Psalm 37:4

We hear your heart in this verse, and we rejoice with you in the truth that God delights in giving His children the desires of their hearts, when those desires align with His will. Psalm 37:4 is a beautiful promise, but it begins with a call to delight in the Lord first. This means our deepest joy must be found in Him, not in the fulfillment of our own wishes. When we seek Him above all else, He shapes our desires to match His perfect plan.

Let us pray together for you:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with grateful hearts, knowing that You alone are the giver of every good and perfect gift. We lift up this dear one to You, asking that You would draw them closer to Your heart. Help them to delight in You above all else, to find their joy and satisfaction in Your presence. Align their desires with Your will, Lord, and grant them the patience to wait on Your perfect timing. If there is any area of their life where their longings do not yet reflect Your purposes, soften their heart to surrender it to You. May they trust in Your faithfulness, knowing that You work all things together for the good of those who love You. In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.

We also want to gently encourage you to examine your heart’s desires in light of Scripture. Are you seeking God’s will above your own? Are your longings rooted in holiness, purity, and obedience to His Word? Sometimes, our desires can become idols if we cling to them more tightly than we cling to God. James 4:3 warns us, "You ask and don’t receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures." Let us ask the Lord to purify our motives and to help us seek His kingdom first (Matthew 6:33).

If your desires involve a relationship, we urge you to consider whether it aligns with God’s design for marriage, a covenant between one man and one woman, founded on Christ and His Word (Genesis 2:24, Ephesians 5:22-33). If you are currently in a relationship that does not honor God, whether through premarital intimacy, ungodly influences, or a partnership that does not reflect His standards, we encourage you to repent and seek His guidance. The Lord is faithful to forgive and restore (1 John 1:9), and He can lead you into a relationship that glorifies Him.

Above all, remember that Jesus Christ is the only way to the Father (John 14:6). If you have not yet surrendered your life to Him, we urge you to do so today. Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). Confess your sins, believe in your heart that Jesus died for you and rose again, and invite Him to be the Lord of your life. He promises to make you new (2 Corinthians 5:17) and to give you a hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).

To fix the heart’s desires upon any earthly object is to court disappointment, for the creature can never satisfy the soul. But when the soul makes God Himself its chief delight, then the desires are lifted heavenward, purified, and made such as God may safely grant. The promise is not that every passing whim shall be indulged, but that when a man finds his all in the Lord, the very longings of his inmost being become conformed to the divine will. He shapes the heart’s requests even as He answers them.

Think of the past mercies, the tender pity that bore with your failings, the patience that chided not as your sins deserved. He who remembered your frame and knew you were but dust has been leading you by a right way, though it may have been a rough one. And do you suppose He will now deny you the desires He Himself has stirred within you? Rather, rest in the Lord. The evil as well as the good is under His hand; there are no accidents in the life of the child of God. The hairs of your head are numbered, and the steps of your pilgrimage are all mapped by infinite wisdom.

Therefore, sing in the ways of the Lord. If your path today winds through the wilderness, let the praise of the God who leads you there rise from your heart. For this delighting in God is not a duty merely, it is a feast. It is the sweet dessert of communion with Christ, a leaning of the head upon His bosom, and out of that nearness arise desires which He loves to fulfill.

But be sure of this: the desires He grants are those born in the heart that has His Law treasured within. When obedience springs from the affections, when the very core of the man is set upon pleasing God, then the longings of the soul are the echoes of the Spirit’s own pleading. And such prayers, steeped in delight for God Himself, never return empty.

Declare His works, then, and in the declaring your own heart shall be strengthened. Tell how He has taken the heart of stone and given the heart of flesh, how He has loosed the prison doors of sin and brought you into the liberty of His love. As you recount His faithfulness, the flickering delight shall flame forth anew, and you shall find the desires of your heart not so much granted as overtaken and swallowed up in the far greater joy of having Him.
