Protection

The ache behind a prayer like this reveals something important: you are already aware that you cannot manufacture the protection or the breakthrough you need. That very awareness is a gift. It is far better to be weak in yourself and reaching for Him than to be strong in your own resources and blinded to your peril.

Many begin well, trusting God when the enemy looks too big and the resources seem too small. But a strange danger creeps in later. When strength increases, when some measure of breakthrough comes, the heart can quietly shift its confidence. We start trusting the provisions, the walls we have built, the alliances we have made, instead of the One who gave them. This is the repeated tragedy that the Scriptures lay out for us. The wealthy man imagines his riches are a high wall, a strong city. But the name of the Lord is the only true strong tower, and the righteous run into it and are safe. That act of running is not a one-time event; it is a continuous dwelling place. It is saying, "Be my strong habitation, where I may continually resort."

Real protection often begins with a painful discovery. There was a teacher who thought he was alive and righteous because he had kept the external commands. Then the command to not covet, to not harbor the strong inner desire, struck him. That strong desire he had excused as no big deal suddenly became a spiritual issue, and he realized his heart was full of all manner of strong desires. Yet that painful discovery was what made him see his need for a different kind of strength, a love that motivates from the inside rather than a fearful observance of rules on the outside. Your desire for breakthrough and protection is not a sign to try harder in your own willpower. It is an invitation to let God deal with the deep inner longings, to yield even what seems like a strong point, so that His strength can be perfected where yours ends.

Do not fear that the challenge is too great. The One who commands us to be strong and very courageous also promises to be with us. He deliberately brings us to face enemies with chariots and numbers that overwhelm us. The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is perfect, wholly leaning, toward Him. His strength arises not from a noisy show, but from His seeing. He sees the battle before you, and He sees the recesses of your heart. He is your Jehovah-Jireh in the middle of the dilemma.

So, run into that strong tower now. In times of danger and crisis, it is the final bastion of defense against the enemy. Let your hands not be weak, for your work shall be rewarded. True breakthrough comes when a people know their God, for then they shall be strong and carry out great exploits. That knowing is not intellectual familiarity but a lived reliance. Go forward, not because your army is stronger, but because the Lord is with you. May you be strong and courageous, finding your strength not in the lifting up of your own heart, but in the doing of His will, for He is your hiding place.
