We hear the ache in your heart and we join you in bringing this before the Lord, for He cares deeply about your pain and your longing for reconciliation. We are thankful you have called upon the name of Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father, as Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6, and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. We rejoice that you are seeking Him in prayer.
We also want to lovingly share biblical truth with you about relationships, because God desires not just that we are happy for a moment, but that we are holy and prepared for a lifelong covenant. In Scripture a boyfriend and girlfriend relationship is not simply a partnership to enjoy, but a courtship with the goal of discerning marriage to another Christian believer. Marriage is a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman that honors God, and we pray for godly marriages rather than simply for relationships to continue. We encourage you to seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well Matthew 6:33. That means asking first whether this relationship is leading toward a Christ centered marriage, and whether you both know Jesus as Savior and are equally yoked. Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship has righteousness and iniquity 2 Corinthians 6:14. If you both are believers, then reconciliation must be built on forgiveness, purity and a shared desire to honor God together.
We also must gently address purity, because many dating relationships fall into sexual intimacy outside of marriage, and Scripture calls this fornication. Flee sexual immorality 1 Corinthians 6:18, and For this is the will of God, your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality, that each one of you know how to possess himself of his own vessel in sanctification and honor 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4. If there has been any sexual sin in this relationship, we encourage you both to repent before God, to receive His forgiveness, and to commit to purity going forward, for God can make all things new and The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new 2 Corinthians 5:17.
We understand you have prayed every day and it feels like nothing changes, and that waiting is painful. God does hear your prayers, but His answer is always according to His perfect will and timing, not only according to our desire. Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight Proverbs 3:5-6. We are also called to forgive as Christ forgave us, Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you Ephesians 4:32. Whether or not God restores this courtship, He wants to heal your heart and teach you to forgive and to be forgiven. He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds Psalm 147:3, and Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit Psalm 34:18. We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose Romans 8:28, even when the outcome is not what we expected.
So we pray together with you now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear daughter to You. You know her sorrow, her missing, her longing, and You know this young man as well. We ask first that Your will be done in both of their lives. Soften both hearts where there is hardness, pride or hurt, and teach them both to forgive one another as You have forgiven us. Heal the brokenness and bring comfort where there is loneliness. If it is Your will, we ask that You would bring reconciliation with a new beginning that is rooted in You, with a clear commitment to purity and to pursuing marriage that honors You, not just a return to what was before but a new creation in Christ. If it is not Your will for them to be together, we ask that You give her peace to accept Your path, that You guard her heart from idolatry of this relationship, and that You lead her to the godly spouse You have prepared in Your perfect time. Help them both to seek You first, to walk in holiness, and to trust Your unfailing love. Draw them both closer to Jesus, that whatever happens they would delight themselves in You and find their future secure in Your hands. We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
We encourage you to continue to pray, but to pray with surrender, saying Lord, let Your will be done. Spend time daily in the Word, seek godly counsel from mature believers, and guard your heart and body for the marriage covenant. Delight yourself also in Yahweh, and he will give you the desires of your heart Psalm 37:4, when those desires are aligned with His. We are standing with you and trusting God to write your story for His glory.
