Psalm 31:1

We are blessed that you have brought Psalm 31:1 before us and we want to reflect on this beautiful truth together with you.

In Psalm 31:1 it says, In you, Yahweh, I take refuge. Let me never be disappointed. Deliver me in your righteousness.

This is David crying out from a place of distress and yet with confident faith. He does not take refuge in his own strength, his army, or his wisdom, but in Yahweh alone. We are reminded in Psalm 46:1 that God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, and in Psalm 18:2 that Yahweh is our rock, our fortress, and our deliverer. To take refuge in Him is to run into His presence for safety, trusting that He will not let those who trust in Him be put to shame or disappointed.

David also prays, Deliver me in your righteousness. He does not ask to be delivered because of his own goodness, but because of God's righteous character and faithful love. We have no righteousness of our own to claim, for as it says in Romans 3:23 all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God. Our hope is that God delivers us through His righteousness given to us in Christ, for He made him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God in 2 Corinthians 5:21.

We notice your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to lovingly share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to this refuge and deliverance. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And in Acts 4:12 it says, There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. It is because Jesus shed His blood and rose again that we can boldly take refuge in Yahweh and be delivered, not by our merit but by His grace through faith in Him. If you have not yet put your trust in Him, we encourage you to confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, for with the heart one believes resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation as taught in Romans 10:9-10.

We pray together with you in Jesus name.

Father, we thank You that You are our refuge and our deliverer. We take refuge in You today and ask that You would never let us be put to shame, but deliver us in Your righteousness. Forgive us where we have trusted in ourselves or in the things of this world instead of You. Wash us in the blood of Jesus and clothe us in His righteousness. Strengthen the one who shared this verse, that they may know Your nearness, Your protection, and Your faithful deliverance in every trial. Help them to trust You more deeply and to call upon the name of Jesus for salvation and for daily refuge. Let Your peace guard their heart and let them walk in confidence that You hear their prayer. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

We appreciated you sharing that psalm with us. It tells us you are wanting to rest in the Lord as your refuge, asking him to cover you and keep you from shame.

Trust is not just a feeling. It is choosing to place what feels most vulnerable into God's hands because we have come to see he is faithful to care for us. That choice can be hard when life feels unsteady, and it often grows little by little as we keep bringing our honest needs to him and noticing his steadiness. You do not have to have everything figured out to come to him, coming as you are is itself an act of trust.

If this prayer is especially on your heart right now, it may help to keep it before the Lord in your own words through the day, naming plainly what feels heavy or uncertain and asking for his leading. It can also help to let one trusted pastor or believing friend know you are leaning on this psalm, so someone nearby can walk with you and pray with you in person. We are glad you reached out and we want to keep holding you in prayer.

Father, thank you that you are a refuge we can run to. We lift our friend to you today and ask you to draw near, quiet any shame or fear, and give wisdom and peace for each next step. Help them sense your nearness and your faithful care. In Jesus' name, amen.

To put your trust in the Lord is to handle your matter wisely, and there is no wiser handle than that which you have laid hold upon in this Psalm. In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust let me never be ashamed deliver me in thy righteousness. This is the refuge of the child of God when he is brought into peril and trouble.

You do well to bring this word before the Lord, for we trust not in a dead force or a name only, but in the living God who made heaven and earth and who sustains all things by the power of His almighty arm. He is a thinking God, an active God, a working personal God who comes into the midst of this world and does not leave His people to go on by themselves. To trust Him is not rashness, but true prudence, for He is a God of order and economy, and when we act in uprightness and rely simply and entirely upon Him we find good.

And see how the prayer turns not to your own righteousness but to His. Deliver me in thy righteousness. There is no deliverance in our own merit, but God Himself has found a ransom. Nobody would have thought of that way of deliverance of a sinner from the pit through a ransom if God had not thought of it, yet He has invented it and He has provided it in the blood and finished righteousness of His Son. That voice you shall hear if you are a child of God when you get into a fix, God has given commandment to save you and you shall be saved. Saved from sin, saved from going down to the pit, saved with an eternal deliverance which the infernal lion shall never be able to rend.

Therefore trust His Son at once. Do not wait for a blaze of joy before you trust Him, but take your trouble to Him this morning and do not bear it till night. Lean not to your own understanding, but trust in the Lord with all your heart. He that believes God is no longer an enemy to Him, and those whom we trust we soon learn to love. He will not let you be ashamed who has promised, I will never leave thee nor forsake thee. To be ashamed is impossible to those whom He keeps, for the candle which God has lighted the devils of hell cannot blow out.

We will pray with you that the Lord who commanded light to shine out of darkness will shine in your heart to give you the knowledge of His glory in the face of Jesus Christ, that you may be kept from shame, delivered in His righteousness, and consecrated anew to the God of Israel who fills both the bitter cup and the sweet goblet for your good. Cast your burden upon Him, depend upon His Son, and you shall be saved and find your path to heaven.
