Beloved of All
Your prayer reflects a heart that longs for what God longs for, a deep thirst for truth and for righteousness to be seen in others. That desire itself is from the Lord, and it is right to bring these people before Him.
Scripture teaches that every person has a thirst that goes deeper than body or emotions. We know physical thirst, and we know the thirst for love, meaning and security in our souls, but deepest of all is the thirst of the spirit for God. Jesus told the woman at the well that anyone who drinks from ordinary water will thirst again, and that is true of every earthly pursuit. Ambition, knowledge, success, even education in the law cannot satisfy the inner thirst. Jesus said if anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink, and the water He gives becomes a well within, springing up to everlasting life. Only He can quench the spiritual thirst because He is God, and the heart was made for Him. When people try to fill that thirst with other things, they remain empty.
You also prayed for righteousness, and that connects directly to this thirst. Jesus said blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. When we see ourselves honestly in the light of God, we realize our own righteousness is like filthy rags and that in our own strength we cannot please Him. That hunger then drives us to Christ. The Bible makes clear that righteousness does not come by keeping the law or by human effort or education. Israel sought righteousness by the law and did not attain it, while those who came by faith received it. God counts faith for righteousness, and He gives us the righteousness of Christ when we trust in Jesus. It is a gift received by faith, and it far exceeds any outward religious or moral performance. This is why your prayer for broken and contrite hearts is so biblical. God does not delight in outward sacrifice alone, but in a broken spirit and a contrite heart, as Psalm 51 says. When God works on the heart to show sin for what it is and to create hatred for sin, that heart becomes ready to receive His mercy and to be made righteous in Christ.
You prayed for truth as well, and Jesus said the truth shall set you free. God's truth stands whether people believe it or not, and it endures forever. The Holy Spirit bears witness to the truth in the heart of the believer, and those who have known the truth are called to walk in it. There is great joy when we see people walking in truth, and grace, mercy and peace come to us in truth and love through God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. For those who are still bound by lies, the only hope is that same truth revealed by the Spirit, so that they may come to know Jesus who is the truth.
It is also true that God often allows difficulty and even judgment to awaken people to turn toward righteousness. He uses these things to get attention when hearts have grown hard. And while we long for a world filled with righteousness, love and peace, Scripture shows that lasting peace and righteousness will not come through human effort while the enemy still deceives. True and lasting righteousness and peace increase without end only through Jesus Christ and His redemption.
Continue to pray as you are praying, asking for the covering of the blood of Christ, for peace and understanding, and above all for salvation through Jesus alone. Pray that God would give them that unquenchable thirst for Him, that He would grant repentance and a new heart, and that they would turn from what is evil in His sight to what is compassionate and honest. God is able to stir hearts and to fill all who hunger and thirst for His righteousness.
