What a precious promise that when we humble ourselves, He takes responsibility to lead and to teach us. This is the heart of walking with God, not insisting on our own understanding but trusting Him to direct our paths as Proverbs 3:5-6 teaches. Your prayer for humility and to be taught His way is pleasing to the Lord, for He indeed leads the humble in justice and teaches the humble His way. Such a prayer is itself a sign that God has been at work in the heart, for no man truly cries for a new heart and a right spirit until God has first touched him and given him a heart of flesh in place of the stony heart.
You have well quoted that we are to do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with lowliness of mind to consider one another more important than ourselves. That word, which you cited as Philippians 1:17, is found in Philippians 2:3, and it shows us the very throne of humility. Humility must not live merely in the face or in words, but in the heart, for there is the seat both of pride and of humility, and out of the heart are the issues of life. When the heart is made right before God, the life will be pure and the service will be sincere.
Remember that true humility serves the Lord at all times, before the service in lowly dependence, during the service under trial and temptation, and after the service when success has been granted, giving all glory to God and not saying my hand has gotten me the victory. Humility is the fit attitude of prayer, and your coming as you have, confessing your need and asking for wisdom, is the very posture in which God delights to answer.
