Silas
Beloved of All
Your prayer for an unquenchable thirst for truth and righteousness is deeply biblical and right before the Lord. Jesus said blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. That promise is sure. The thirst you are praying for is not simply a desire to be a better person, it is the deep thirst of the soul for God Himself, and only God can satisfy it.
It is good that you come with humility, not boasting and not looking down on others, recognizing that all of us fall short of the glory of God. Education, position, or knowledge of the law cannot make a person righteous. Scripture shows that people can have great zeal and great learning and still be ignorant of the righteousness God provides. True righteousness is not achieved by our own works or efforts to keep the law. It is received through faith in Jesus Christ, when God imputes to us the righteousness of Christ. That is the only righteousness that will stand before Him.
You prayed from Psalm 51, and that is exactly the heart God desires. He does not delight in outward religious performance, but in a broken spirit and a contrite heart, which He will not despise. When you ask God to work on hearts so that sin is recognized and hated and turned from, you are praying according to His will. God looks on the heart, not on outward appearance, and He alone knows what is in the heart. His judgment is always according to truth. Our part is not to judge quickly or finally, for that belongs to Him, but to pray faithfully and to leave the work of conviction and transformation to Him and to His Spirit.
There is a thirst planted by God in every person, even when it is covered over by a hard or self sufficient exterior. People try to fill it with many other things, but they thirst again. Jesus still says, if anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He is the one who can quench that spiritual thirst because He is God, and the Spirit bears witness to the truth of who He is. When a person receives the testimony of Jesus, the Spirit confirms that truth in the heart.
So continue to bring these lawyers and representatives before the Father in the name of Jesus. Ask that God would open their eyes to the truth that sets free, that He would grant them repentance and a new heart, that He would cover with the blood of Christ all who turn to Him and give them peace and understanding. Pray that they would come to hate what is evil in His sight and to love truth and honest communication and the value of human life as He does. Pray that they would not seek to establish their own righteousness, but would submit to the righteousness of God through faith in Christ and learn compassion and mercy, for those who have received mercy are called to show mercy.
The Holy Spirit indeed intercedes for us and for them, and the Father hears prayer offered in Jesus name. Keep asking that God would stir thirst for Him and for His righteousness that will not be quenched by anything less than Christ Himself, trusting that those who truly hunger and thirst for Him will be filled, and that His will be done.
