It is written in Psalm 34:8, 'Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.' Thank You God that we can experience this blessing as we delve in Your ways and spend time with You Lord.

We rejoice with you in the truth of Psalm 34:8, "Taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!" What a beautiful reminder that our greatest joy and security are found in the Lord alone. As we draw near to Him, He draws near to us (James 4:8), and in His presence, there is fullness of joy (Psalm 16:11).

Yet we must also examine our hearts to ensure that our pursuit of God is not merely about experiencing His blessings but about surrendering our lives entirely to Him. Jesus warned that not everyone who says, "Lord, Lord," will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only those who do the will of the Father (Matthew 7:21). Have we truly tasted and seen His goodness by submitting to His lordship, or are we merely seeking the comfort of His promises without the commitment of discipleship?

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with grateful hearts, acknowledging that every good and perfect gift comes from You (James 1:17). We thank You for the invitation to taste and see Your goodness, to find refuge in You, and to experience the blessings of walking in Your ways. Lord, we confess that at times we have sought Your blessings more than Your presence, Your gifts more than Your will. Forgive us, Father, and renew in us a hunger and thirst for righteousness (Matthew 5:6).

Help us to delve deeply into Your Word, not just for knowledge, but for transformation. May Your Holy Spirit guide us into all truth (John 16:13), convicting us of sin, comforting us in sorrow, and empowering us to live lives that honor You. Teach us to abide in Christ, for apart from Him, we can do nothing (John 15:5). May our time with You not be a mere ritual but a living, breathing relationship where we hear Your voice and follow Your lead.

Lord, we also pray for those who may be reading this who have not yet tasted and seen Your goodness in a personal way. Open their eyes to see their need for a Savior. Soften their hearts to receive the truth that Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life, and that no one comes to the Father except through Him (John 14:6). May they turn from their sins and place their trust in Jesus alone for salvation, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12).

Strengthen us, Lord, to walk in obedience to Your Word, even when it is difficult. Help us to store up treasures in heaven rather than on earth (Matthew 6:19-21) and to seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness (Matthew 6:33). May our lives reflect Your love, grace, and truth to a world that desperately needs You.

We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who gave Himself for us so that we might live for Him. Amen.

Let us also remember that tasting and seeing the Lord’s goodness is not just for our own benefit but so that we might share it with others. Jesus commanded us to go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). As we experience His goodness, let us be eager to tell others about the hope we have in Christ. May our lives be a testimony to His faithfulness, and may we always point others to Him, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).

That verse from Psalm 34 has always held a special place because it invites us not just to learn about God, but to experience Him. What you’re describing, digging into His ways and spending unhurried time with Him, is the kind of faith that runs deep. It’s not driven by obligation but by the discovery that He is worth every minute. And that discovery naturally becomes a refuge. When life presses in, the memory of His goodness steadies us.

We would simply encourage you to keep that taste alive. Maybe the only next step is to protect that space with God, to keep showing up even when the feelings shift. How blessed is the soul that truly tastes and sees that the Lord is good! Yet this taste is but a foretaste, faith believes to see the goodness of the Lord even in this land of the living, so distracted with sorrows and trials, but it looks beyond to the clearer vision. The glory of God’s goodness is never so fully seen as in the face of Jesus Christ. Apart from Him, men do not see the true goodness of God. In the gift of His Son, divine goodness pours forth without measure: taste this, God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son to be the propitiation for sin. There is no sweetness like the sweetness of His sacrifice.

You must be awake to see His glory. The disciples beheld it when they shook off slumber; and when you are thoroughly awake to your dangers, your needs, your weaknesses, then you will see Christ’s glory as your all in all. Faith is not content with a distant hope; it expects to see goodness now, even in the midst of fog and trial. And it does so by taking hold of God’s covenant. Make a dash at Christ! Lay hold on Him and say, "If I perish, I will perish trusting in His merit and His blood." He who lays hold on Christ has laid hold on the covenant of grace, and that covenant shall stand secure when earth’s huge columns crumble.

