Your thanksgiving has come up before the Lord and it is good that you begin with gratitude, for the Covenant of Grace and the atonement by blood and the immutable love of the ever blessed Three in One call for our constant praise. You have well invoked Psalm 91 and Psalm 121, and you do well to remember the word of the Lord in Luke 10:19, that He has given power to tread upon serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy.
There is forgiveness with God, and the declaration is in the present tense. There is forgiveness now. Do not confound chastisement with punishment. Punishment is for the guilty to satisfy justice, but chastisement is for the child and flows from the Father's love. Your sins, confessed before Him, are put away by the blood which has made a full atonement. The veil is rent, and Hebrews 10:19 teaches that through the blood of Jesus there is boldness to enter into the holiest. Your heart sprinkled from an evil conscience may come with confidence where God has not only set open the door but removed it, post and bar and all, through Christ. Look unto Him and be saved, look out of yourself and away from yourself and look to Christ, for God has found a ransom in Himself, in His own well beloved Son given to bleed and die for mortal men.
You ask for peace and rest, and these are two names for a flower which buds on earth but is found full blown in Heaven, yet Christ gives a present rest, rest now, not only rest after death. Come unto Him, all you that labour and are heavy laden, and He will give you rest. Take His yoke upon you and learn of Him, for He is meek and lowly in heart, and you shall find rest unto your souls. Here we have peace from lips that cannot lie, peace from a heart which cannot change, peace through the blood. Seek this peace and make sure of it, and let the Holy Spirit apply the Word to your soul as food for hunger and medicine for disease.
You ask that the Lord would rebuke evil and remove it from your home and your person. The fiery darts of Satan are constantly shot against the people of God, and where there is a wound of sin that arrow burns hot. Yet faith comforts the tried child of God by assuring him that his afflictions, though they may come distinctly from man or from malice, come with greater certainty from the Lord's hand for good, and we may wisely moderate our anger against second causes and say, The will of the Lord be done. At the same time, the Lord says, Deliver him from going down to the pit, for He has found a ransom. That deliverance is an eternal one, and the infernal lion shall not rend one sheep that the Great Shepherd keeps. In Christ you have authority over all the power of the enemy, and He who keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps. He that dwells in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty, and He shall preserve your going out and your coming in.
You ask also for forgiveness of any unforgiveness in your own heart. Plead that precious promise, He shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities, and never rest till you are fully freed from the bondage of sin, for God will work a perfect work in you. As you have been forgiven much, so by His grace you shall be enabled to forgive.
Concerning additional income and work for your former employer, commit your way unto the Lord and trust also in Him. The Lord loves judgment and forsakes not His saints, they are preserved forever, and the righteous shall inherit the land. He knows those who have received His Word and looks with gracious approval upon them. Ask Him to guide your hands and open the right door, and to give you contentment and diligence in whatever honest labour He provides.
For those you have named, we join you in prayer that the Lord would keep them safe from harm in their coming and going. May He be their keeper and their shade upon their right hand, may He preserve them from all evil and preserve their souls.
Let us pray together. Heavenly Father, we thank You for this day and for Your mercies which are new every morning. We plead the blood of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of all sin, and ask You to heal every root of unforgiveness. Grant deliverance, peace and rest to this Your child, and rebuke all evil from this home and person. By Your grace and mercy, remove what harms and let Your presence dwell there. Provide for daily needs and guide in all work and decisions. Keep and protect those entrusted to Your care, in their coming and going, under the shadow of Your wings. All this we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is our only hope and our peace, Amen.
