Beloved Servant
I have been trying to reconcile some estranged relationships but it has been a very, very difficult process. In the past year, Christ has been working on me with my problems with unforgiveness and me trying to reconcile these relationships was part of that process. But for certain reasons, it doesn't seem that God actually wants me to be close to these people I'm trying to reconcile with and it even seems that He's leading me away from them in certain ways as I try to reach out. This process has been stressful and also exposed me to mental/emotional distress for certain reasons. Please pray with me that perhaps God would allow me to remain at a godly, kind distance from these people permanently and not have to seek any further relationship with them than that. Pray that He would make it where certain people would not try to force me to be in close relationships with these people. It's just been too hard. These are unsaved family. Again, I don't know why God had me reach out but I believe it was for a purpose. Still, I no longer want to seek close relationships with these people for my own protection. Thank you.

We hear the weight and weariness in your heart and we join with you in prayer over this very difficult and painful process of trying to reconcile estranged relationships. We thank God with you that Christ has been working on your heart regarding unforgiveness, for that is His gracious work in us and it is evidence of His love and sanctifying power. Be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you, Ephesians 4:32. And bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any, even as Christ forgave you, so you also do, Colossians 3:13.

We want to encourage you that forgiveness and reconciliation, while related, are not the same. God commands us to forgive from the heart as He has forgiven us, but reconciliation requires repentance, trust rebuilt, and mutual willingness to walk in peace. You have been obedient to reach out, and we believe God honors that obedience even when the outcome is not closeness. If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men, Romans 12:18. That verse reminds us that peace is our responsibility as far as it depends on us, but it also acknowledges that it is not always possible to be close or restored in the way we hoped, especially when the other persons remain unsaved and perhaps unrepentant.

We understand your desire to now remain at a godly, kind distance for your own protection, and we believe Scripture supports wise boundaries. Above all else, guard your heart, for out of it are the issues of life, Proverbs 4:23. And do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity, 2 Corinthians 6:14. This does not mean we do not love our unsaved family, we are called to love and pray for them, but it does mean we are not to be bound in a way that harms our walk with Christ or exposes us continually to emotional and spiritual harm. The Lord also calls us to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves, Matthew 10:16, and there are times He leads us to shake the dust from our feet and entrust people to Him when our witness has been given, Matthew 10:14.

We also hear that others may be trying to pressure you to be close again, and that this has brought mental and emotional distress. We pray the Lord will be your defender and your peace. We cast our anxieties on Him because He cares for us, 1 Peter 5:7, and we are told in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus, Philippians 4:6-7. God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self control, 2 Timothy 1:7. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit, Psalm 34:18.

We do not see that you need rebuke, for your heart seeks to honor God, but we gently affirm that seeking a kind distance is not unforgiveness. You can fully forgive and still love from a distance while you pray for their salvation. We encourage you to continue to pray for your unsaved family, for God desires all people to be saved and come to full knowledge of the truth, 1 Timothy 2:4, and He is patient, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance, 2 Peter 3:9. Your reaching out may have planted seeds that only eternity will reveal, and we know that to those who love God all things work together for good, Romans 8:28.

We pray together with you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, through whom alone we have access to Your throne of grace. We thank You for the work You have already done in this dear heart to bring forgiveness and obedience. Lord, You see the stress, the weariness, and the emotional pain this reconciliation process has caused. We ask that You grant wisdom generously, for You give to all liberally and without reproach, James 1:5. Make clear Your will regarding distance and boundaries, and confirm that a godly, kind distance is pleasing to You in this season for protection and for peace. We ask that You would soften the hearts of those who would pressure or force close relationship, and that You would establish healthy boundaries that are respected by all. Guard this heart and mind with Your perfect peace. Help our dear brother or sister to continue to love these unsaved family members with the love of Christ, to pray for their salvation, and to entrust them fully into Your hands, loving their enemies and praying for those who have caused distress, Matthew 5:44. Let no bitterness take root, but let forgiveness remain complete. Heal the mental and emotional wounds and restore strength and joy. We thank You that You are our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, Psalm 46:1. We entrust this whole matter to You and ask that You lead forward in a way that honors You and brings protection and peace. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray, amen.

