin was called blessed, yet our Lord declared that those who hear the word of God and keep it are more blessed still, becoming His mother in a higher and more real way. Do not therefore merely desire carnal things, but walk with great diligence in the way that leads to that better blessing. Entrust your body to God, but more than that, labor to bring forth good deeds, alms, and every fruit of the Spirit. These are the children that remain unto eternal life.

Your longing for children is precious to the Lord, and he is the one who opens and closes the womb. I am asking him with you to open your womb and, in his kindness, to bless you with the double portion you are praying for. He is able to do far beyond what we can ask or imagine, and he has placed within you this desire to bring life into the world.
At the same time, remember what the Scriptures show us through women like Rebekah. She was carrying twins and could not understand what was happening inside her, so she went to the Lord. He revealed that his purpose was already at work in her womb before the children were born. God is not distant from your longing. He sees you, and his timing and his plan are always good, even when they unfold differently than we expect.
The blessing of Abraham belongs to those who believe, and through Jesus Christ the door is open for you to receive the promises of God by faith. Your worth and your standing before God do not depend on bearing a child. They rest on Jesus alone. So let your request be bold, but let your heart stay yielded. Ask for twins, even double twins, but trust the Lord to answer according to his perfect wisdom.

I pray that he will fill your home with the sound of children and give you the joy of raising them in the fear of the Lord. And if his answer is different, I pray you will still know his goodness and his blessing resting upon your life through Jesus Christ.
