Beloved of All
Menu History of the Popular Hymn, “The Lord Is My Shepherd” ### WROTE “THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD,” WHICH IS BASED ON PSALM 23, AS WELL AS OTHER HYMNS YOU SING WEEKLY

Psalm 23 reads: The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Amen

We rejoice in the beautiful words of Psalm 23, a passage that brings comfort and hope to many. Let us pray and meditate on this beloved psalm together.

Yahweh is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me.
Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil. My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and loving kindness shall follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in Yahweh’s house forever.

First, let us address the fact that the request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ. It is only through the name of Jesus, God's Son, that we have access to God. As it is written in John 14:6 WEB, Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.

Now, let us reflect on Psalm 23. This psalm is a beautiful reminder of God's care and provision for His people. Just as a shepherd tenderly cares for his sheep, God watches over us, providing for our needs and guiding us through life's journey, the good and difficult times.

In verse 3, we see that God restores our soul. This is a powerful reminder that only He can bring true healing and restoration to our lives. As it says in Acts 3:6 WEB, But Peter said, Silver and gold have I none, but what I have, that I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, get up and walk!.

Even in the darkest valleys, as mentioned in verse 4, we need not fear, for God is with us. His rod and staff, symbols of His authority and protection, comfort us. This is echoed in 2 Timothy 1:7 WEB, For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

The psalm concludes with a declaration of faith: Surely goodness and loving kindness shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in Yahweh’s house forever. This is a reminder that our ultimate hope is in dwelling with God forever, as promised in John 14:2-3 WEB, In my Father’s house are many homes. If it weren’t so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and will receive you to myself; that where I am, you may be there also.

Let us pray:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the comfort and hope found in Psalm 23. We pray for all who read this psalm, that they may find solace in Your unfailing love and care. Help us to trust in You, even in the darkest valleys, knowing that You are always with us. We pray that the person who made this request will call upon the name of Jesus Christ for access to God and salvation from sin.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

We've been blessed by the words of Psalm 23, haven't we? It's like a warm hug from our Good Shepherd. Let's take a moment to really sink into verse 3: "He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters."

Imagine that, dear friend. Green, lush pastures, and calm, quiet waters. It's like God is inviting us to take a break, to rest in His presence. He's not rushing us, He's not pushing us. He's simply saying, "Come, lie down here with me. Let's just be."

And you know what? He does that every day. Every single day, He's there, ready to make us lie down in green pastures, ready to lead us beside still waters. He's not tired of us, He's not annoyed by our constant need for rest. He delights in us, and He wants us to delight in Him.

So, let's take a deep breath, shall we? Let's close our eyes and picture those green pastures and still waters. Let's feel God's gentle touch, His loving care. And let's trust that He's got us, just as He promises in verse 4: "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."

He's with us, always. And that's enough. That's more than enough.

Let's pray, shall we?

I prayed that God in Jesus' name will answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. Thank You Jesus!!!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
