Rekindling of a friendship

Anonymous

Beloved of All
Please pray for me and my friend to be cool again. A recent friendship that was very valuable to me got awkward, and I haven't had a chance to talk with them about it (to make it right if something happened). I mean, I have an idea why. they ay or may not have figured out that I like them as more than a friend, but I am not going to do anything about it so like I hope they get over that. I've prayed about them and imagined i'd someday tell them about Jesus so I hope it's not God keeping us apart. We had a couple serious/vulnerable conversations so them ignoring me feels like a betrayal to me. Unless I'm just overthinking the whole thing, I don't know. I'm really hurt by it. Please pray for me :)

We hear your heart in this and we join you in bringing this hurt and confusion before the Lord, for we know how painful it is when a valuable friendship suddenly feels awkward and distant. We understand the ache you feel when vulnerable conversations you treasured seem to be met now with silence, and how easy it is to feel betrayed and to overthink every detail. We want to walk with you in prayer and in truth.

We see you are carrying unspoken feelings for this friend, hoping they will simply get over sensing that you like them as more than a friend while you choose to do nothing about it. We gently encourage you to bring those feelings fully into the light before God. If this is a friendship with someone of the opposite sex who is a fellow believer, then Scripture shows us that romantic interest is not to be hidden or suppressed in awkwardness, but to be handled with honor and purity with marriage as the goal, for courtship should be intentional toward a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman as God designed in Genesis 2:24. If this friend is not a believer, we urge you to remember 2 Corinthians 6:14 that we should not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, and your first and highest calling toward them is to share Christ, not to pursue romance. And if these feelings are toward someone of the same sex, we must lovingly speak the truth that God has reserved romantic and sexual love for marriage between a man and a woman, and any same sex desire, which Scripture calls homosexuality, is to be surrendered to Christ and not acted upon, as we are called to walk in purity. In any of these cases, hoping the other person will just get over it without honest, kind communication can leave confusion and hurt on both sides. Love is to be sincere and without manipulation, and we are called to let our yes be yes and our no be no.

We also hear you wondering if God might be keeping you apart and feeling hurt as if you have been betrayed. We encourage you not to let that hurt harden into bitterness, for Ephesians 4:32 calls us to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. Proverbs 17:17 reminds us that a friend loves at all times, and yet even the closest friendships need grace and clear communication. If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men Romans 12:18. That may mean humbly seeking a calm, honest conversation when the Lord opens the door, as Matthew 18:15 teaches us to go and show our brother his fault between us alone if we feel wronged, not to accuse but to understand and to make things right. At the same time, we must not be anxious, for Philippians 4:6-7 tells us in nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Your desire to one day tell this friend about Jesus is beautiful, and we pray you will keep that as your primary motive, not just to preserve the friendship but because you truly long for their salvation, speaking with grace seasoned with salt Colossians 4:6.

We do not know if you are overthinking, but we know God sees your heart and He is not confused. Whether He restores this friendship closely or allows distance for a season for your good and His glory, we can trust His perfect wisdom and timing, and we can ask Him to keep your heart pure and free from resentment.

We pray together now for you.

Father, we lift this dear one to You in the name of Jesus, thanking You that You see every tear and every anxious thought. We ask You to heal the hurt of feeling ignored and betrayed, to guard this heart with Your peace that surpasses understanding, and to remove any bitterness or overthinking. Lord, give wisdom and clarity about these romantic feelings, help this one to surrender them fully to You and to walk in purity and honesty according to Your design for marriage between a man and a woman. If it is Your will, open a door for a humble, grace-filled conversation to bring understanding and reconciliation, and help both friends to forgive and to speak the truth in love. Above all, we pray for opportunity to share the gospel with this friend, that Your name would be glorified whether this friendship is rekindled or not. Draw this dear one closer to You, deepen their trust in Your goodness, and let them know they are fully loved and never forsaken by You. We ask all this in the precious name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and our access to You, amen.

We've been thinking about your request and how heavy this feels. When you have had those honest, vulnerable talks with someone and then suddenly get silence, it can hurt in a way that feels personal, like a betrayal, even when you are not sure what happened. It makes sense you are replaying it and wondering if you are overthinking.

It sounds like you care about this person both as a friend and as someone you hoped to encourage in faith, and you are trying to handle your own feelings for them with care by not putting pressure on the friendship. That restraint is kind and respectful.

Friendships often deepen because we let each other in a little at a time, and they also need space and clear, gentle communication when things feel awkward. Silence is hard to read, and we often fill it with the worst explanation, when the other person may simply feel unsure how to respond.

If you do have a chance to talk, one simple next step could be a brief, low pressure note in your own words. You could thank them for the friendship, name that things have felt distant lately, say you value them and there is no pressure to talk right away, and leave the door open if they want to. Keeping it short and kind gives them room without demanding an answer.

We are praying for you in this lonely stretch.

Father, we bring our friend to You and ask for comfort for the hurt and clarity for next steps. Give peace in the waiting, wisdom for words if a conversation opens, and faithful friends around them in this season. Keep drawing them close to You. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your sorrow in this awkward distance has been heard, and it is right to bring it before the Lord who delights in love and in peace. To feel hurt when a valuable friendship grows cold, and to feel the sting as though it were a betrayal after serious and vulnerable conversation, is a tender wound. And to be left wondering whether you have caused it, whether you are overthinking it, or whether the other has perceived more than you intended to show, only deepens that ache.

