Proverbs, Chapter 25

25:1 These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.

25:2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing; But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.

25:3 As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth, So the heart of kings is unsearchable.

25:4 Take away the dross from the silver, And there comes forth a vessel for the refiner:

25:5 Take away the wicked [from] before the king, And his throne will be established in righteousness.

25:6 Don't put yourself forward in the presence of the king, And don't stand in the place of great men:

25:7 For it is better that it is said to you, Come up here, Than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince, Whom your eyes have seen.

25:8 Don't hastily bring [it] to court, Or else what will you do in its end, When your fellow man has put you to shame.

25:9 Debate your cause with your fellow man [himself], And don't disclose the secret of another;

25:10 Or else he who hears it will revile you, And your infamy will not turn away.

25:11 A word fitly spoken Is [like] apples of gold in network of silver.

25:12 [As] an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, [so is] a wise reprover on an obedient ear.

25:13 As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, [so is] a faithful messenger to those who send him; For he refreshes the soul of his masters.

25:14 [As] clouds and wind without rain, [so is] he who boasts himself of his gifts falsely.

25:15 By long forbearing is a ruler persuaded, And a soft tongue breaks the bone.

25:16 Have you found honey? Eat so much as is sufficient for you, Or else you will be filled with it, and vomit it.

25:17 Let your foot be seldom in your fellow man's house, Or else he will be weary of you, and hate you.

25:18 A man who bears false witness against his fellow man Is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

25:19 Confidence in a betrayer in time of trouble Is [like] a crumbling tooth, and an unsteady foot.

25:20 [As] vinegar on lye, and [as] smoke for the eyes, So is he who sings songs to a heavy heart.

25:21 If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; And if he is thirsty, give him water to drink:

25:22 For you will heap coals of fire on his head, And Yahweh will reward you.

25:23 The north wind brings forth rain: So does a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.

25:24 It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, Than with a contentious woman in a wide house.

25:25 [As] cold waters to a thirsty soul, So is good news from a far country.

25:26 [As] a troubled fountain, and a corrupted spring, [so is] a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.

25:27 It is not good to eat much honey: And searching out their glory is glory.

25:28 He whose spirit is without restraint Is [like] a city that is broken down and without walls.

The following discussion is from the January Reading of This Chapter of Proverbs at ericasp.com:

<img title="water" src="http://public.prayerrequest.com/images/pr365/DrinkingPollutedWater.jpg" alt="water" width="500" height="414" />

Like a muddied spring or a polluted well is a righteous man who gives way to the wicked (Proverbs 25:26).

Righteousness cannot be done half-heartedly. As with any water supply, even the slightest bit of contamination makes the supply "contaminated." Think about a tall glass (let's say half a liter) of crystal-clear ice-water; and then think about just the tiniest bit of dog poop (let's say 5 miligrams) stirred in. Would you drink that water??? Or what if a local chemical company knocked on your door to say that the local water supply -- the water that feeds into your home -- had been compromised by a leak at the plant? What if they stood there on your doorstep, reassuring you that it was really just a very tiny bit of spillage and seepage, and that it was "probably nothing to worry about at all?" Would you say, "Ah, it's no big deal; don't worry about it"? No! Of course not! Contamination is something to be taken very seriously.

Likewise, a lifetime of good choices can be easily overshadowed by a single bad choice, when the righteous person gives way to the wicked -- even if it's just a momentary lapse.

Of course, it's important to remember that we are offered forgiveness and absolution of sin through Jesus' sacrifice on the Cross (see Romans 3:21-24 -- or, even better, read all of Romans chapters 3, 4, and 5 to get some idea of the incredible offer for a fresh start with God, even after a lifetime of mistakes). It's a great relief to know that such instant justification is available to us, which Solomon did not yet know or fully understand. Even so, it's also true that each choice we make carries significance.

This verse challenges me -- in a good way. It makes sure that I cannot ever rest on my laurels. Or that I am somehow above the temptations of "common man," no matter how long I have been faithfully following God. Rather, I daily have to ask myself: How am I going to respond the next time I experience pressure (internal or external) to fudge things a bit? How will I react when the wicked are all up in my face, trying to bully my life in a certain direction? It only takes a little bit of dog droppings to ruin the ice-water.

Speaking of Proverbs of Solomon in 25:1, Solomon was known for having a harem and many women were given to him as gifts by foreigners. Some say he had over 700 wives. Of course he lived long before Christ was incarnate, almost one thousand years before, and interfaced with the Egyptians and he is also known for his magical works. It is also understood that he received punishment for his ways and that he lived in luxury which, as a consequence, heavy taxes had to be placed upon the city. What thoughts does anyone have on these things?

Cold waters to a thristy soul. 28.28 is my favorite in this chapter. We live in a world where temptations are near and far. Our souls thrist for the Word of God whenever we fail to obey God or forget to read and meditate. The samaritan woman found out this truth by herself when she was talking to Jesus . If you drink of the water that I give you then you will never thrist again. Jesus please give this water. All Gods children always thrist for the waters that flow from the heart of the living God. Thank you Lord for your wonderful word. Amen

25.11 Says...A word fitly spoken is like a golden apple. How many times our words have hurt other people in church, in the streets and in our work place. As a child of the living God our words should be a blessing, an encouragement to others who suffer untold pain because of sin and an unrepentant heart. Our words should be like a golden apple where others can taste the blessing God is speaking through our lips. Our whole being should be an offering to the Jesus to bless others and not curse, to help those who are sinking in the quick sands of sin and unrighteousness. Dear God, please help us to speak with love and wisdom to others who are not saved and need to see Jesus in our lives. How we live, and act every single day of our lives. May our words be with grace and love. Just like Jesus spoke two thousand years ago. Amen

He whose spirit is without restraint is like a city with a broken walls. Dear Jesus help me to get my spirit under the control of the Holy Ghost. To love my brothers and sisters in the Lord. To serve the poor with their needs. To live a life of holiness like your word tells us. Without holiness no man shall see the Lord. May my spirit be restrained by thy power and serve you with my whole heart, soul and mind. Thank you Jesus for giving me insight into your word and to think how we should live and act in front of other people. Thank you for my pastor, his wife and his dear children. Bless them and keep them safe from temptations and sin. In Jesus name. Amen

A word fittly spoken.. it is like honey in a bun. So sweet we can really taste. Pleae dear brothers and sisters speak blessing to others and many more blessing will come to you when given a word of wisdom and understanding that comes from God. At the canteen we always say a blessing before we eat. Dear Lord... thank you so much for the blessing we receive every day in our lives. So our words should be praise, honor and glory to God almighty. He is He was and He will come to pick us up and get us to heaven. Amen
