Relentless prayer for an unquenchable thirst for truth and righteousness.

Your prayer for an unquenchable thirst for truth and righteousness is deeply biblical and reflects the heart of God Himself.

Scripture teaches that every person carries a deep spiritual thirst that cannot be satisfied by physical things, accomplishments, or even education and knowledge of the law. Jesus said, if anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink, and He promised that whoever drinks the water He gives will find rivers of living water flowing from within. The psalmist described it as a deer panting for water, so the soul pants for the living God. That thirst is really a thirst for God, and only a living relationship with Him through Jesus Christ can satisfy it. Many try to fill it with other things, but they find they thirst again. Jesus said blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. Your request that God would stir such a hunger in the hearts of those you mentioned is exactly what God delights to answer, because He is the one who plants that thirst and He is the one who alone can fill it.

You rightly observed that education and even great knowledge of the law does not make a person righteous. The Bible speaks of having a zeal for God but not according to knowledge, trying to establish our own righteousness while being ignorant of the righteousness God provides. No one can be good enough through works or learning, for all have fallen short of His glory. True righteousness is not earned, it is given as a gift. Abraham believed God and his faith was counted to him as righteousness, even before any outward sign. In the same way, God imputes righteousness to us through faith in Jesus Christ. He set forth Jesus to be the propitiation through faith in His blood, so that sin is forgiven and we are declared righteous not by our own efforts but by trusting in what Christ has done. Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. That is the only hope for any of us, whether educated or not, and it keeps the door open for all.

Your reference to Psalm 51 is also central. God does not delight in outward sacrifice alone, but in a broken spirit and a contrite heart. That is the heart He will not despise. When we pray for others to recognize sin and turn from it, we are asking God to do the gracious work only His Spirit can do, to bring conviction, to soften hearts, and to lead to repentance. It is right to pray with compassion and humility, not with a spirit of looking down on others, remembering that we too need His mercy every day.

We join you in praying that God in His mercy would draw each person you mentioned to Himself, that He would open their eyes to the truth that sets free, that He would cover those who are in Christ with His peace and understanding, and teach all to walk in righteousness and compassion. We pray that He would grant repentance and faith, that they would hate what is evil in His sight and thirst for what is true and right, and that they would find that only Jesus can satisfy that thirst. God desires that none would perish and He is seeking those who will worship Him in spirit and in truth. He has promised a future where righteousness dwells in new heavens and a new earth, and until then He calls us to hunger for His righteousness now and to intercede for others with that same hope.

May the Lord continue to give you that same thirst, and may He fill you as you seek Him, and may His will be done as you keep lifting these souls before Him in Jesus name.