There is a Friend who sticks closer than a brother, whose love is not fitful but abiding. Our love too often grows cold, but His love abounds and remains constant notwithstanding all our provocations and infirmities. He knows what it is to be misunderstood and forsaken, and He will not ignore the cry of a wounded heart. Come and dwell upon His love, for He first loved us, and from that fountain your own love may be recruited and set in order. When the heart is full of Christ, it learns to love others well, without demanding from them what only Christ can give.

You have done wisely to resolve not to act upon a tender affection that is not to be pursued, but to commit it to the Lord. True friendship is a reciprocal thing, built upon mutual love, delight and harmony of thought, and it is preserved by purity and honesty. If affection has outrun friendship, bring that affection under the hand of Christ and ask Him to govern it. He makes the most of us, and He teaches us to love as He loves, with a practical, active love that seeks the good of the other. Let your aim be a friendship that is chaste, honorable and self controlled, belonging to that holiness which befits those who are friends of Jesus. If the Lord should in His providence lead to marriage, it is His good gift as the lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and all that belongs to it is kept within that covenant. Apart from that, love is to be expressed in faithful, brotherly kindness that seeks no more than Christ allows.

The God of peace has prepared everything necessary for reconciliation, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation because we have tasted it ourselves. He delights not in estrangement but in peace. Therefore we may pray for a door to be opened for a calm and humble conversation, if it be His will, that what is awkward may be spoken of plainly and kindly, and that misunderstandings may be cleared. And if that door does not open at once, we may trust that He who is the great Friend and Guide of His people will order even this distance for good, and will keep you from bitterness while He works.

Your desire to tell your friend of Jesus is a precious burden. Do not let the enemy persuade you that this trial means God is against you. Rather ask the Lord to make you ready, by a life of quiet love and truth, to speak of the salvation that is in Christ alone, for there is no other name by which we must be saved. Whether friendship is restored fully or not, that hope for their soul is the greatest love you can show.

We will pray for you to this end.

We pray that the Lord Jesus, who is your unfailing Friend, would comfort your hurt and quiet your anxious thoughts, and teach you to joy in His love as He joys in you. We pray He would order your affections under His lordship, keep your heart pure, and give you wisdom and meekness for any future conversation. We pray that if it be according to His wisdom, He would restore coolness to kindness and make this friendship firm and lasting in holiness. And we pray He would give you opportunity, with grace and truth, to speak of His redeeming love, that your friend might come to know Him and be reconciled to God. May He keep you abiding in His love, and may your love for Him abound more and more, till it overflows to others for His glory. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your honesty about this hurt is heard, and it is understandable to feel wounded and confused when a valuable friendship becomes awkward and distant, especially after you shared vulnerable conversations together.

True friendship in Christ is precious, more to be desired than many other comforts, and Scripture calls it like a fortified city when brother aids brother. But such friendship is not formed by simply spending time together or sharing meals, which even those who do evil can do. It is formed upon godliness and a sincere love that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a faith that is not pretended. That kind of love abounds with knowledge and discernment, so that we learn to approve what is excellent and to remain sincere and without offense before God and before others.

Part of that discernment is learning to love with wisdom. You showed wisdom in deciding not to act on romantic feelings and not to press the other person. That restraint honors God, who calls us to purity and to reserve romantic and sexual love for the lifelong covenant of marriage between one man and one woman. To love your friend well now means to love them as a neighbor and, if they are not yet in Christ, as someone who needs the same salvation through Jesus Christ alone that we all need. It means not nurturing or celebrating desires that would lead away from that path, but instead hindering what leads away from God and helping one another toward what is profitable for the soul.

It is also right to examine what this friendship was built on and where it is going. If a friendship is built only on shared interests, long acquaintance, or enjoyment of each other's company, it will be fragile. If it is built on a desire to help one another know Christ and walk in holiness, it can endure change and even distance. This does not make the pain less real, but it gives you a way to pray with clarity.

You wondered if God is keeping you apart or if you are overthinking. God does not delight in needless hurt, but He does guide His children for their good and sometimes allows distance to protect purity, to bring clarity, or to teach us to love without demanding a particular outcome. The feeling of betrayal makes sense when vulnerability is not returned, yet try not to let that hurt harden into bitterness. Love still owes a debt to the other person, the debt to seek their true good, even while you give space and respect their choice to step back.

For now, the most loving steps are often quiet and steady. Pray for your own heart to be guarded and sincere. Ask God to help you abound in love with judgment and reason, not simply with feeling. Seek counsel from a mature believer or pastor who knows you, stay rooted in Scripture and in fellowship with other believers, and avoid putting yourself in situations that would stir romantic hope or pressure your friend. If God opens a natural and welcome opportunity to talk, you can speak briefly, humbly, and without demanding closeness, taking responsibility for any part you played and making clear that you respect boundaries. If that door does not open, you can still entrust both of you to the Lord.

We will pray for you and for your friend.

Father, we thank You for Your mercy shown to us in Christ, who took our nature in love to make reconciliation for our sins. We ask You to comfort this dear one in their hurt and to heal the sense of betrayal and confusion. Grant a pure heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith, and let love abound with knowledge and discernment to approve what is excellent. If it is Your will, restore this friendship on a foundation of godliness and make it profitable for both souls. If not, grant peace and contentment in Your will. Give wisdom to know when to speak and when to remain quiet, strength to walk in purity and self control, and courage to love without seeking to use the other person. Above all, we pray for the friend who does not yet know You, that You would draw them to salvation through Jesus Christ alone, and that You would give opportunity in Your timing to speak of Christ with grace and truth. Make both lives sincere and without offense until the day of Christ. In Jesus name, amen.
