It is a blessed thing when a soul, tossed on the waves of this present life, looks away from self and lays hold upon the Lord’s guidance. The cry of your heart has reached the ears of the unchanging Father, and He who numbers the very hairs of your head is not unmindful of your every need. Yet let this truth settle deep within you: the sheep of Christ’s pasture are sent into the world even as He was sent by the Father, not to carve out a path of their own liking, but to do the will of Him that called them. Whether in this land or across the seas, your first business is to serve Christ, your second business is still to serve Christ, and until that is your settled joy, all the geography of earth will not bring you peace.
You ask for direction to Australia. If it be your Father’s will to plant you there, He who made a way through the sea for Israel shall make a way through all obstacles for you. But be not hasty, for haste is the mother of many a mischief. Wait upon the Lord with a weaned heart, saying, “Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Thy sight.” The path of true wisdom is not marked by pushing open doors with anxious hands, but by bowing with quiet submission, trusting that He who guided David from the sheepfolds will guide you in every step. Put your daughter into the faithful care of the orphan’s Father; He is better to her than you could ever be to your own child. He who stood bound in our stead has freed His people from every chain, and no earthly distance can separate His own from His covenant love.
As to the friend whose face you see only through a mist of silence, I charge you to let no earthly affection dethrone the lordship of Christ over your spirit. If this man be washed in the blood of the Lamb, and if it be written in the book of the divine decree that you two should be yoked together for the building up of a home where Christ is the cornerstone, then the Lord who did restore the soul of his servant David can restore communication in a way that leaves no room for boast save in His own faithfulness. But if not, you shall find Christ’s grace sufficient to make you more than content without a creature’s love. Our Lord Jesus Christ is all, ordinary bread for daily hunger and fat things full of marrow for a feast. Seek restored fellowship with Him first; that is the one thing a father in grace knows with a depth passing knowledge.
Look well, then, to the Physician of souls. As you lay hold upon Him just as you are, you shall find that He restores perfectly and at once; for Christ is not only the Physician, but the Medicine, too. Whatever may be amiss, whether the wound be loneliness, or a hope deferred, or a fear for the morrow, there is no case upon record of a sinner cast out who came to Him in truth. Bring your sins, your perplexities, your daughter’s future, and that tangled affection which yearning has woven around a distant heart, and lay them all upon the altar of His substitution. When Christ was bound, the captives went free. When He died, we live. In Him, the great Father has already blessed you with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places, and that blessing is infinitely safer than any visa or any letter from a human hand.
May the Spirit, then, work in you a holy patience that does not kick against the goads of providence. Dethrone self, which is ever the traitorous lord, and be loyal to Christ alone. If He would have you cross the ocean, He will speak silently into your ear as He did into the heart of our Master, and you will know what Christ Jesus would have you do. But if He bids you stay, you shall find a mission field at your own doorstep, for every believer is sent. Only be sure of this: the Father’s will, not thine, be done; and in that will, even when it seems to tear the flesh, there is peace that the world neither gives nor understands.
