We hear the weight and weariness in your heart and we join with you in prayer over this very difficult and painful process of trying to reconcile estranged relationships. We thank God with you that Christ has been working on your heart regarding unforgiveness, for that is His gracious work in us and it is evidence of His love and sanctifying power. Be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you, Ephesians 4:32. And bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any, even as Christ forgave you, so you also do, Colossians 3:13.
We want to encourage you that forgiveness and reconciliation, while related, are not the same. God commands us to forgive from the heart as He has forgiven us, but reconciliation requires repentance, trust rebuilt, and mutual willingness to walk in peace. You have been obedient to reach out, and we believe God honors that obedience even when the outcome is not closeness. If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men, Romans 12:18. That verse reminds us that peace is our responsibility as far as it depends on us, but it also acknowledges that it is not always possible to be close or restored in the way we hoped, especially when the other persons remain unsaved and perhaps unrepentant.
We understand your desire to now remain at a godly, kind distance for your own protection, and we believe Scripture supports wise boundaries. Above all else, guard your heart, for out of it are the issues of life, Proverbs 4:23. And do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity, 2 Corinthians 6:14. This does not mean we do not love our unsaved family, we are called to love and pray for them, but it does mean we are not to be bound in a way that harms our walk with Christ or exposes us continually to emotional and spiritual harm. The Lord also calls us to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves, Matthew 10:16, and there are times He leads us to shake the dust from our feet and entrust people to Him when our witness has been given, Matthew 10:14.
We also hear that others may be trying to pressure you to be close again, and that this has brought mental and emotional distress. We pray the Lord will be your defender and your peace. We cast our anxieties on Him because He cares for us, 1 Peter 5:7, and we are told in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus, Philippians 4:6-7. God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self control, 2 Timothy 1:7. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit, Psalm 34:18.
We do not see that you need rebuke, for your heart seeks to honor God, but we gently affirm that seeking a kind distance is not unforgiveness. You can fully forgive and still love from a distance while you pray for their salvation. We encourage you to continue to pray for your unsaved family, for God desires all people to be saved and come to full knowledge of the truth, 1 Timothy 2:4, and He is patient, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance, 2 Peter 3:9. Your reaching out may have planted seeds that only eternity will reveal, and we know that to those who love God all things work together for good, Romans 8:28.
We pray together with you now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, through whom alone we have access to Your throne of grace. We thank You for the work You have already done in this dear heart to bring forgiveness and obedience. Lord, You see the stress, the weariness, and the emotional pain this reconciliation process has caused. We ask that You grant wisdom generously, for You give to all liberally and without reproach, James 1:5. Make clear Your will regarding distance and boundaries, and confirm that a godly, kind distance is pleasing to You in this season for protection and for peace. We ask that You would soften the hearts of those who would pressure or force close relationship, and that You would establish healthy boundaries that are respected by all. Guard this heart and mind with Your perfect peace. Help our dear brother or sister to continue to love these unsaved family members with the love of Christ, to pray for their salvation, and to entrust them fully into Your hands, loving their enemies and praying for those who have caused distress, Matthew 5:44. Let no bitterness take root, but let forgiveness remain complete. Heal the mental and emotional wounds and restore strength and joy. We thank You that You are our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, Psalm 46:1. We entrust this whole matter to You and ask that You lead forward in a way that honors You and brings protection and peace. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray, amen.
We encourage you to remain steadfast in prayer for your family from that godly distance, to stay rooted in the Word and in fellowship with believers who can support you, and to trust that God will use your obedience for His glory even if closeness is not His plan. Keep your heart tender toward the Lord and firm in the boundaries He shows you.
