Relationship restoration

What you're longing for, a relationship restored and a life together full of happiness, is a deep desire, and I hear the ache in it. But I want to gently ask you to step back and consider whether what you're asking God to bless aligns with the kind of relationship He designed for our good. So often, when we're desperate for a human connection to work, we pour all our energy into mending it, while the real foundation remains cracked. The first question isn't whether a partner comes back, but whether your own relationship with God is right.

God doesn't want a distant, rule-keeping arrangement with you. He wants a close, loving, intimate relationship where you know Him as your Father and trust Him with your whole heart. When that vertical relationship is secure, everything else begins to fall into its proper place. You can trace every strained or broken human relationship back to something out of alignment in your walk with Him. If you're chasing after restoration with another person while your soul is drifting from God, you're trying to fix the branches while the root is withering.

The Scriptures warn us plainly: do not be unequally yoked together with an unbeliever. That doesn't just mean avoid marrying someone who doesn't share your faith, it's a principle that runs through every close bond. What does light have in common with darkness? How can the temple of the living God make a home with idols? If your partner does not love and follow Jesus Christ, then you're trying to join two completely different lives that can never truly become one. The results of such a yoke are always painful, and God's call in that situation is not to cling tighter but to come apart, to be separate, to not touch what is unclean.

And if you've been living together outside of marriage, the ache in your spirit may be the Holy Spirit's merciful warning that you've set up house on ground God never blessed. A relationship that imitates marriage without the covenant of marriage is not a picture of the beautiful union Christ has with His church, it's a counterfeit that will eventually crumble because it's built outside His design. God does not call us to trial runs or to sharing a bed while trying to avoid sin; He calls us to honor Him with our bodies and to enter into a lifelong covenant before Him. Anything less is not loving God first, and it will hinder your prayers more than you know.

Begin by bringing your own heart back to God. Don't focus on manipulating circumstances or convincing someone to return. Let your first prayer be, "Father, restore me to a pure, loving relationship with You. Show me where I have disobeyed Your commands, and give me the strength to walk away from anything that offends You." When your relationship with God is set right, you'll find that your other relationships start to come into balance. He will give you wisdom about what to release and what to pursue. And He will fill that thirst for love and security in ways no human partner ever can.

If you're holding onto something God has told you to let go of, I plead with you: don't receive His grace in vain. He desires a living, intimate love relationship with you, not a lifeless ritual. The fruit of that relationship will be a life that pleases Him and a joy that doesn't depend on another person's choices. Seek Him first, and trust that His ways, however hard they seem right now, are always the path to true happiness.