As you have heard, so shall you see. The goodness of God is an argument for repentance, it leads you to turn from sin and cling to the Shepherd who gave His life for the sheep. Taste, then, and see that He is good, and take refuge in Him, for there is no other shelter. Press on in your fellowship with Him, and your tasting shall ripen into the full vision, until the day when you stand before the throne, seeing His goodness with unveiled face. There is a solemn warning, too: if any taste and yet turn away, that same goodness will leave them without excuse, and they shall see the saints in the kingdom while they themselves are thrust out. But for you who trust, He will precede you with the blessings of goodness, and you shall find Him a Good Shepherd, who knows His own and is known by them. Oh, taste and see!

You have spoken well in desiring to taste the Lord’s goodness, for indeed He invites us to this. Yet take heed how you taste. Many have tasted the heavenly gift, the forgiveness of sins and the powers of the age to come, and yet have fallen away, crucifying the Son of God afresh, as it were, and putting Him to open shame. That taste, when not held fast with a whole heart, becomes a condemnation, not a blessing. So while you rejoice, tremble and cling to the refuge you have found.

The refuge spoken of in the Psalm is no escape from the wilderness. The saints of old wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth, as exiles and outcasts, burying themselves alive, yet they took refuge in God and were not forsaken. The Apostle Paul, in chains, took refuge in the will of God and prayed only for a door to speak the mystery of Christ. His bonds did not obscure his boldness; he sought not ease but to glorify the One who tasted death for every man. This is the refuge that endures: not a life free from pain, but a soul so fastened upon God that neither poverty, illness, nor the prosperity of the wicked can shake it.

Do not join the ungrateful who complain that a cripple from childhood or a madman suffering is unworthy of God’s goodness. They measure mercy with a human measure, but as wide as the interval between wickedness and goodness, so far is man’s mercy removed from God’s. His ways are deep. He withholds what we think good to give what is truly good. The one thing truly good He has already given: His Son, who though needing nothing, tasted death that we might taste life. When you call upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ in every place, whether in ease or in chains, the Father is glorified. For whatever great thing we say of the Son passes to the Father. This is your blessing: that in taking refuge in Him, you confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.

Therefore taste, but taste with perseverance. Let the goodness you have known lead you to repentance that is not renewed again and again by shallow feelings, but sealed by a life that hides in Christ alone. For blessed is the one who takes refuge not in health, wealth, or human comfort, but in the mercy that flows from the throne of God, where our Lord and theirs, in every place, pours out grace and peace.

Taste and see. Those words invite you into something real, not just a theory. You’re not standing at a distance hoping God is good based on what someone told you. You’re leaning in, taking a real mouthful, and finding His flavor on your own terms. When you spend time in His ways, you aren’t earning a reward. You’re simply positioning yourself where the blessing already flows.

So much of our thinking gets tangled up in the idea that goodness has to be paid for. If I behave, God will be nice to me. If I mess up, I should brace for the worst. But Psalm 34 doesn’t say “Be perfect and see.” It says taste and see. Blessing isn’t the paycheck you receive for a flawless week. It’s the shelter you run into when you know you can’t survive on your own. The one who takes refuge in Him is blessed. Not the one who has it all together. The one who knows where to hide.

That refuge is a person. Jesus is the city of refuge, wide open to the one who flees for cover. Not for the smug, not for the self-righteous, but for the soul that knows it needs mercy. You’ve tasted that, and you’ll keep tasting as you press deeper. His goodness doesn’t run dry. He satisfies the hungry soul and fills the longing soul with good things, not because we’ve never failed, but because He promised Abraham a blessing that would reach all who believe. That promise found its yes in Christ, and now it reaches you through simple trust.

Sometimes His goodness is hard to handle. We almost wait for the other shoe to drop because our hearts were trained by a world of conditions. But the covenant He made with you in Jesus is not a bargain; it’s an inheritance. It rests on His purpose, not your record. So when you linger in His presence, don’t come bracing for disappointment. Come expecting to be blessed, even when you don’t deserve it. That’s the whole point. It’s His kindness that leads you to change, not your change that earns His kindness.

What you’ve discovered in that verse isn’t a fleeting feeling. It’s the doorway into rest. There is a rest that Moses couldn’t give, a rest that religious striving can never produce. But those who believe do enter that rest. So keep tasting. Keep running to Him as your refuge. Let His goodness undo you without fear. He is good, and in His presence there is fullness of joy, not because you are good enough, but because He is.
