Proverbs, Chapter 16

16:1 The plans of the heart belong to man; But the answer of the tongue is from Yahweh.

16:2 All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; But Yahweh weighs the spirits.

16:3 Commit your works to Yahweh, And your purposes will be established.

16:4 Yahweh has made everything for its own end; Yes, even the wicked for the day of evil.

16:5 Everyone who is proud in heart is disgusting to Yahweh: [Though] hand [join] in hand, he will not be unpunished.

16:6 By mercy and truth iniquity is atoned for; And by the fear of Yahweh men depart from evil.

16:7 When a man's ways please Yahweh, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.

16:8 Better is a little, with righteousness, Than great revenues with injustice.

16:9 The heart of man devises his way; But Yahweh directs his steps.

16:10 A divine sentence is in the lips of the king; His mouth will not transgress in judgment.

16:11 A just balance and scales are Yahweh's; All the weights of the bag are his work.

16:12 It is disgusting to kings to commit wickedness; For the throne is established by righteousness.

16:13 Righteous lips are the delight of kings; And they love him who speaks right.

16:14 The wrath of a king is [as] messengers of death; But a wise man will pacify it.

16:15 In the light of the king's countenance is life; And his favor is as a cloud of the latter rain.

16:16 How much better it is to get wisdom than gold! Yes, to get understanding is rather to be chosen than silver.

16:17 The highway of the upright is to depart from evil: He who keeps his way preserves his soul.

16:18 Pride [goes] before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.

16:19 It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor, Than to divide the spoil with the proud.

16:20 He who gives heed to the word will find good; And whoever trusts in Yahweh, he is happy.

16:21 The wise in heart will be called prudent; And the sweetness of the lips increases learning.

16:22 Understanding is a wellspring of life to him who has it; But the correction of fools is [their] folly.

16:23 The heart of the wise instructs his mouth, And adds learning to his lips.

16:24 Pleasant words are [as] a honeycomb, Sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

16:25 There is a way which seems right to a man, But its end are the ways of death.

16:26 The appetite of the laboring man labors for him; For his mouth urges him [thereto].

16:27 A worthless man devises mischief; And in his lips there is as a scorching fire.

16:28 A perverse man scatters abroad strife; And a whisperer separates best friends.

16:29 A man of violence entices his fellow man, And leads him in a way that is not good.

16:30 He who shuts his eyes, [it is] to devise perverse things: He who compresses his lips brings evil to pass.

16:31 The gray head is a crown of glory; It will be found in the way of righteousness.

16:32 He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty; And he who rules his spirit, than he who takes a city.

16:33 The lot is cast into the lap; But the whole disposing of it is of Yahweh.

The following discussion is from the January Reading of This Chapter of Proverbs at ericasp.com:<BR><BR>

<blockquote>

<p>Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city. (Proverbs 16:32)</p>

</blockquote>

<div><br /></div>

<div>This is one of those Proverbs worth memorizing. And not only memorizing, but mantra-izing! Particularly in moments of stress, frustration, anger, and rage, it helps to have some readily-available phraseology like this to fall back on. Think of it rhythmically, like this:</div>

<div><br /></div>

<blockquote>

<div>BETter a PAtient MAN... (PAUSE)</div>

<div>than a WARrior. (PAUSE - PAUSE - PAUSE)</div>

<div>BETter a PAtient MAN... (PAUSE)</div>

<div>than a WARrior. (PAUSE - PAUSE - PAUSE)</div>

<div>A MAN who conTROLS his TEMper (PAUSE)</div>

<div>A MAN who conTROLS his TEMper (PAUSE)</div>

<div>A MAN who conTROLS his TEMper (PAUSE)</div>

<div>then ONE (PAUSE) who TAKES (PAUSE) a CIty.</div>

</blockquote>

<div><br /></div>

<p>I really like the feel of this type of rhythmic mantra -- for times where patience and self-control are basically the LAST things that come to mind. I think it can be very helpful. But even more than self-help cheesiness, this mantra or chant is cool because it feels quite tribal to me. Powerful. Primal. Manly (you've got to imagine it to the sound of stomping feet, to get the full effect).</p>

