You ask for protection and breakthrough with an emphasis on extra strength. Let us examine this request together. The desire for protection is good, but we must understand what true protection is. The body is not evil, for it may be made an arm of righteousness. Yet because we are in a hard warfare, we need strong armor and a noble spirit. We need a Commander. The Commander is standing by, ever ready to help us, abiding unconquerable, and has furnished us with strong arms likewise. But having the arms is not enough. We need a purpose of mind to handle them as we should, to obey our Commander and take the field.
You ask for breakthrough. What is the wall that stands before you? It is often your own sleep. If we wake, we shall not need the help of others. But if we sleep, the help of others will profit us nothing. It is a good thing to enjoy the prayer of the Saints, but only when we ourselves are on the alert. Do not say, what need have I of prayer? On this account you need it, because you think that you have no need. Yea, though you become as Paul, you have need of prayer. Do not exalt yourself, lest you be humbled. The strong soldier is not only able to help himself, but also to protect his comrade and to free him from the malice of the enemy. So your prayer for all in need is fitting.
But understand this well. God does not precede our wills with His gifts. When we have begun, when we have sent our will before, then He gives us abundant opportunities of salvation. Though we strive ever so much, we can do no good thing at all except we are aided by help from above. Yet unless we contribute our own share, we shall not be able to obtain help from above. So do not place yourself in a situation to need a miracle while your hands remain idle. There is need not of pomp of words, but of strong minds, of skill in the Scriptures and of powerful thoughts.
And now hear the ground of all our confidence. He that is our High Priest is able to save to the uttermost those who come unto God by Him, since He ever lives to make intercession for them. He hath not left caring for us. This is a sign of very great love, that He addresses Another on our behalf. The Father spared not His own Son for you. Christ died and intercedes for you. The Spirit makes intercession for us with groanings that cannot be uttered. If then you enjoy such great love, why tremble? Why be afraid? Rise up. Take the armor. Let your companions be the poor and free who can rebuke and admonish you, not those who entertain your sloth. Engage them in a spiritual traffic. If you see one needing protection, succor them. Command them to minister. By these clothe the naked, by these send to the prison, put an end to the distresses of others. This is the breakthrough: to cease being entangled by deceit and to set others free who are deceived. Draw them out of dangers. Stand firm. The victory is already proclaimed. The Lord strong and mighty in battle has divided the spoils. Now go and fight.
