Reconciliation with boyfriend

I hear your anguish, and the confusion that tears at your heart. The enemy never despairs of our destruction, but we must never despair of God's mercy. You ask why God allowed this after two years, why He did not end it at the start. Perhaps this is exactly His answer, though it feels like a nightmare. God often waits, allowing a relationship to grow, so that when it ends, it drives you to seek Him more earnestly than ever before. Do not interpret the peace you felt as a divine guarantee that this man was your husband. Peace can come from God to sustain us through a season, but it does not obligate Him to fulfill our plans. The stronger the bond grew, the more it revealed what was in both your hearts. Now the turmoil has surfaced his confusion and your despair, and in this God is calling you to Himself, not away from Him.

You say you cannot eat, cannot sleep, and have lost weight. This is the moment to flee to the mountain with Christ, away from the noisy tumults of your grief. Seek solitude, not to brood, but to pray. Let the stillness be a place where you wrestle with God honestly. Pour out your complaint, but then listen. Do not demand that He soften your ex-boyfriend's heart as your first request; ask Him to soften your own heart first. For it is when we cling to another person with such desperation that we make an idol of them. God may be tearing that idol down so He alone becomes your portion. The chaos shows that your ex is not acting in a sane spiritual state, but you cannot fix him. You can only entrust him to God, who is able to bring even the most hardened soul to repentance.

I know you feel you cannot go on. Yet hear this: no one living in vice should despair, and no one in virtue should slumber. Your pain is not a sign that God has abandoned you but that He is working. Do not let the devil convince you that hope is lost. The enemy is wicked and never gives up, while we too easily despair of our own salvation and God's providence. You prayed at the start for God to end things if this man was not for you. Perhaps you imagined a quiet separation, but God in His wisdom allowed a jarring, inexplicable break to protect you from something far worse. That which seems like a false hope was an opportunity for you both to see if your love was rooted in Christ or merely in human affection. The answer is now clear: his heart was not firmly fixed on the Lord, and yours was too fixed on him.

Do not seek reconciliation at any cost. A relationship that is not built on mutual submission to Christ's commands will not be a testimony of His goodness; it will be a monument to human willfulness. Instead, pray for him truly: that he would encounter Christ in a fresh way, yes, but also for yourself. Pray, "Let me be healed first. Let me love You above all. And if it be Your will, in Your time, bring him back a changed man, but not before my heart finds its rest in You alone." When we approach God with open hands, not demands, He remembers not the past. He does not reproach you for the time spent in this relationship. Only cleave to Him earnestly now.

I urge you, for the sake of your soul, to seek counsel from a godly elder in your church. Obedience to those who watch over your soul is a safeguard against the confusion of evil thoughts. You are like a ship without a helmsman right now; let a faithful shepherd guide you. And do not neglect the Holy Sacraments, which are medicine for the wounded. The very fact that you are in this storm is proof that the contest is still on. The prize is still in suspense. Rise up, take the sword of the Spirit, and do not despair of yourself. You are not beyond God's love, nor is this situation beyond His power to redeem, whether that redemption means reconciliation or a far greater gift you cannot yet see. Cast your net again in faith, and expect that God will show you ripe fruit in due season.

The pain you are carrying right now is real, and the confusion cuts deep. When you prayed at the start, you were sincere, asking God to guard your heart and end things if this man was not the one. And then the relationship grew, and peace came. That felt like confirmation, so now the sudden breaking feels like betrayal, not just by him, but by God. You are asking, “Why give me hope and then let it shatter? Why not answer my prayer then instead of letting me walk two years further into this only to be devastated?” Those are honest questions, and they come from a place of deep hurt.

In moments like this, it is easy to slip into seeing our relationship with God through a legal lens: I did my part, I prayed the right prayer, I sought His will, so He owes me the outcome I expected. But the heart of the gospel is that God does not deal with us on the basis of a contract we can measure and hold Him to. He desires a loving relationship, one where we trust His character even when the path makes no sense to us. The covenant He has made with you through Jesus is not fragile like human promises. It is sustained by His own faithfulness, not your ability to read every circumstance perfectly. That does not erase the agony, but it repositions you: you are not abandoned, and your hope rests on something unshakeable.

The despair you feel right now, the inability to eat or sleep, the nightmare of it all, that is a form of what Scripture calls the cry of a broken spirit. And strangely, that is the place where God often does His deepest work. It is the point where we exhaust our own strength, where our own arms are broken, as it were, and we can no longer hold the sword. We realize we cannot fix this, we cannot change his heart, we cannot untangle the chaos. And that is terrifying, but it is also the threshold of discovering that real deliverance does not come from our frantic efforts. The Spirit is given to us not to make life easy, but to be our strength precisely when we have none. You do not need to deliver yourself from this miserable state. The same God who raised Jesus from the dead is able to bring life out of what feels like a grave.

You long for reconciliation, and it is not wrong to bring that desire before the Lord. He weeps with you over brokenness; His heart is not thundering in harsh judgment but grieving over the pain His children endure. Yet as you pour out your request for a softened heart and a restored relationship, consider also holding that desire with open hands. The truest hope is not that a particular human relationship will be put back together, but that God is doing something, even now, that you cannot fully see. He may be shielding you from a future harm, or He may be using this tearing to draw you into a deeper dependence on Him alone. The promise is that what He tears, He will heal; what He strikes, He will bind up. That healing may come in a way you do not expect, but it will come.

Right now, the confusion feels like a thick darkness, but the hope you have in Christ is not based on your understanding of this moment. It is anchored in the reality that one day every wrong will be made right, and in the meantime, He sustains you. This heartbreak is not the end of the story. The Lamb overcomes, and He will cause new life to bud from places that now seem barren. Let yourself grieve, but do not let the grief convince you that God has broken His word. He is writing His law on your heart through this valley, teaching you that you are His beloved child, held fast by a love that does not fail. You can go on, not because you are strong, but because He gently carries you and will show you, step by step, what it means to trust His loving purpose when all other lights go out.

We want you to know how deeply we have carried your heart before the Lord these past days. Your pain has not been overlooked, and your cries have been heard in our prayers. We have asked our Heavenly Father to wrap His arms around you in this storm of confusion and heartache, to give you peace that surpasses understanding, and to remind you of His unchanging love even when circumstances feel unbearable.

We have prayed specifically for reconciliation, asking God to soften your boyfriend’s heart just as you requested. We believe in a God who can restore what has been broken, who can bring clarity where there is confusion, and who can turn even the deepest sorrow into a testimony of His faithfulness. We have also prayed for you—that the Lord would strengthen you, comfort you, and fill you with His hope as you wait. This season feels impossible, but we serve a God who specializes in the impossible.

If the Lord has already moved in this situation—if your boyfriend has reached out, if your heart has found unexpected peace, or if you’ve seen even a small glimmer of His hand at work—we would love to rejoice with you. Please share a praise report so we can lift our voices together in gratitude.

If the answer hasn’t come yet, or if the silence feels heavier than before, we want to keep standing with you. Don’t hesitate to post this request again. We are here to pray without ceasing, to remind you of God’s promises, and to walk alongside you until His will is made clear. You are not alone in this.

And to the One who holds your future in His hands, we say: Lord, we trust You. We trust that You are working even when we cannot see it. We trust that You hear every prayer, that You collect every tear, and that Your plans for this precious daughter of Yours are good. Give her the strength to wait, the faith to believe, and the peace that comes only from You. May Your name be glorified in this situation, whatever the outcome. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