<div><br /></div>

<div>And these concepts of patience trumping martial skills -- or of control trumping conquest -- need all the help they can get, if you ask me. Popular culture doesn't make these seem like very masculine traits. In fact, they're typically painted to be polar opposites: manly = testosterone = rage machine. Whereas only the women, only the metrosexual sissies, only the sweater-vested Stuart Smalley schmucks are "in touch" with themselves to the point of attempting self-control instead of competition, or patience instead of brawling. Popular culture today makes the patient, self-controlled man out to be almost pitiful, laughable, pathetic.</div>

<div><br /></div>

<div>But that's not how I see it at all (nor did King Solomon, for that matter).</div>

<div><br /></div>

<div>Think about this: think about holiday travel, busy airports, long lines -- you know, that kind of thing. Think about navigating this terrain, not just for regional travel or even for a long-distance domestic flight -- but for holiday-season, trans-continental air travel. And think about holiday-season, trans-continental air travel as a single parent with two small children. One of them spills an entire cup of apple juice over herself and then sits there crying and shivering in the cold. You've made the world's dumbest wardrobe choice for an 8-hour trans-continental flight while seated between two small children: a white, long-sleeved shirt. Still, you take off the shirt and drape your daughter in it so she can warm up again -- only to see it become flecked and drizzled with barbecue sauce and strawberry jam during lunch. A horrible head-ache sets in. And there are still 10 hours of travel-time ahead of you... Are you envisioning such a scenario??? (I can envision it quite graphically, because I got to experience it first-hand this last Christmas -- and it was a very long, drawn-out day that has left a very long, drawn-out memory). So let me ask you this: Who's the manlier man? The one who yells at his kids on an airplane and embarrasses himself by attempting to manipulate and/or intimidate the airport employees through out-of-control outbursts (you know you've seen them; maybe you've even perpetrated them!)? Or the one who exhibits patience and self-control, even in the most unpleasant circumstances -- the one who can take an apple-juice-soaking in stride? The one who reacts with grace and humility and kindness?</div>

<div><br /></div>

<div>I can't claim to be the mightiest man ever -- or that I handled everything in a truly exemplary way on that day of holiday-season trans-continental air travel with two small children... But I CAN say that I'm glad that day happened to occur on the 16th of the month, when I was specifically meditating on Proverbs chapter 16, verse 32.</div>

Quick Fact: Proverbs and Ecclesiastes have totally differing mood, coming from the same author (Solomon), from a different stage of his life: dwell in God, and living "away" from His presence (idolatry through polygamy).

Everyone who is proud of heart... is disgusting to God. This verse is the one I love more than the others. It makes us think how we will behave in front of other people. Specially at the office where we work. There are too many high and bad attitudes we have to see. Proud people have low steem of themselves so they try to show others how good they are. Please Jesus save all the people at my office and the bosses too. They are the proudest of all. In Jesus name amen.

Let us be slow to anger just as this wonderful verse tells us. We see in our daily routine people who are angry at other people of circumstance that they are going through. Please listen to the voice of God and be not angered at anything, instead let Jesus know about your problems and He will solve for you at the right time. In Jesus name Amen

Dear Lord. Have mercy on us because we are so weak in spirit and do not do the things you want us to do. But....my Father knows the things we have need of before we ask Him. Mt. 6.8  And this verse is the one that matches God makes his enemies be at peace with the one who loves Him. 16.7  If we had a fight with our spouse then we should start praying because Gods will is to be at peace with each other.. If we lost our job and have no money for food, then we should ask God for direction. His will is not to lack anything. Our heavenly father knows everything we are going through. And wants to help. Jesus gives the power of the Holy
Spirit to cast out any bad spirits that try to makes angry or be unhappy in this life. In Jesus name. Amen

I love Jesus with my whole heart and I know that He hears the prayers of all his dear children. Specially in the old age when our hair goes grey and then white. The grey head is a crown of glory. 16.31  Those of us who are growing old and see the wrinkles in their faces and the bones ache. Then it is time to praise Jesus for all He has done with us. We are nearing to the crown of glory that the Father in heaven will give to those who love Him and had served with their whole heart. Oh God you are our peace. In your holy presence there is fullness of joy. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Evey single day should be a day of joy because Jesus is with us all the time. Amen