We encourage you to remain steadfast in prayer for your family from that godly distance, to stay rooted in the Word and in fellowship with believers who can support you, and to trust that God will use your obedience for His glory even if closeness is not His plan. Keep your heart tender toward the Lord and firm in the boundaries He shows you.

We hear how much you have carried this past year as Christ has been working with you on unforgiveness, and how hard and confusing it has been to reach out and then sense He may be leading you not toward closeness but toward a quieter, kinder distance. It is understandable to feel worn down and to want protection for your heart after so much stress.

It can help to remember that releasing resentment and restoring a close relationship are not the same thing. You can choose before God to let go of bitterness and to want good for someone, while also recognizing that closeness requires mutual willingness, trust built over time, and safety. When those are not present, especially with family who do not share your faith, a respectful distance can be both loving and wise.

Since others pressing you to be closer has been part of the strain, one steady next step is to get clear for yourself what that godly distance looks like in practice, what kind of contact feels sustainable and what does not, and to have a simple, calm sentence ready to use when you feel pushed. Sharing that plan with one trusted pastor or mature friend can make it easier to hold it consistently and kindly.

If the emotional distress continues to weigh heavily, it can help to talk with a pastor or counselor in person alongside prayer.

Father, we lift our friend to You. Give wisdom to discern Your leading, peace in releasing what You are not asking them to carry, and protection for their heart and mind. Help them to remain kind without being pulled beyond what is healthy, and give them grace and support when others urge more. Guide their steps in Your will, in Jesus' name, amen.

Your honest sharing about this painful season has been received with care and prayer, and we join you in bringing these burdens before the Lord.

We thank God for the work He has done in your heart this past year concerning unforgiveness. Scripture teaches us that forgiveness is first a divine act, that there is forgiveness with God through Jesus Christ, and that it is a surprising, complete and eternal forgiveness. As Christ has forgiven us freely and fully, so we are called to forgive others from the heart, not because the debt was small, but because we have been forgiven so great a debt. To forgive as Christ forgave is not paltry but great minded, and it releases us from the bondage of bitterness even when reconciliation in close fellowship is not possible.

It is right to distinguish between a forgiving heart and a close relationship, especially with unsaved family. Forgiveness does not always mean restored closeness, and wisdom may indeed lead to a kind and godly distance for your protection and peace. The Lord knows the distress this process has brought, and He sees your desire to obey Him while guarding your heart from further harm.

We pray with you now:

Heavenly Father, we thank You that there is forgiveness with You through the blood of Your Son, and that You have forgiven Your people completely and eternally. We thank You for working in our brother or sister to release unforgiveness and to seek peace where possible. Lord, grant wisdom to discern Your leading in these estranged family relationships. If it is Your will, establish and protect a godly, kind distance that honors You and guards this heart from further mental and emotional distress. Prevent pressure from others to force a closeness that would be harmful, and give grace to respond with gentleness and firmness. Grant peace that passes understanding, and let this time be one of healing and steadiness in Christ. We also pray for these unsaved family members, that You would draw them to Yourself, that they might know the forgiveness that is found only in Jesus Christ, and that they might be saved. Lead all of us to walk in holiness, truth and love, forgiving as Christ has forgiven us, and resting in Your perfect will. In the name of Jesus our Redeemer we ask this, Amen.

May the Lord keep you in His peace, assure you of His complete forgiveness toward you in Christ, and give you daily grace to forgive and to walk in wisdom.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Father in heaven, thank you for the work you have done in this heart to turn away from unforgiveness and to seek peace. Thank you that through Jesus Christ alone you have reconciled us to yourself when we were far off and estranged. I ask that you would now grant wisdom and protection. Grant grace to forgive fully and to keep no record of wrongs, and to live at peace as far as it depends on this one. If it is your will, allow a settled, kind distance to be enough for this season, without bitterness and without guilt. Guard this child of yours from distress and give rest to a troubled mind. Give strength to stand gently but firmly when others may try to force a closeness that is not healthy, and give those family members and friends understanding and restraint. Above all, have mercy on unsaved family and draw them to salvation through Jesus Christ alone, that the deeper reconciliation with you might one day make other healing possible. Lead step by step, provide holy counsel and community nearby, and keep this heart close to you. In the name of Jesus, our Mediator, amen.
