When you cry out for restored kidneys and a successful surgery, you do well to acknowledge the Physician of our souls and bodies. For He who called Lazarus from the tomb, already decaying, is not hindered by a stone in the flesh. He permitted the stone at the grave to remain so that the witnesses might know it was truly the dead man arisen, their hands lifted the stone, their noses perceived the stench, their eyes beheld him bound and then freed. So also He works through the hands of your doctors, that their skill and your healing might testify to His power. Pray for this, but enter the spiritual surgery of this place with a care for your deeper wounds. For what does it profit if the body is sound while the soul is passing a stone of offense? Not what enters the body defiles, but what proceeds from the heart. The sickness of sin is the greater malady.
You ask forgiveness and speak of His mercy and grace. This is the true healing. Let the knife of repentance cut away every hard accretion of anger, lust, and greed that clings to you more tightly than any stone to a kidney. Do not merely ask for cleansing while clutching the very things that defile, for you would then be like a man who prays for a surgeon’s skill while refusing to uncover his wound. The mere desire will not suffice; even a tree that stands through ten blows may fall by the eleventh. Do not despair if you have often heard these things and remained unchanged. The harvest comes at the proper time when the soil of the heart has been broken. Seek therefore a contrite spirit, which is the true sacrifice.
You request guidance for the day and a blessing upon family and friends. Understand then what is most needful for them. It is not a smooth path, but their edification unto Christ. The Apostle Paul counted it better to delay his own rest with Christ so that he might profit his neighbor. This is the highest blessing you can desire for those you love, not a blanket of comfort, but that they be built up in the faith, even if it requires struggle. For he who truly loves his brother will not see a weak conscience emboldened to sin by a careless use of liberty. To suffer wrong is to receive a benefit; to do wrong and injure a brother is to strike at the image of God and wound oneself.
You cry out for the world’s healing, an end to war, homelessness, and hunger. Yet how can the world be healed when the church is full of those who devour one another? You ask for the hungry to be fed while perhaps defrauding your brother. The root of war and destitution is the war within the human heart, where passions do battle and greed starves compassion. If you would see the land healed, begin with the stone of your own heart. Let the Spirit engrave a new law upon it, not one of stone and death, but a living epistle of love. For love alone makes faith, knowledge, and even a martyr’s death to be of any advantage. Without it, a voice raised in a grand Hallelujah is a clanging cymbal.
Give glory to God, then, not merely with a shout, but with a life whose melody is obedience. Lay hold of eternal life now, by doing His will. His will is not a mystery hidden from you; it is to work for your neighbor’s good. In this, you will find your provision, for the Provider is not mocked. When you truly give yourself to this, your prayer for doctors will be anchored in faith, your plea for forgiveness will be joined to amendment, and your cry for a bleeding world will begin with the healing of the wound closest to your own door.
